Okay, so we may get beta tomorrow, so I figured I'd do an update with some pre-beta numbers! This is all after the CGI trailer, Chinajoy, etc. For those who don't know, this thread tracks Planetside 2's progress in social media.
*Recent as of 8/2/2012*
Planetside 2 - The Numbers:
Twitter Followers: 37,559(+4,429)
Facebook "likes": 81,693(+10,149)
Youtube Subrcribers: 20,434(+3,229)
Death is No Excuse Views (PS2 Channel only!: 3,685,634
Planetside-Universe users:17373(+870)
Looks like we're looking at over 10% increases in most categories! Unbelievable amount of views for the CGI trailer, especially since thats only the official channel number. Well done!
Other Important Numbers:
Planetside 1 twitter followers: 1,686
Dust 514 (Already in beta) followers: 8,028
Guild Wars 2 (In beta) followers: 124,818
It is important to note that while I didnt post the increase math for the other stats(which are meant for comparison), the increases for GW2 and Dust 514 were neglegible - however, being globally huge, GW2 is still very much higher. This was especially true for Dust 514, who only gained a couple hundred follows.
I'm proud of SOE's reliance upon and use of social media - a medium that I think serves F2P very well. It's nice to see these numbers rise to these heights this early in the game. I think its especially noteworthy that the posts have been very personal to fans and not just canned news-tweets.
I must again stress that I don't mean for these numbers to be indicative of success, etc, just trying to get a feel for the hype level of PS2, given that a large player base will be extremely important for PS2's launch!
Any thoughts now that I've updated? Other concerns/ideas?

Awesome idea. I can't wait to see the stats progress over the next few weeks and months.

That's a pretty cool post. Nice to see something a little different. I would like to try out Guild Wars 2, I won't lie. I am a crafting freak when it comes to mmo's.
I am not sure about how well social media can spread the hype. The good thing is that it's practically free. I am a getting a little older in life and follow devs/ps2 and so on on twitter. But for instance I keep shoving PS2 down all my friends and coworkers throats and they are meh on using facebook or twitter. (And we work in IT). I really hope that this game is big and has support for a long time to come. Guess we will have to wait and see.

The problem is explaining the scope and feel of Planetside 2 to anyone I know. I had one guy tell me "it looks like Halo." Okay... so it's Halo... with 2000 other people in one gigantic match. I'm guessing that last bit falls under "too good to be true" and HE was the only one I know that actually cares to, knows how to and recently has built a PC with mid-to-high gaming specs.
Apparently the people I know are only interested in console shooters... like CoD and BF.
I need to find people in the real world I can actually connect with  I swear I'm from a different world.

The game itself didn't have a twitter, but the developer Red5Studios has 7,362 followers. Around Dust 514 levels.

I've had a lot of luck with "Battlefield 3 in space with a persistent world of 1,000's of people." Best I can
do, haha.

Thanks for the update. Would also be awesome to have an update in about a weeks time for obvious reasons ;)
With closed beta + theatrical trailer inbound. The internets will explode.

Honestly, I think the fact that the devs communicate daily with the fans (and give keys :)) probably helped to get a lot of people to check it out and to maintain interest in newcomers. Looking forward to see how big this gets to by open beta/release (which, for a f2p downloadable game, is essentially the same thing).

I know right, I was sitting at work and played some E3 footage and my friends (who all play BF3 every night) were all like oh it's just like Halo..... Once the game releases I will show them the error of their ways! Guide them to a path that will lead them from the darkness unto the truth!

Great post, very informative!
Some of you guy's posts brings up a good question, maybe worthy of a new thread...
What/how is the best way to describe PS2 to someone that has never heard of it?

I think large persistent halo like game works the best in my opinion. The futuristic style, equipment, vehicles and weapons share similarities between the two.

Thanks everyone, I'll definately update this a couple days after the trailer, then probably 2 weeks or so after the beta starts, and from then on, who knows :)
And I still think battlefield in space with some halo thrown into a persistant sandbox is the best way to describe PS2 haha

How many peeps subbed tp PSU ? Anyone know. That would be interesting to see how those numbers will climb and how those numbers will be effected when (if) PS2 ever gets forums of some kind on thier website.

I've been harassing a mate who played 2142 and I told him he could fly in PS2, so that sold it to him.

I think it is a good thing CCP went with Dust being a PS3 exclusive because if they released it on the PC, planetside would kill it immediately.

I've been trying to figure out how to sell this to people who ask me 'what is it?' and words just don't seem to be working to describe what it is. The Battlefield with 1000s of players is a good one, but I'm sensing there could be something more...
though I'm not coming up with anything. lol

Oh dear. You didn't get the BF3 memo :'(
Alot of my community mates mourned FPS after BF: Desert Combat/BF:V and CoD2 / CS1.6/CS:S - so I go with them but in the future with with 1000's of players in a persistent universe....But the aircraft are easy to fly.

The one question that I'd like answered about these numbers is how many people of the 71,000 (using Facebook numbers since I'm assuming most people spread to the other sites through Facebook) actually have computers good enough to run PS2? If someone has to upgrade, they will be less likely do so to play. Not to mention how many people are wanting to run the game on their laptops, judging by some of the 'can I run this' questions I've been seeing for laptops all over for PS2. While I hope PS2 is successful, I'd rather underestimate numbers to be pleasantly surprised.

you have quite a fair point there ; it is not because you can run other f2p games on your rig that you can run ps2

Keep this shit out of this thread please.
Also, I added the PSU users yesterday for those interested :).
It important to note that these numbers are not implicative of a player count, just as a measure of overall interest, which hopefully in turn will translate to players.

Thanks for doing this man, good info for sure!
I'm curious how much impact the full trailer release later today will be.

1/2 million views in a week of the cgi teaser has to be one of the most heartening - baring in mind all the many that don't FB or Tweet.
Although 300,000 of them were probably TR re-watching it until they understood it......*

Sneak peak of trailer is over 500,000.
Trailer is already over 60,000.
As for how to relate the game to people, I normally go with "Multi-team on Halo... but with 2,000 people on the map" (But then, normally the people I talk to also play Halo with me)

The OP is very interesting. It will be cool to see how these #'s change though the different beta phases and leading up to launch.
I had one guy tell me "it looks like Halo." Okay... so it's Halo... .
I get that from a lot of my co-workers as well when having (forcing) them watch the E3 footage. That statement is usually followed by "damn that looks cool!". I can't wait for some better footage to come out that really shows the scale and scope of it all. Thats when people are really going to get interested because the E3 footage just was not able to convey it.

I'm surprised the Dust numbers aren't higher.
It hurt them at E3 I think that a lot of publishers were saying the gameplay itself wasn't that great. No matter how ambitious your idea if it doesn't feel fun to play it's not going to do well.
Can't wait to see how many servers we have at launch!

i just tell them this much
them: so what is it?
me: well its a couple thousand players in teh same place fighting for land
them: so what like 64x64 battles?
me: no, like, a couple thousand.
them: oh..that sounds impossible and chaotic
me: no, that sound like planetside and war.
