It's a tech test. They specifically said you shouldn't focus on getting in because most likely you're not, and besides they're going to be getting asked to do some weird stuff. Also some EU players did get in test latency.

Perhaps people are PM'ing him letting him know they've recieved the invite...? Or maybe he's just stirring the pot trying to generate more hype.

Either way, I'm almost positive everyone knows they're going to have to install the client for quite some time. The reason most people want in now is simply because they're only letting a very select few in... That means for the rest of us who don't get in, we have to wait upwards of weeks maybe to even get our e-mail.

SOE screws over their EU players A LOT. If not getting into a very early technical test has your feathers ruffled then you're in a for a world of disappointment.

This tech test has very few players for a reason. They are attempting to scratch the surface and see how the game plays outside of their walls. This means they basically want to see that the game can stand up on its own even without high stress levels.

I wouldn't get too down on them for not inviting EU... Their servers are based in the U.S... Not too hard to see their logic behind choosing the small few for what is essentially a overhyped internal test.

Just because you played PlanetSide nine years ago (and I was around back then too) doesn't mean they owe you anything. I don't think vets deserve to get in earlier or anything. Just getting a free priority key is a nice gesture. I didn't pay all that money to get into the PS2 beta. I paid it so that I could play and enjoy PS1, which I did. For me, I got my money's worth already, the PS2 beta is just an extra bonus.

I think you need to step back and take a breather. No one is entitled to anything. Its up to the company to decide what is best for this technical test. Beta still hasn't started yet anyway, it does after this test is over in the next week or two.

The tech test is about your hardware survey, it's not closed beta. It's for drivers and computer configurations that need to be ironed out.

With that said, beta testing isn't about someone's need to play early and have a party. It's about squashing bugs and stressing servers. No one is entitled to anything, IMO, but priority access is a nice gesture by the devs, and they've been stressing that the tech test is a short non-beta for ages, and most seemed okay with that.

And straight up, anyone that thinks buying a magazine that came with a free beta key for funsies is equivalent to paying retail to access to a game is naive, gullible, and kind of a tool - not to mention stupid for trying to BUY access to an incomplete FREE game.

Come in kids, there's more to the world than planetside, find something to do for a week or two and get excited about it like everyone else instead of crying about not being the first one into a tiny pre-beta for testing 4 year old gpu optimization.

I don't think you understand how much some of us would love to get a chance to do that much :p

And I have no delusions about beta. I intend to test whatever they tell me to test. But I'm excited as hell to see any footage at all from Planetside 2, so just being in game in some capacity, no matter how limited or full of beta bugs, would be fantastic.

Edit: Also, yes, vets really have no right to complain. The fact that they intend to get all vets in earlier than some non vet testers will be able to get in is pretty awesome, but it's not something we should feel entitled to. Let them do what they need to do to make the damn game.

This unfortunately is a little inaccurate and based on the assumptions that none of those folks got in. As I've been saying for some time not everyone can get in at once. It just isnt possible. This will be moot soon enough I assure you.

And I have no delusions about beta. I intend to test whatever they tell me to test. But I'm excited as hell to see any footage at all from Planetside 2, so just being in game in some capacity, no matter how limited or full of beta bugs, would be fantastic.

Edit: Also, yes, vets really have no right to complain. The fact that they intend to get all vets in earlier than some non vet testers will be able to get in is pretty awesome, but it's not something we should feel entitled to. Let them do what they need to do to make the damn game.

Not really. Tech test is meant to last a couple weeks (possibly shorter), so I suspect they will invite everyone they intend to be part of the tech test within the first 7 days or so. It only makes sense to let in the high spec people first, since those are the ones they are most certain will run the game well, They can then test to make sure there are no weird bugs based on conflicts between various high end hardware combinations.

But after letting in those first high spec people, they would let in other people with progressively lower specs. The entire pool is probably already selected, with an even distribution of high and low end systems, but it could be that they just deliberately let in the lowest end systems in last so that they already are dealing with any issues that are unrelated to low end systems prior to letting the last tech testers in.

Whether the tech test lasts two weeks as planned, or only 10 days, or even something crazy like 4 weeks would depend entirely on how difficult it is for them to deal with those problems, but I think that ramping the tech test numbers up over time will make even more sense if it also ramps up which players will be the most likely to have trouble running the game.

But it could be that they are just randomly picking from their pool of tech testers at the moment. Either way, I'll just be pathetically checking my email a couple times an hour... :cry:

It may be an indication of how few players are currently in the tech test. They haven't even invited all tech testers in yet, and the total pool is supposed to be relatively small.

2. Then the whole twitter (and FB) key giveaway fiasco happened with people spamming #planetside2 for days trying to get keys.. as someone who tried and gave up (even made fan art lol) it was annoying to say the least.

