View Full Version : What do you miss?

As you know, Planetside 2 will be radically new and different. There will be a lot from the first game that won't make it to the second. So what will you miss? This can be anything from old vehicles to styles of combat that are lost to the game. What do you miss?
Personally I'm going to miss the Galaxy Gunship and all of the buggies. Why are there no buggies???
But I'm also going to miss the large open-terrain warfare. It seems like too much of the warfare is being conducted at a base instead of between them because all of the open area is pocketed with little outposts.
I also think that they don't put enough emphasis on taking the actual base. There is always only one or two capture points in the base itself and the rest are spread around. You can capture the base without ever going inside it! Does that make any sense?
That's what I'll miss, but what about you?

Most (all?) of the bases I've looked at in streams have had a majority of points inside* the base. Even if it's a 3/3 split, unless the attackers take all three outter points simultaneously and force a draw (in which case the defenders probably win), the attackers will always have to take at least one of the inner points, if only momentarily, to flip a base.
*The bases don't seem to have well defined boundaries, but there is usually a cluster of points that are much closer to the center of the base than the rest.
Also, why are you going to miss the galaxy gunship? It's still in PlanetSide 2.

It still remains to be seen what it'll be like to spawn at Gals, but for now I'll say the AMS. The moving spawn point and the overall aim of reducing travel time (via AMS and Router) in order to improve battle efficiency is a very Planetside thing for me, and I don't know if it will have a part in the new game.
The Router was an especially interesting aspect of the game. Such a hilariously mysterious thing; you step through the telepad and you just don't know where the hell you'll end up. I've been semi-focusing on it the past month and I've tried to set up some sweet telepads, but it's a hard thing to do. Especially ones that are on top of towers or bases because you have to park your mossie there, decon and pull the router, set up the router, get the telepad, and hotdrop out of the mossie to set it up. It takes a lot of work and 90% of the time one end or the other gets discovered instantly or lost to OS. I really respect the cloakers that set up a telepad in the gen or something (and the multiple attempts it took for them to get to the gen), coordinate a time to teleport, and BOOM, teleport a bunch of people to the gen instantly. A very underappreciated vehicle that can totally break a stalemate.

Well from what I can tell the Liberator is pretty much the new GG.
I think I'll miss closed bases.
On one hand I'm happy we can get rid of the Brick wall you tend to mash your head against in PS1 trying to break in. On the other hand it worked for some proper tactics in less contested areas (prepping and holding a base with an outfit platoon). Although this last is less easy if it's :
- on few and huge continents (easily spot)
- with use pops (easily stomped)
My fear is that you won't be able to really do tactical stuff with your outfit aside from just going in force. One thing I love of PS1 is going in galaxies and dropping at a specific base to prep and fend off or clear a base. From what I can tell it'll be more of a throw our numbers there and see how we can push that place in PS2.
No acces here, so might just be ungrounded.

Thats where you get the big tank fights, not between buildings..

Interesting points.
PS1 had fairly linear paths for assaulting bases, leading to fairly rigid defensive and assault strategies. It enforced team work on the front lines since everyone knew the drill, while commanders tried to think of clever ways to break the stalemate.
PS2 seems to allows much more free form base strategy. This gives much more room for improvisation, giving large bonuses to outfits that can communicate well and strategize on the fly. But, it also promotes chaos in the non-organized, making the zerg more confusing and dangerous than ever.
Stalemates and bottle neck battles. While they are not fun if they go on for hours on end, as a support oriented player I do enjoy a structured front line.
I will miss Combat Engineering.

I also agree that PS2 needs more bottle necks and choke points, they really create a sense of more structured warfare. currently, in beta videos there werent that many players around, but I really haven't been capable of spotting the "front line" anywhere in the videos yet. I just hope this game actually has gameplay that causes front lines to happen. Stalemates? Well, I'm surprised if they do not happen.

Super tight quarter fights (ps1 towers), NTU drain's, BUGGY'S!!!!, Magrider top mounted main cannon, Cloaked AMS, No Radical base changes upon empire change in ps1 the whole base flipped colors, VR for weapons testing (the old one never got an update either kinda made me mad it was vary under used),
One squad defensible basses in ps2 the bases are quite large and you wont be able to cover enough ground by running back and forth to keep the enemy's from taking over. to combat that they should have LESS capture points, one video I think i saw 5 capture points for a single base.

I miss a basement generator defence. Around 50+ guys in a basement, crouching behind crates aiming at 2 entrances just waiting for an enemy onslaught.
I hope they design something similar because I’m yet to see anything that captures that feeling.

