In typical FPS games, people tend to gravitate towards certain maps. They tend to take to those and learn every little intricate detail about them. Giving how big Planetside 2 will be the typical player wont be able to learn the entire map that way. The question I am asking is this: What type of terrain do you find yourself playing the most on. Will you be wanting to play in the desert terrain or the forests? Will you be wanting to play mostly indoors? Give your thoughts on the terrain and areas of the map you want to play on.

I usually prefer densely-packed jungle environments, but it really depends on the layout itself with factors including cliffs, slopes, building location, etc.

I guess I like the desert / rocky terrain like we've seen much of so far.

My favourite world in ps1 was ishundar.

Will need to see my options for me to really decide, a lot does depend on quality of execution.

I usually go for urban environments so I guess I'll be fighting at tech labs and stuff like that whatever it's called.. :groovy:
But I do like what I see at the Hvar place with the lush green, seems nice.

Btw, that continent/place "ishundar" means "ice dogs" in Swedish :D

Whether you learn the detail of maps or not depends on how much you play. I know the detail of many of PS1 maps for instance.

I think it's difficult to describe the best maps. Those where the terrain helps and doesn't hinder the battle, where a flanking option is available and where sufficient cover is available for those who choose to use it.

There should be a proper balance between attack and defence. Defence should have an upper hand but not too much.

With reference to PS1 I liked Esamir because it helped the battle. I dislike Acension for the same reason. The base Yazata is particularly bad.

I live in the desert so I prefer something a bit more green. If I want to see desolation I'll look out the window.

I want some rolling plains for great tank combat. And mountains for infantry warfare.

If they make the biodomes a lush jungle inside, I would love to fight in one of
those. Think the first half of the original Crysis, in a bubble.

I love deserts and lush forest areas for FPS games.

I don't know why but I totally despise snow/ice areas in games, I even hated the ones in super mario bros as a kid. I'd usually find myself logging off Planetside 1 if the only fight going on was on a snow continent :p

Made me a bit sad to hear that they're thinking of making a snow continent for the last of the three for planetside 2.

Jungle and Urban for infantry. (I'm gonna love the Biolabs xD)

Mountain/Valley and deserts for air.

Grasslands, deserts, snow... any area really, as long as it feels really epic rolling around with a column of tanks.

These are the biomes I would like to see in game. Since the maps are only 64 square miles, each map should be a distinct biome. No putting 2 or 3 different ones on such a small map area. Having seasons would yield diversity. Do it real time northern hemisphere.
Would be worth it if seasons where only 30 day periods if you don't want the RL 365 day plan.

That would give you 9 different maps, some with seasons.

I: Equatorial Always moist and lacking temperature seasonality
Evergreen tropical rain forest

II: Tropical Summer rainy season and cooler “winter” dry season
Seasonal forest, scrub, or savanna

III: Subtropical Highly seasonal, arid climate
Desert vegetation with considerable exposed surface

IV: Mediterranean Winter rainy season and summer drought
Sclerophyllous (drought-adapted), frost-sensitive shrublands and woodlands

V: Warm temperate Occasional frost, often with summer rainfall maximum
Temperate evergreen forest, somewhat frost-sensitive

VI: Nemoral Moderate climate with winter freezing
Frost-resistant, deciduous, temperate forest

VII: Continental Arid, with warm or hot summers and cold winters
Grasslands and temperate deserts

VIII: Boreal Cold temperate with cool summers and long winters
Evergreen, frost-hardy, needle-leaved forest (taiga)

IX: Polar Very short, cool summers and long, very cold winters
Low, evergreen vegetation, without trees, growing over permanently frozen soils

I like all kinds of environments for the most part but I like when theres things to hide behind and a lot of objects so you can be sneaky.

It would be too awesome if they could get snow to actually lay on the ground and puddles to form in the floor. It would make jelly in my belly.

Seasons sounds like a great idea. Maybe a "year" in game could be a month so we get a new season each week. Also, a map with varying elevations that then determine the biome would be cool. (See Just Cause 2-at low elevations near the coastline, there was jungles, but there was barren snow covered mountains as well.

Mobiusonegto, in typical FPS games people gravitate towards certain maps because of balance and limitation of choice, not because of the terrain. I don't think people play Dust2 because they like sand. :p

That aside, I'm looking forward to the snow continent the most. I like the look of icy lakes and tundras, snow drifting around everywhere. Having a backdrop that's stark white with red, blue, and purple soldiers running around is going to look slick.

I loved the forest terrain with the mountains traversing the country side and the transition from that, to desert looked really cool. Reminded me of home in Colorado.

The icy continents were my favorite in Planet side. I tend to like the bleak and moody atmosphere of snowy areas. Metal Gear Solid, and The Thing come to mind as great examples of games that nail this environment. The new Lost planet footage also looks very impressive.

I've gotta say. I just love snow maps. They appeal to me for some reason.

I'm okay with the other 2, and I'd play on them if I had to, but I would much, MUCH rather play on a snowy map. I mean, lots of snow. Thick snowfall, with a slight fog and medium crosswind. ( Reaver Pilot here :P ) Low visibility as well.

Wonder what it'd be like to fly in a situation like that....

Am i the only one that wants to play on much more alien landscapes?

This is a sci fi game afterall and with a bit of imagination you can come up with some really creative ideas instead of just fighting in areas that could be on earth.

Snowy Fields (ala Esamir)
Hilly Deserts (ala Desolation Island)
Cliffy Deserts (ala Ishundar)

But most of all I like:
Frozen Urban Terrain with lots of ice and metal.

BF2142 (+ Northern Strike) is the model. My favorite is Fall Of Berlin.

Really love snow and ice. BFBC2 had some really good snowy forests and towns that I really like.

I've been obsessed with the Battle of Hoth from Empire Strikes Back since I was a little kid, so I've always loved snow/ice settings in games, especially ones with trenches. I'm also glad to here that Esamir is set to have some ruins and such. I plan on playing infantry more than anything else, and I think having features like that will add a lot of depth to the infantry gameplay.

That being said Amerish is looking absoloutly gorgeous at the moment, and all of the intel we've seen pertaining to Indar has got my strategic juices flowing. Seeing as all of the continents are shaping up to look fantastic I will probably want to play on all of them as much as possible, but if they throw some trenches onto Esamir, it's going to be hard to get me out of that icebox.

Someone mentioned Hoth earlier and i'd like to refer to Starwars battlefront. Battlefront 1 has probably been the best FPS i've ever played in terms of its maps and variety. For example the Hoth map is perfectly huge and has heaps of open white snow for snipers willing to risk the hikes to good spots but as well as the openess it had tight corridor fights at the bases as well as hard to predict trench fights out the front. Then after the fight at hoth you'd switch to an ruined urban map or maybe the forests of endor or the indoors corridors of jabbas palace. All areas produce different styles and tactics and I reckon that without everything I'd get super bored fast.

I remember that game, I actually like Battlefront 1 over 2, mabey it was because the unballenced heros in which shooty charachters sucked, or mabey it was the porly designed space battles which were lame and lousy, that star destroyer is destroyed from bridge to shields to coms and it is still in play?

One of my favorite memories of Battlefront 1 in the galatic conquest is when you learn how to kill the Jedi heros which were all but immune to blaster fire. Like getting a wookie and use the grenade launcher and I would just juggle darth vader and even able to kill him once or twice in a game.