3. Then Higby said on AGN that he would get a haircut when beta started.

4. Then we were told by I think Smedly on twitter soon after E3 that it would be within a month.

5. Then there where a few more SOON™s metioned by various devs.

6. Then we were told the "short" tech test had begun and the beta would follow soon after.

7. Weeks later Higby announced he was getting a haircut on thursday sending people into a omgfrenzy.

8. Thursday came and went with no beta rollout and a pre-mature haircut.

9. The community event happened and a video was posted on youtube where some guy said there were 100,000 PS1 vets most of which will not understand why they won't get into beta straight away, basically admitting that they will have to deal with the beta overhype.

10. Now we are back to waiting "1-2 weeks" for a tech test where only a relatively small number of US only testers with shitty computers are playing what sounds like a terribly bugged early beta version of the game.

Could be a play by play of the SWTOR EU beta fiasco, which ended up never happening till they just let everyone in who registered for the beta. I'm not complaining though, its understandable with a game that's in development that delays can and will happen. I think the best policy would have been to not announce any date or time frames at all.

Sums up the forums the past few weeks, really.
At one end you have really frustrated fans who are upset about being told false information since E3, and at the other end you have fans who will continue to not be bothered by the consistent lies by SOE's PR.
I have to admit I was foolish to believe Higby and the other developers that beta would be a few weeks from June 7th, and the "soon's" that pop up here and there. Because of this disaster SOE has put upon themselves, fans have every right to be upset for being left in the dark, being told wrong information or contradictory statements, and ambiguity in their tweets and posts on PSU.

Then of course, none of this complaining really matters. It will not speed up the beta process, but the SOE team should really learn from this fiasco.
From now on, I won't believe anything until I see a beta invite in my email.

I'm surprised to why Eu and other non NA players are not in the tech test. It'll probably help with the ping testing and I believe that some of the lower end computers are non NA players.

A lot of you are missing the point (if not, you're not doing a good job of conveying that). Many people are frustrated because the devs have been telling us beta will be soon. For probably half a year or so, their statements have simply been wrong. To add to that, no one is certain how long this tech test will last. They have said 1-2 weeks, but they also said the beta would be within 1-2 weeks during E3. I simply cannot really trust their statements any longer. I, as well as other users, have the right to be upset because we are being mislead and, quite literally, lied to.

However, if you did not get into the tech test for whatever reason and are upset about that, you should certainly get over it.

9. The community event happened and a video was posted on youtube where some guy said there were 100,000 PS1 vets most of which will not understand why they won't get into beta straight away, basically admitting that they will have to deal with the beta overhype.

10. Now we are back to waiting "1-2 weeks" for a tech test where only a relatively small number of US only testers with shitty computers are playing what sounds like a terribly bugged early beta version of the game.

^that is only what I can recollect atm.. I think it is fair to say that it could have been handled better and its actually quite easy to see why people are "uber complaining".

We can look at this in two ways. First, yes it is frustrating that there is this inconsistency, yes it is frustrating for a soon date to keep arising, and then once it arises, be told that the real beta will once again begin soon. This isn't a wrong way to interpret the information, but it's also a rather self serving point of view.

Looking at it a second way: All the above is still true, and it is still frustrating, but guess what? creating a high expense, large team, innovative game is probably quite frustrating process rife with setbacks. I would wager this is why many companies do not put forth the level of transparency that SOE has been so kind to give.

When you have a significant group of the development team, not even PR, but coders, designers, etc, interacting on an almost daily basis with the community inconsistencies in what is said will occur.

I think we vets have already enjoyed a very privileged experience. Likely, the reason the development has been so open is because this community of PS1 players existed in the first place, and they felt the need to share their progress. Unfortunately, the more they share and try to tell us about future developments, the more some people will display disappointment and anger when that information pipeline slows down, or things get moved around.

So lets just be happy that the game we have all chose to become extremely hyped and hopeful for is also one that has bred an incredibly outreaching development team. I would call that, and the eventual beta access privilege enough.

It does seem they promised beta hard and fast while they had an audience. Of course, when they told the cameras Beta in a few weeks, open Beta a few a weeks after, and release only a few weeks AFTER that, i realized SOE has a loose definition of few weeks. To be fair, they never did explicitly promise 1-2 weeks, but it was still a little irritating to not really know a real time line.

I'm willing to deal with it, as I've never been excited enough about a game to sign up for Beta before. So far, it sounds like this is par for the course on Beta drama.

Come on man! These guys have given us 10x more data and interaction then any other dev team I know of. With all of this great interaction almost every other question they got was "When is beta!!!!". They put up with that and never gave us a date because of people like you.

I am so happy these guys are taking the time to make this game epic and use it's full potential! Have some patience and it is going to rewarded with the best game ever made!

