Yeah... That was a pretty poor decision on the director's part. I imagined that all 3 factions would be represented equally, not have the NC wreak shit everywhere and then have the VS come in last minute (though it was amazing) all the while you only see glimpses of TR soldiers, and even then it's just of them getting slaughtered.

Well, all three factions were displayed...just not anything resembling equally. Yes, TR was the faction getting shot up in the sky by the light assault NC, and then there was the TR light or infiltrator (not sure which after watching it once) who fought him through the sky, briefly (around 1:40). Although I'm VS, I do wish the TR had gotten more positive screen-time.

All things considered, though it was still a pretty intense trailer; it gave me chills!

Nades down the hatch, the ability to jet pack from galaxy to galaxy and shoot thru the fuselage and then nail the pilot.

If I was an objective viewer, I would have absolutely no idea what the three factions are about. I just saw one guy who seemed to be related to Duke Nukem run through a ton of unidentifiable and apparently unimportant enemy soldiers slaughtering all of them, or nearly all of them...single handedly.

This was obviously a showcase for the NC. Unfortunately the hero gets killed by three mobs at the end who don't even take the time to finish the job.

Certainly a noble effort, but woefully inadequate in describing the game as we know it.

THEN, I considered the following concept. The TR are the most naturally appealing to new-comers. While I totally respect, and feel that the TR should have some positives to pull out from the trailer, I feel that it will actually balance out the population pull. People will always want to play the empire that shoots the most bullets and is the 'right' or original faction... the one fighting off the crazy techies and the rebels.

In that light, i pity the TR, but feel like it might actually provide some balance to empire population decisions.

In all, this trailer was JUST intended to build interest in the game. It will do that.

If I knew nothing about the game I would have no idea what was going on here at all. I would not know anything about any of the factions (especially the TR, I would think that the VS were actual aliens and I would somehow think that the NC were heroes:eek:.

This is more fitting as an opening cinematic before the main menu pops. The "teaser" was fit for a TV ad spot.

I liked it. I'm kind of meh about the TR being essentially cannon fodder and possibly viewed as the bad guys.

However, if I were someone seeing this as my first taste of Planetside, that was a pretty freaking cool cinematic. Technically, you probably could pull off some of what we saw, but definitely not all of it. I doubt we can shoot through a galaxy's roof and kill everyone inside for example... or remove a wall from a base. Kill the pilot in the cock-pit? Maybe.

However, even if you're someone that hasn't heard about Planetside, once you get in and recognize the armors, the effect could still be there that the blue dudes were big damn heroes, the red dudes just get shot up, and the purple dudes are all creepy mysterious and all of their women are sporting killer bods. I don't think it will be that prevalent though, just with some of the... less thinking oriented crowd (the NC can have them, TR want team players and thinkers.)

I feel like I just watched a trailer for a single-player game where you're Jack Daring, the brave NC soldier who must battle through hordes of generic Terran Republic stormtroopers before finally confronting the Purple Menace at the end and saving humanity.

So yeah, way to make a trailer about three competing sides where the only one who does anything cool is an NC guy. As much as Warhammer Online is a shit game, at least they knew enough to make a trailer where it isn't just one side being a badass and everyone else are chumps:

Also, I find it interesting how people's views of the trailer are influenced SOOO much by their empire loyalties. I think it goes to show how deep those loyalties run.

The trailer was fast paced, exciting, and beautiful. Of course it doesn't go into detail about what kind of game it is, but no cinematic trailer does that. It's a cinematic. It's an attention grabber, and it's going to be groping all kinds of attention.

In my experience, most trailers, especially the first official one, is not going to show gameplay, but rather a kickass cinematic. Thats pretty standard. I would write off people that are complaining as new to games in general...or simple in the head.

Wasnt that misrepresentative. TR left a small sacrificial defence force at that base, suckered the NC and VS in to start fighting for it. Out of shot, TR are hacking everywhere else on the map obviously, like they do on PS1 :D VS were obviously foothold-locked to get a force that big to deploy from one location ;D ;D ;D

There are lots of subtle things that people won't get unless they know a bit about the game but you had a whole squad waiting for their squad leader to get in place for squad spawn but I thought that was VERY cool. In WN and now the Sentinels this is the type of thing we do and I know other organised players do. You get call outs like "ETA to drop 40s"..."Drop, drop, drop"...etc etc etc. Very organised and very by the numbers :)

I liked the part where the NC tears apart EVERYTHING, but this trailer is soooooo overexadurated. You can't do most of the stuff they showed in the trailer, it looks more like a commercial for Halo. I'm NC, but I felt really bad for the TR, they got hardly any footage, and when they were in the footage, they were getting murdered. This trailer is everything Planetside is NOT.

It's a stylistic choice made by the studio to depict the game as fast paced and action packed. Do you blame them for making something more appealing to the eye? If they really wanted to depict Planetside they would make a 45 minute movie where 60 people sit around in a base, load up a couple Galaxies, fly for 10 minutes, and then jump out from a half mile in the air and all land on top of a single door.

There is a different between what makes a good game and what makes a good movie.

I agree. I'm NC and I DO think they spent too much time on the one guy just killing. I would have liked to see some TR respawns, that way the whole "Death is No Excuse" thing would actually be appropriate.

Although, I would submit that the trailer depicted the empires quite well: NC is incredibly skilled at warfare, TR aren't particularly good for anything but killing and happen to ave a metric ton of people and VS are filthy and lazy and don't work for stuff they get.

OK OK, SETTLE DOWN. Yes, I would have liked to see more fair representation of all empires and more of a team-based aspect with different classes.

Dude relax. When has a game trailer ever stayed 100% true to its in-game content? The trailer got the gist of the game correct, enough for the uninformed masses, and that's the point of the trailer. It showed 3 factions, several classes, vehicles, massive scale combat, etc etc etc, which is much more in line with "Planetside" than using an SMG to destroy a galaxy is not "Planetside." Plus devs already stated you can shoot out the pilot of airplanes, though didn't specify which weapons.

No shit they made it for the masses. It's a Free to Play game, they HAVE to attract a wide audience in order to make it profitable. Guild Wars 2 trailer have always stayed true to the game play.
You could have made a trailer appealing while making it more true to an actual game.

If anybody thinks that's what the in-game footage looks like, they are a fool. It even clearly states "NOT ACTUAL GAMEPLAY" The whole purpose of the trailer is to just be fun, and to show that SOE has a big budget for the game (It probably cost them over a million dollars to have made.).

Exactly. Almost every single game makes a fancy cinematic trailer, and afterwards, a game play trailer is shown. That's how that duo works. The cinematic trailers usually only apply lore-wise, but everything else just developer's imagination, or someone else's.

I did enjoy the trailer, although it kinda promised me I could kill people from the drivers seat, I guess there's no mention of that.

I agree. I think they could have done it better by properly representing the game, though. For instance, instead of having the whole trailer focused on an NC light assault show what his squad is doing as well. Currently, the only playstyle shown is that of the run/fly'n'gun LA. show some infiltrators. show some snipers covering him. Hell, show a MAX or two (arguably the coolest of all the classes). They could have done it like the opening cinematic for Warhammer online; a better spread of some of the different classes and playstyles in the game. Something to show it's team-based, not a faux single-player game.

That way when the people who come for the game get what they think they were getting, they keep playing: Instead of all the folks who realize they cant shoot a pilot out of his cockpit, or even get onto a galaxy for that matter, and quit. I think they're trying to draw in one one type of person and not all that they could be.
