View Full Version : PS2 Download.

O.K. So I did a search and found a thread on the PS2 download size but found no definite answer. Just a lot of guesses. For anyone that took part in the techtest. How big is the download ?
This should not violate the NDA by telling us how big the file is but if for some reason this is an NDA breech please disregard and delete this post. Maybe a dev can jump in here and tell us please. Some of us are on a limited usage plan and knowing this will come in handy so we know what to expect for an over usage charge.
Thanks.

I laughed.
But seriously, I'd like access TO the download, even if I can't play right now, yet I know the game is in the fine stage of constantly being updated, so I know that's rather impractical... though the download server might be worth stress testing too... eh? EH!?

All bullshittery aside, this is one of those things like going to a Maserati dealership. If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
On a more helpful note, it's about 9 gigs, I think. A friend of mine got accepted into tech test and made some reference about it's size. Don't hold me to that number, though, I wasn't really listening to him at the time. The gist though was he considered it "big". Make of that what you will.

And that's just one continent.
Most of the space is probably absurdly detailed textures and orgasmically beautiful sound effects.

Actually, I hadn't considered that... It may indeed just be the one continent. I don't know, I don't have access yet. Although, it stands to reason the download would include everything they have at present. I don't think the whole beta is going to be on just the one continent, is it? Or are they not interested in testing the continents themselves?
Yeah, I think models and the associated textures are usually the biggest part of any game part, followed by sounds. In the case of the continent, it would be a very large model, or many smaller ones :P

I just wanted to mention that you may want to change the title of this thread; since everyone is SO hyped and ravenous for Beta, having a title of "PS2 Download" might really mislead some people into thinking that the client can be downloaded, etc. You may want to change the title to "Question about PS2 Download" or something more clear in it's purpose :-)

Far as I know, only Indar is finished. They're working on Amerish, with Esamir to follow. 3 continents are planned for release. I imagine we'll see them all during open beta.
And for the record, while I don't know how SOE is setting up their terrain files, WoW's vanilla continent textures (the entire "landscape" was a single massive texture on top of a height map) were each an entire 4 terabyte texture crunched down to a much more reasonable size.
Again, I don't know how SOE tackles texturing their continents. It would actually be pretty cool if a dev came in and informed us about how big a continent file really is, including JUST the height map and texture overlay, not the buildings and other natural objects on them.

This what I heard through the grape vine:
- Current client is about 9 gigs
- May increase because indar is the only continent on the client
- Also speculation that a lot of low rez textures are being used to keep the client size down

The E3 leak was 11.4gigs. That was with 3 conts (and the other two were not done)

(The following post does not break NDA because I'm not in techtest, all this information was gleaned from the e3 leak)
Models take up the most space, by far. There is alot of 3d art in this game. Really.
The world terrain data is split into chunks, ordered by detail level (3 lod levels). They all had decreasing filesize, so this guess seems accurate. This is the second largest chunk of data. They are not heightmaps. This seemed to be vertex data.
The textures are tile based, and it's a differed renderer. That means a few things.
1) Textures size is smaller than something like wow. This is because you can reuse texture data across the map.
2) there are atleast 6 textures per material. Diffuse, Color, Specular, Normals, and a few other I'm really curious to know the techniques on.
There is alot of texture data, but it's all being reused.

I think it won't get much bigger than 15 GB. All the code is already in, and most models and textures also (all vehicles will stay the same, crates, lights etc can be reused, new metal textures aren't beeded too).
I think at launch about 15 GB, and bigger later on when they add more continents, weapons, etc.

9gb aint much, but with my net it sadly still takes ages. The current standard is pretty much around 12-15gb and I'm sure PS2 might end up bigger once Amerish and Esamir are in too

I can't even stand the speed of 3G when using my phone lol. Guessing you have a legit reason for this self-torture? Lol
Coreldan
2012-07-22, 09:18 AM
My reason for self torture is that for some incredible reason, my city is messed up when it comes to internet connections. A single company has a monopoly there (not a very big city, 40-50k people living there) and they have driven up the prices like that.
I pay 20€/month for that 1mbit connection. That's the cheapest I can have and as a student with little income, I don't wanna pay much more. In the next city around 50km off, for 20€ you get like.. 100mbits for that price.
To have like 50+ mbit, you gotta pay 70-80€/month around here.
Well, it's not as bad if you happen to live in a place with fiber optic.. but that's nonexistant unless you live in a new building :D

