The real question for this thread is: Which disappointment do you prefer?
[ ]A. The beta's start is getting pushed back.
[ ]B. The beta has started, but you weren't invited in the first wave.
If B then:
[ ]C. But only if the wave invites are a week(s) apart.

I've not heard Smed talk in absolute dates except for when he was asked if beta would start before August and the answer was YES. And the other one here which is if beta would start on Monday or Tuesday of next week (the last two days of July) and the answer was YES. Even though, the latest Mon/Tue comment wasn't exactly an absolute since the tweet has 'probably' in it. :P

After the closed beta with the keys, they will open it up to everyone before the true release. It will take quite some time to hammer out the kinks.

I'm honestly hoping that once the beta is opened, it stays opened until the game is released. Maybe a week or two at best of downtime during the two.
Thats how I've seen it happen here and there. Might be selfish of me to want it this way, but there :)

I agree and wouldn't think they would close the game for any time between open beta and release. People will be able to use the cash shop and buy things toward the end of open beta I'm sure. There really wouldn't be a reason to turn the game off when games are no longer being sold in stores but rather being downloaded online. It should just roll right into being 'released'.

SOE has said they plan to release PS2 THIS year.
We're just days away from month 8 ;) I imagine the beta will be ongoing, and despite my first post in this thread, I do believe invites will be akin to the tech test invites where they're only 2-3 days apart if that long. For the most part, that plan is probably to stem the cluster-**** of everyone downloading and logging in at once. Release day scenarios almost never go well for MMO's and Planetside likely wouldn't have been an exception.

For those who get in, it will be interesting to see who is actually testing and looking for bugs. It's been my experience in the beta's I've been in (and yes I'm guilty too) that a lot of people just try to get into beta so they can play/judge the game.

You'll always get that crowd Khaaaaan. I can't blame them though, testing can be a very tedious thing when done correctly.
Also, they are going to want to know how certain systems flow, base captures and combined arms fighting feels so we will all have to naturally just play the game as well to give feedback on that level.

Mostly, this is what they're looking for. Officially hired testers find a bulk of the bugs and for the most part, bug hunting doesn't ever stop. It doesn't matter if the game is in early beta or 10 years old, it doesn't stop.
But one thing people need to understand is that not ALL bugs will be squashed, and some will be intentionally left alone simply because they aren't high enough priority and too risky to remove. Removing bugs can cause a bunch of new ones, and they could be much worse than the one that just got fixed.

Yeah well, people in the tests can't really talk here, because they'd be compelled to speak from experience. You know... educated opinions.
What we have here is a far, far cry from educated. Such is the curse of not being selected. As a result, they stick to the exclusive and official test forums where they can speak with other educated people.
However, I'm afraid once the beta invites really kick off and a lot of us get in, this bit I mentioned in another thread will unfortunately have relevance and start to really muck up the atmosphere of the test forums (if it isn't already terrible: )
Good news is all the fears relayed on this board are based purely on speculation and conjecture. The bad news? People will be walking into the tests with these thoughts and ideas already pre-meditated, making them even MORE biased about what should and shouldn't be, instead of taking what actually is at face value and evaluating it from there.

That's picking semantic nits and thinking wishful thoughts. We still don't even know if they intend to charge for the client; according to the official web site, they have yet to release data on their business model. I'm telling you, I've done software development for HP and the state of California and places like that... and you do NOT go from alpha to release that quickly in the real world. We do know that the game will be completely free. They've asserted this over and over.
As for the rest of your post, few games spend six months in public beta and nine months is almost unheard of. Being free to play as it is, it is likely that PlanetSide 2 will follow a similar path to release as Tribes: Ascend, where the beta designation might remain long after the game is freely available. From the end user's perspective, when this point is reached, the game has effectively been released.

This is where it gets tricky. This isn't an MMORPG. It's an MMOFPS. There's nothing really available to compare it to, but generally FPS's have a shorter Beta rate, since there isn't content tiers to worry about.

Sigh. The website isn't up to date at all, they don't even feature the different classes or anything! Suppose they will when open beta starts but now we'll just have to deal with it. The game will be completely free to play, akin to League of Legends, everything that is associated with gameplay will be possible to aquire without spending a single dime. However cosmetic items and boosters will be available for Station Cash, which is bought with real money.
I believe there is no set average for how long the beta usually lasts, it has so much to do with wether the publisher feels the need to release the game immediately or not I think. For example, the Mists of Pandaria beta has been going on forever and it's either going to be awesome or Blizzard is seriously slacking. That or waiting for the right time to release the expansion - might not be the best idea to release it during summer.
So to summarize.. TL;DR
Website is not up to date, watch videos for accurate information on the game and the beta will last for as long as the developers feel it should last, though the game is set for release (probably) this year according to Creative Director Matt Higby so even if it's a holiday release we are probably not looking at the beta lasting for longer than four months.

It varies. Some MMOs have drawn out betas that can last a month, even more. Some have a beta that lasts a week, stops, they release another beta build; rinse and repeat.
As Sephirex said, FPS betas are generally short, if there even is one.

Yeah... but a MMORPG is the only game of comparable *scale.* And look at what laggy clusterhumps most 'raids' are in games like Everquest 2, which involve relatively few combatants. PS2 is attempting to scrape a third or more of the pop of an entire server and potentially have them all within eyeshot of each other, each running around doing their own murderous thing. That's an awfully tall order.
Ah well. We'll all find out in Higby's good time.

The server's are handling the load just fine, but the clients are having difficulty. MMORPG's spend most of their time in Beta due to balancing problems and broken triggers. Optimization isn't the biggest time sink in MMORPG Beta development, but they don't even try for this kind of scale.
There's just really no way to guess.

Rushed game is rush.
My biggest question about PS2 is if they intend to open the cash shop toward the end of their beta (and so not db reset) because at that point, it is pretty much release even though they consider it a beta.
They could of course just give back the SOE credit so you can spend it back but that sound like trouble for very little.

Please don't take BF3 as an example... That game SHOULD have been in beta for alot longer.

I doubt they would reset anything. Come the end of open beta, the game will roll right into being released. People will keep what they have bought and what they have accomplished in the game.

I actually just saw a Q&A with them where they stated the money would be returned if they ended up doing another reset (So yes cash shop would be open). It is possible near middle to late beta they would no longer reset.
Also just want to say with as many guns that each empire has there will be numerous balancing issues. This leads me to believe the beta may be longer then most think. Counter Strike: GO beta has been going on since atleast February.

Betas go quick (if there is a legitimate beta at all) on games that use rehashed formulas. But there isn't really any game that Planetside 2 can copy its balancing models from. Beta will probably go on for quite a while, although an end of 2012 or beginning of 2013 launch doesn't seem entirely out of the question at this point.

Counter-Strike is a freak's highly competitive game. Not every game needs the most careful balancing that game does.

Once the real cash shop opens, you can consider the game launched.

Glad to see the news but bummer that even if I do get in the first wave I'm leaving town soon after for a couple of days.
Great news regardless.

Good point, totally agree with that.
Like others have said, I hope in the full trailer release later today, that the Devs capture and portrays the epic scale of PS2 for all the potential newcomers.

What if I used a time machine to give my current SOE account veteran status, but also wiped out my past self in the process?
I really need answers on this.

@FINALCUT If you subbed in the past year, before they handed out the free time at the beginning of this month, you are considered an 'Active Sub'....

If you have a time machine, why bother going backwards and potentially wiping yourself out? Instead jump ahead a few months and play the finished game.
