View Full Version : Will there be open test servers?

I'm referring to test servers like the "EVE Online" singularity server. The test server would be obviously be used for testing purposes like future beta patches and content but it can also be used for testing your character configurations(skill point set up, ship loadouts, etc).

I haven't played eve online in a while, but I do remember vaguely that there are certain restrictions to prevent players from using the test server as their primary server.

However, the singularity test server was not be only used for it's named purpose but also for staged filming.

So again, any word on this from the devs? I mean it sounds like they would put this out but I'm curious.

OT - Merc, what does the DT at the end of your name stand for???

Ah okay, well I hope we do...it's fun for staging videos.

@Dart - DT is my initials for my last name.

A lot of MMOs have public test servers. So I wouldn't be surprised if PS2 had one, although PS1 never did.

ps1 did have a public test server, the launch shortcut is still on my pc. Last time I probably used it was when they were introducing the deliverer variants.

I'm afraid you can't do that. Delta Triad have copyrighted the letters consecution of "capital D, capital T". We'll need to kindly ask you to change your last name.

I guess it depends who had it first? So here's hoping Merc is <7! Nah, it's nice to know - he thru us for a loop on our boards the other day. We were discussing something on PSU and suddenly someone was like "which one of you is Merc" and we were all confused!

Are you sure on this? I have had converations before on what is and is not copyrightable and was told short strings such as that were not.

I looked up the info on copyright.gov and found this under what is not copyrightable. Of course this is US copyright law and I am not certain on DeltaTriads area of origin.

titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols
or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation,
lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents

Unfortunately your Sarcasm detector is not enabled :(

Back on topic, I'd like to see a test server that joebloggs and janedoe can join, so the Devs get a wide range of views and there isn't a repeat of lasher 2.5 / big fat robots / phantasm's with guns (or, to use a bf3 example - ridiculous suppression)

Ah okay lol. Well I wouldn't really mind changing it anyway tbh, it's just something I throw in when "Merc" is taken or just to avoid that.

I have fond memories of logging into the PS1 test server and having mini events while helping the devs with the upcoming patches.

Unless there are a great many (tens of thousands, even 100,000+) testers in closed beta SOE will want to open it up to assure their servers can handle the load.

Would definitely be cool and interesting. And it does make a lot of sense for a shooter especially.

It's nice to let everyone try new balance fixes and ideas out before forcing them on people. It allows us to see "what if" and help the devs know if they are headed in the right direction.

TF2 had a separate "TF2 Beta" sister program on Steam. You had to download the entire game again but it let Valve test out new weapons and changes without affecting the main game.

Like other people have said, other MMOs have this feature too. Is it needed? Probably not. The beta test will no doubt iron out all the bugs. Is it nice to have? Yes it is.

It would be for future updates not launch. It's like having a "beta" server for future additions and changes. I just think it's a great way to make sure adjustments and additions are sitting well with players before they are forced on us.

That is what I meant.