My average sustained download speed is 68-80KB/s, some times it will hold steady at 90KB/s.
See, I live 500m from where DSL ends and the cable company refuses to come here, even though they have internet a couple Kms away. So, my options are 28.8 dialup (because Bell has old line cards that can't do 56k!), commercial wireless (802.11g), or HPSA+ wireless (cell phone type). I've had the commercial wifi for the last 7 years, even though some times (for months on end), it has been terrible - I mean worse than dialup terrible).
The least expensive of my options:
HSPA+
Download Rate: 7.2 Mbs peak, 2-4Mbs sustained.
Download Cap: 3GB
Installation Fee: $99.95 on a 2 year term
Monthly Fee: $45
Overage Charge: $25 for an extra 10GB then 1.5¢ for each additional MB (that's $15/GB with no price cap!).
Commercial Wireless
Download Rate: 3 Mbs peak, 512 Kbs sustained.
Download Cap: None, but throttled a lot (http://www.xplornet.com/traffic-management/canopy/).
Installation Fee: I don't remember.
Monthly Fee: $45
Overage Charge: None
For that money on DSL and Cable internet directly in town, you'd get 100Mbs and 75GB usage. Dialup, because it requires a landline phone service (that I haven't had in 5+ years) is actually around $50/m, believe it or not!
That said, the company I have the commercial wifi through recently changed to HSPA+ and are more expensive than everyone else, so I am waiting for them to discontinue my current service...
Internet in Canada is a bloody joke. As a result, lots of us would like to know the client size.

No he didn't mean that. His groundwork is done, but there are still loads of artwork.
Remember too that the number of continents won't stop at 3, 3 is just the number for launch. In addition, for all we know they are creating new vehicles to try out but with no intention of releasing right now just as in the same way in PS1 the phantasm existed for years before it went in game.

You have to remember the game wont be as big because there is no scripted content, no high resolution videos like Max Payne has every 30 seconds and not hours of dialogue because it isn't a single player game. Also the maps aren't hand crafted, they use the same base and building designs copied and pasted sand the same with trees etc etc.
So the game wont be a big file size and that's a good thing so it means more people can play.

Well, as said, it's not Finland, it's my city. I know that Sweden still pwns our internets on a national scale, but you dont really have to go further than the next big city 50km off and you already get the same 100/100 for 30€ :D
I love my city and wouldnt like to move out of there ever, but the internet just pisses me off :D Perhaps when I graduate and get a job it's not a big problem anymore when I have the money to pay more for the internet, but still.
Luckily though, the quality of the lines is good, so it's not that I pay a lot for small bandwidth and crappy quality, quality is good but speed is just too limited :D

You guys have actual LTE 4G over there. Here in Canada the regulatory body decided that HSPA+ was enough of an upgrade to 3G for it to be called "4G" and as a result we may never see LTE (except in major cities, for cell phones and tablets...).
Even still, after looking into a bit more it seems that all the "4G" operators here charge $94 - $100 / month for 15GB and $10 - $35/GB overage, with no price cap. By comparison, DSL/Fiber and Cable Internet costs $49.99/m for 75GB with $2.00/GB overage to a max. $80/month!
I'm not sure how it's even legal for the telcos to rape "rural" customers with their 4G pricing, especially when "rural" really means "the telco is too cheap to extend their service, in my case, 500m"...
*sigh*
It's a very annoying issue that I've had to live with for the last 7 years. Sure, we could move, but that would be stupid, because we like everything about our house/yard/etc...

4G DC supports up-to 50mb/s currently, and LTE up to 100. The amusing thing is, LTE 4g costs 39,90 € a month + the extremely expensive carriable modem device. But its a rather cheap alternative. 21mb/s 3g costs approximately 14 euro's a month, but from what I've tested, the latencies still aren't good enough gaming wise, even though the download speeds are higher.
Still satisfied with my 8/1 mb/s. Mainly thanks to my ISP being so god damn efficient when it comes to handling the net work, I smack 20 pings to good Swedish servers (which I primarily play FPS on).

I live out in the middle of nowhere, so everyone gets their internet through these special wireless broadcast towers (They might use radio waves?