An extensive and in depth Combat engineering system. Dropping a man-able turret doesn't look nearly the same as entrenching a base to the teeth.
The lack of base types. There are only 3 base types i believe and with the lack of lattice system it seems like taking specific bases does not affect the meta game.
All of the many vehicle types. I realize that with the new system much of it's re-creatable by switching turrets but i'd like to see some specialized designs.
A more robust inventory system. Though the current inventory is passable i'd like to see a combination of both.
The implant system using duration based implant consumables sort of irks me. But i guess special kit can be purchased as actual gear so i'm not too miffed on this one.
Lack of lightning secondary gun. One of the turrets for it had better act as the old 75mm/12mm combo.
The meta game overall really. Blowing up tubes, dropping gens, infecting bases etc. I realize due to the new capture style some of these aren't necessary but at the moment its shipping pretty light on strategic gameplay. PS1 did the same to some extent and i'm hoping that PS2 adds more strategic gameplay over time.
Overall though I think they are trying to get the game ready for play as fast as possible without shipping it buggy. As they've hinted at repeatedly they have serious plans for more content and meta game. Here's to hoping their 3-5 year plan is as awesome as our own brainstorming can be.
Oh god I hope AzK doesn't find this thread!
Personally, I miss my PS1 IFF system and minimap which showed my squadmates as opposed to obligatory green arrows.

I'm going to miss the stealthed up AMS's but who knows, could stealth a galaxy once it lands.
But yeah you can change your galaxy to a gunship, you have to cert more passenger spaces and having more guns will overwrite those certs (If selected).
Battles will also be out in the open! As much as bases are the main objective just like PS1, majority of the fights and battles will be out in the open when you go to capture a base or moving from one base to another. We have only seen the video's about bases due to them giving us the footage they think we want to see. They also haven't had the numbers yet to be able to give us a mass amount of footage outside the bases because you'll be seeing no one :P.
With 2,000 people you will be having people tons of people egging the opposition for outside battles to take you away from the main bases. Also they will be bringing in many different types of capturing bases and they may even bring back the LLU soo good luck defending that one guy against hundreds of others haha!

Some clarifications:
- Buggies are going to be in the game, just not at launch. Sometime later.
- The lightning, like all (most?) of the other tanks, can cert for a coax machinegun. So the old cannon+machinegun combo is still very real
-MAX units will not have jetpacks, that is reserved for light assault only.
Thats all the confirmed stuff I can alleviate. Personally I might just miss CC holds, but honestly it might still be possible with some of the cap points located inside larger buildings. The Tech plant looks like its central point will be crazy to hold, very fun looking.

Cool on the lightning turret.
But you reminded me. I want bases with different capture mechanics. All we've seen so far is capture the little points and hold over time. We need not just the little capture point system they have now but some with take and hold CC's other with LLU's (maybe). I imagine that perhaps capitol bases could be introduced and be much more entrenched and defend-able along with the old CC, generator and tube systems.

Well you're in luck :D In a recent video Higby said that they were working on different capture mechanics at the moment. King of the hill and capture the flag (LLU?) are the two that I remember specifically. Tubes and gens were mentioned in a recent video, but there were so many in the recent couple of weeks that I have literally no desire to go digging for it.

Thanks man. I was freaking out for a second after i realized i stopped paying attention to capture mechanics and just now noticed we've only seen the multi point cap and hold. King of the hill sounds like the old CC to me or at least could be adapted to it. Everybody pile into the CC and hold that central point with your life.

Yes there were. I can't remember if it was TB's E3 footage or something else but there were gal drops occurring (though, the animation was broken and people were just teleporting from the gal to the ground)

I agree that it won't be the same without those animations, but from a gameplay standpoint, it's probably better if you don't have to wait 5 secs before being able to drive the vehicle.
Likewise, it won't be the same without the vehicle bay animations, but it will be nice knowing that you're safe from the d*****bag with a Skyguard who blows your plane out of the sky before you are even allowed to gain control over it. I am more than okay without that.

I dont know about that, from what they have told us (and they havent told us alot) It seems like OS will be harder to get those huge super kills because the bigger the strike the more resources it will take. It would seem counter productive if you saved all that up to get a huge strike with a huge CD timer only to miss.

Ditto to this. That was something I was kind of bummed out about initially when I saw some of the first PlanetSide 2 videos. I'm kind of hoping that maybe in the far distant future SoE could throw a retro continent in, featuring only classic styled bases. Having a well defined front line was pretty cool, it would create moments where you see waves of troops shooting and slowly pushing and advancing. Ah well.