Way to be over-dramatic. They have never given a hard date for beta simply because there are unforeseen things that can happen like bugs or server problems. I'm pretty sure they said "Within the next few weeks after E3" and it's been about 5 weeks so I wouldn't really call it that much of a stretch.

Okay, the PS2 devs get pestered daily,probably hourly with "when is beta going to start". They put up some dates they think it is going to happen and are not able to reach the targets due to bugs or other issues.

When I read things like the above I cant help but assume they have never worked in IT. I have been up until 2 in the morning, working on a build that was due to be released 4 hours later but cant due to a show stopper. I promise you that the system I work on is far more important than PS2, at least financially.

You make a target but sometimes it cannot be hit due to a variety of factors. Luckily the PS2 devs get the opportunity to push dates back then they come up against issues, it causes tears in forums such as this but ultimately it is better for the game.

In other words, suck it up.

This unfortunately is a little inaccurate and based on the assumptions that none of those folks got in. As I've been saying for some time not everyone can get in at once. It just isnt possible. This will be moot soon enough I assure you.

RadarX, I'm sure I speak for the vast majority of the community when I say a big and sincere thank you to you and the rest of the team who have kept us, the community, at the forefront throughout the whole exciting development process. It's been astounding, and if other developers take a leaf out of your books then the whole industry will be better for it.

Some EU players are in the tech test right now, more will be admitted during closed beta. If you were a PS vet or have a beta key you will be part of beta at some point. I hope this clears things up a little.

Someone said if you worked in IT you would understand why they don't give out release dates. It's so true too. Why do you think SOE was so hesitant to say anything about when they would have it ready.... Cause they can't determine exactly when (just a rough estimate) they are going to release... Even during the different stages/phases of beta testing they don't know for sure when the next phases will start. Hence the generic word "SOON" has been used. And I think they are using their words properly here.... It's summer people, go out and enjoy the summer sun!

Use that email and make notifications on your desktop/laptop/phone or whatever you have, so you don't have to constantly check your email. That is what I did anyway to save myself time and not obsessing over this as much.

I did this on my Outlook client but I'm not 100% sure which email address the beta invite will be coming from. I currently have my Outlook rule setup to play a neat/unique sound when I get an email from The PlanetSide 2 Team <[email protected]>...

Well thats what I'm wondering currently. I know Nvidia is updating their drivers for PS2 already, not sure about AMD. I heard on the AGN stream last night I think that there was a test system with 7900s (not sure if it was crossfired). Shows SOE is at least testing AMD cards. Just not sure if there is any optimization yet on AMD's end yet is all.

Still missing the point and even making assumptions :rolleyes: Probably did not read my first post either. Then again, you guys would probably still misinterpret it. My complaint is not about the tech test.

The devs were better off not even saying or hinting at any sort of time period (which they have, read: "soon", "a few weeks" [no longer than a month, by the way. That's what a few weeks is], etc). If they cannot go by what they said, then they really should not be saying anything. I understand that there are setbacks in development and whatnot and that is exactly why they should not hint at any sort of time that beta would be starting, no matter how arbitrary or vague.

If a politician says he will, for example, put an end to a war (ahem), and does not do it, people will be upset. If someone says they will call you, but they never do it, you will be upset. Essentially, if you expect something to happen and yet it does not, you will most likely be disappointed. If you agree with this, then surely you will agree with the following: If SOE says beta will be soon, but they never do it, you will most likely be upset. This has nothing to do with being self-entitled. Self-entitlement means you think you deserve something more than you actually do. If you're not convinced, read my example again. Someone tells you something and creates an expectation but does not fulfill it. You will be disappointed.

Also the problem with them saying soon, is that they keep saying it. 6 months ago, it was soon. 4 months ago, it was soon. 2 months ago, it was soon. It is still soon. So how long is this trend going to continue?

I don't care about getting into the tech test. I understand its purpose. I am not complaining about the tech test or about getting into it, so do not try to attempt to use that as an argument against me.

The devs will continue to give us arbitrary dates and will probably not keep up with them, just looking back at the past. Solution: don't give us these dates because they will create expectations. If these expectations are not fulfilled, people will be upset, frustrated, etc. I also never said they should not give us any sort of information about the game. The community interaction these devs give is quite exceptional. I appreciate the work these guys do. If I did not, I would not even be following this game. However, they are essentially misleading people about beta start times and creating a false sense of expectations.

This is why some people, like myself, are frustrated (this probably deserves a different topic anyway). Some people are frustrated because they are not in the tech test. These people are a different case.

Anyhow, I'm sure I'll still receive a negative response. Try not to let fanboyism cloud your judgement and reasoning.

Exactly. We're glad that they even told us about the Technical Test. They could have just as easily slipped people some e-mails, put a mention of the NDA on the e-mail notifying them that they can't say that they have received it, and went on as planned. ArenaNet did something very similar with their Guild Wars 2 tech. test and their first beta event.
