I'm very excited for PS2, just like everybody else. I'm also one of the many newcomers to the franchise, and I absolutely love hearing about everyone else's war stories and experiences from the original. Since I love data, I thought it'd be a fun idea to throw together a survey asking about experiences from the original, and expectations for the sequel. If interested, I'm more than willing to share the responses I get here as well. Thanks guys!

Edit: As of right now, we have about 850 responses so far. I've created a report that shows the results. The report will by dynamically updated as more people take the survey, so if you haven't taken it yet, please do!

I tried my best to get as many text responses as I could in the report, but I can only do so much. If you're interested, you can download all the text responses in an XLS file. I will be creating a second report based on the text response for a more exact number.

Second Edit: Echrome from /r/planetside took all the text responses I exported in the question "What are you least excited about in PlanetSide2?", categorized the responses and put results in a google doc. Wow, over 300 responses so far, thanks for the input guys! It's really interesting to see the data, and I'm excited to show you guys the responses. I put a lot of text field entries in, as I didn't want preset answers to be too restricting for certain questions (biggest worry, biggest expectation, etc). However, there doesn't seem to be a good way to show all the text entries besides exporting a csv file. I'll definitely still do that, I want everyone to see all the data, but I think I'm going to make a second survey and add answer options to those questions based on the results I've received. Thanks again guys!

Nice to see you guys like the survey. I actually work for the company, Qualtrics, but since I do all their server side IT work, I'm actually not too familiar with our tool. This survey not only is giving me great information, but making me become more acquainted with our software as well.

I'm at about 600 responses so far, and it amazes me how the three empires are almost completely evenly divided. I'm hoping we can get about 1000 responses, and when we do, I'll post the results so far.

I did a lot of text responses, and while it's awesome to read through them (especially the stories from PS1 vets at the end), it's kind of hard to display the results. I think I'm going to export them as CSVs for people (hopefully including SOE) to read, and then based on the most popular responses, create a new survey that has responses people can choose from, to get hard answers.

I hope this survey isn't in violation of the no-poll rule, I'm hoping it provides more information than a single yes/no answer to one question.

Different look and lore = different personality types. The TR gets the team players who would play healers and tankers in WoW, the smurfs get all the angsty teenagers who want big guns, and the Vanoobs get the smart (and smartass) kids who played practical jokes on each other in high school science lab. :D

It's okay, I fit his description of TR. If my guild needs me tank, I tank. Heals, I heal. Though to be honest, I kind of fit the VS description as well, perhaps without the "practical jokes" part though.

We're at 800 responses right now. I'm going to start working on creating a report today, should be done by tonight. All the text responses are going to be in CSV files, so I'll just link directly to those files, unless anyone knows of a good way to upload them and display the responses. Agreed, there are a lot of open questions. I plan to use the answers to those to make a more specific survey next. Working on the report now.

The TR are all about sorting Chaos into Order. This is what Hamma does. :)

EDIT: Hooray for numbers! The results show alot more greenies (non outfit) than I would have thought.

I am not a vet but I was a little surprised to see the max units getting no love. I like the inf and medic myself, but was still a little surprised by the very low numbers. And again cool survey and results, good stuff!

I think pretty much everyone will use a MAX sometimes but it's more of a circumstantial class, not something you're going to necessarily play 24/7.

4. If the above named servers are included, which server will your outfit play.
5. What area will your oufit specialize in.
6. Expected outfit size: 2-50, 51-100, 101-250, 250-500

Write in about your outfit: Outfit name, faction, specializations, expected outfit size
and if the above named servers would be available, which one will your outfit play.

This would help us choose which server to play on and with who we would like to play with or against .

I always roll Chaotic Good in RPGs. I believe in true freedom and justice, not laws and duty. Again in the context of video games.

So it's vets and new guys in equal measure on PSU. Neato.

Also: The TR respondents were attracted by the professional military/teamwork ethos, the Vanu like SCIENCE! and TECH! and PEW PEW PEW!, and the smurfs want FREEDUMZ and JACKHAMMERS with a side of fries. It is to LOL.... but it also confirms what I've insisted on for years. Different personality types really are attracted to different factions. And the corporate cultures of our factions will go on and on.

Thank you for this, OP. Also: Is there any possibility you could put this up as a PDF? I'd like to save it.

I'm surprised that inflitrator numbers are low, possibly due to the new people wanting just regular/heavy infantry like other games. Also surprised the MAX units aren't gettng love, maybe new people haven't seen enough of them. IMO, MAX units look boss and gunna kick some a$$!

Definitely, I'll do that right now and then post a link. The first link I posted will dynamically update as more people take it, we already got 60 more people, and unfortunately the pdf will be static, but we should have enough of a sample now so you have a good idea.

I'm not really concerned about the number of MAX units once people see how effective they can be when used properly. However I have to admit their huge lack of flexibility and mobility makes them look rather dull to me - which isn't surprising coming from someone who plan to strap rockets to his back. The problem is that it seems I'm far from being the only one. Not only is it - by far - the class the least people intend to mainly play, but there's also a third of the people who think it will be their least played class.
Maybe it'll be a class that isn't all that attractive until you give it a try but I guess we'd better keep an eye on this possible issue because it'd be sad to see many players use these exo-suits for the sake of performance even if they get bored doing so.
All vehicle players will put the MAX as their least played class, them being one third is not strange at all. Everyone who wants to drive vehicles decently often will not put MAX as their most used, so them being the least used main class isn't strange either. You can see that the more pigeonholed a class is the less want then as a main etc, and the MAX is the most specialized class. Same as how the infiltrator isn't that popular either.

Can you add a chart of PS1 players and if they switch or stay with their empire in PS2. Like NC: 90% stay, 7 % to TR, 3% to VS?

oooooo, I like that. I can definitely do that. I also can segregate data based on new players and veterans (i.e. what classes they're going to play). I'll definitely work on that today, and I'll just do it as a separate report.

I was very surprised by the ammount of people planning on playing Engineer. I also plan on being an engineer most of the time. The battlefield is gonna be so loaded with mines. The light assualt is gonna come in very handy at leading assaults do to thier aility to just jump over all the mines. :D

From the look of it the infiltrator is a class people tend to love or hate. This isn't a problem since there's a decent proportion of players who want to play infiltrator. On the other hand there's very very few players (3.28% VS ~20-15 for every other class) who want to play the MAX as a main class.
As I said this may be nothing but it's something we should pay attention to imho.
