Havent seen a whole lot on the subject... and its a pretty big subject tbh.
I was wondering if anyone had any inside information on SOE's advertising strategy... I.E video adds on game sites, banner adds, big magazine companys and perhaps the ultimate, a TV add.
I remember hearing Higby say he "likes" steam. It would be a huge advertising outlet if it were possible legally (try to get this to happen Higby!!).
I have too many friends that had never heard of planetside.. ikr?
The only way Planetside 2 will work as intended is to have the servers packed and the best way to do that is to advertise.

They did interviews with all the major gaming news outlets and banner ads on gaming sites. I'm not worried about that. They've also been really active on these forums, on Reddit, on Facebook, and on Twitter. Can't get much more social advertisement than that really. I'd say really the only way to drastically step up advertising now is to do something big like TV advertisements a la CoD/BF3, Youtube partnerships with more than just TB (like FreddyW, who did a few shorts for BF3), and advertise the HELL out of "Free to Play" on the Playstation 3.
I don't know if TV would be the best route for this game to be honest. I can't say I see many PC exclusives even doing TV adds besides WoW. Like you said getting this on steam is a must imo and just advertising on the big gaming websites like IGN and Gamestop will help. TV is good for consoles due to so many people having consoles you can get to your base quite easily. However the amount of people playing PC plus having the proper PC to play this game is a far lower number. The amount of money you are spending doesn't equate to being nearly as effective verse a console game being on TV.

TV adds and magazine adds would be good as well. Most gamers who surf the blogs and read articles on the subject know of planetside 2. However this game deserves 2 be more popular than COD or BF3.

I've recruited 10 people just using the twitter keys and a little preaching. I think their social networking strategy is paying off this early in the game. Expect to see a lot more official coverage come Open Beta though.

Look around dude, its everywhere. Ive seen some PS2 on Google adverts. And there is E3, ChinaJoy, Gamescon, PCgamer, TotalBiscuits coverage and a bunch of gaming sites covering it. Plus FB and Twitter and the cinematic trailer coming out later today. And what did I miss... I think they've pretty much got it covered.

Same here. Honestly thats what sparked my interest in making the PS2 social media thread that tracks all the social media stats. It worked for me and my friends, and a lot of people underestimate the power of this kind of WoM and social advertising.

I think publicity is going well enough for now.
Optionally put the game on Steam.

Putting the game on Steam before release (or at least open beta) is iffy, and AFAIK, impossible under the regulations (the game needs to have a publicly playable part to appear on Steam). However, when the game releases, it's definitely a good option, as Steam has an immense flow of traffic, and few gamers will refuse to give a f2p game with unique features a spin.

Only if you're part of the gamer-nerd community. We need to send a shout out to the general public.
I'd like to see commercials in the theater the next time I go see some action movie.

You are failing as a friend.
Once the game nears its launch date, expect advertising everywhere.

Yeah if you visit sites of advertisers , you pick up ads to display on other sites (google adsense).

I've always hated steam. Ever since i bought new vegas and was REQUIRED to download it or I couldn't play. I also had to have an active internet connection. Now that's what I call bullshit...

Not seen a game advertise this much in closed-BETA before..
and its still BETA, so lets wait and see closer to release cause the mind-span(?) of most gamers are only a few weeks

Planetside 2 TV ad during the Superbowl! or Olympic Opening Ceremony!
I wish lol.
But I think if Planetside 2 is a good game, they will grow...Just watch League of Legends, I don't think that game had a lot of ads and was never on Steam and is doing very well.
I do hope however that Planetside 2 goes on Steam and they do get some ads up.
Maybe if they become super big, they should put ads on TV like WoW....A lot of people would be interested in fighting in a huge war instead of killing globins and grinding like all these Free MMORPG's commercials I see.

I don't suppose we know what the actual plans are, but the China/Drogba sponsorship on the Chinese side of things points to pretty big things. I think someone said the team was playing Manchester Utd this week - I'm pretty sure one or two people around the world will watch that....

Ive spread the planetside 2 word all around the globe on Xbox community on ps3 community on Battlefield comunity and much more i think just by myself ive bring around 2000 to 3000 people get interested in planetside 2 so yeah i think if everybody do the same and the game is solid we will have a rock solid comunity also i alway have my dust514 vs planetside 2 series that make people talk and comments about both games who share certain aspect like futuristic setting , figthing for ressources and territory , team work , vehicules etc..
Dust514 Vs Planetside2 cinematic trailers - YouTube
this is my brand new ones in the series and it get many consolers like the MAG community to get interested in planetside 2 wich is a similar game with the 3 factions setting and team work level and structures ... more people get in the better it will be for all of us :D

I've been an FPS gamer for a little over a decade and tbh I never played planetside, but it looks really cool. Definitely seems like it needs better marketing because I was playing COD 1 at this time.

Rather than start a new thread, just bumping this old one.
Anyone seen much with days to go? (I use ad-block plus so I never get to see them on the intrawebz).
Only reason I ask is that I wandered past a few bus-stops today with the Cod? Black ops game plastered on them (didn't make me want to buy it one bit mind you :p)
I honestly think PS2 is doing fine, though a TV add would help a little, and with this economy the F2P platform would at least get people to bite a little. I think after the bite, they will want more . Then they will tell a friend and then they will tell a friend, and so on. Soon we will dominate the world and people will be logging and gaming untill the entire planet is consumed. Then and only then we will have complete control over the entire planet Muha muha muha hahahahaha.

They're doing fine marketing wise. Lots of interviews, popular YouTubers on board, massive community support, lot's of hype already. This game is practically selling itself and even more so if they put some serious effort into player cinema tools (http://www.planetside-universe.com/showthread.php?t=50120).

I think there is a lot that has been done, although I must admit I've seen nothing from Pro7, they seem to be just as visible in the UK as they always ahve been, ie not visible at all.
Nevertheless the acid test is the promotion that will be done after launch won't it? I'm certain we'll get lot of people in tomorrow and over the next few days but what about 2 months time?
They could hang some promo's around the launch of the new continents and new inter-continental meta game.

Since it's a FP2 game, I think they might have a more "word of mouth" Strategy supplemented with lower cost Youtube adverts and game specific outlets.
Being a nerd who rarely watches TV commercials anyways, this strategy would be more focused to get my attention.
