View Full Version : Helmet view?

Ive been thinking about this and decided to make a topic.

Wouldnt it be cool to have the option of a UI that looks like the inside of a helmet?

Something like in Republic commando?

Or the new halo game?

In the CGI we see the view of the vanu infiltrator:

Maybe we can get it after release? Or custom UIs? What do you think?

+1 I would pay for it :)

It would be cool as an OPTION. But it would really only be used by people making videos and some RPers. Especially in a fast paced AAA shooter, you need the most FOV that you can get.

I already know that if its allowed, I will be turning off all the sparkly special effects and stuff so I can kill NC and TR more effectively and not be distracted by crazy particle effects.

I think its very cool and immersive, but from a development standpoint the variety of different helmets and UI styles (each empire -- MAX as opposed to Infantry, different visor styles like the Vanu Infiltrator) the problem is that you would either spend HUGE amounts of time to make each one, or you would end up with a single helmet style, which would be pretty much the same as what we have now.

So I think that's pretty much the reason for that. They could of made the helmets more standardized to accomodate this, but realistically in development they probably didnt have the armors fleshed out by the time they wanted to have their UI functioning, so there was just not enough overlap to make it a high priority.

Keep that crap for single player games.

If it was optional, and disabled by default. Then yes. Its an FPS game, and I want my FPS games with minimal UI's as possible, I only need the most relevant information on the screen, absolutely nothing else.

I like that 'crap'.

But as damijin already said, it would probably eat too much dev time to get it right.

Eww. No. Add it and immersion fetishists would complain about being disadvantaged when getting their immersion fix, so then it would be locked on for everyone. This already happened with cockpits.

So no. Absolutely not.

Yeah no thanks.. It looked cool in the video when he wiped his visor but this would be bad for gameplay.

I think we need something like this. It brings a cool atmosphere :)

I'd rather have good gameplay, than cool atmosphere to be honest.

Last time I checked PS2 is not uber fast leet paced shooter.

If its an option. There is no problem. And I dont believe there are people retarded enough to use it and complain that it takes up fov.

If the UI was transparent it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Its not like there isn't already an existing UI which could easily be integrated a more uniform helmet shaped design.

Not a big deal either way though.

I agree as long as it's an option there is no problem. If it becomes standard then there is an issue; as many including myself would not utilize the feature.

I'd pay for something like this, provided it would stay transparent. I just wonder how much dev time something like this would actually take for all the different classes though.

I don't really care to have a lot of stuff clutter my FOV. So while yeah it would add to the immersion, I personally just don't care to see it. I would rather keep the centralize UI we have been seeing from the videos that Higby streams. Much nicer imo.

Absolutely. I couldn't have written it better.

on one side; FUCK YES TAKE MY MONEY [throws wallet at screen].
on the other; ummm to much obscuring of vision, I like to kill more ppl then I die in an FPS, I can't see that happening with a HUD like that... :(

For the record, I'd be turning it off.

If a game can't have it turned off, I'd actually be genuinly pissed, especially if its as big as the one in the first picture.

Heck, right now I think this game needs a "small weapon" option, they're too big. I want less things in the way, not more.

Yeah it can be an option, just like the fancy cock pit view shit should be an option.

Optional - yes, would love that.

I would enjoy that. I really liked the Star wars game screen. Obviously optional no doubt. But for a future expansion, I would approve.

This would just get annoying and is a waste of screen space (just like console style jumbo weapons). The UI and Hud should be minimal.

I would just like to point out there are other ways to do helmet view, look at Crysis, particularly Crysis 2. It was a perfectly clear view except for the UI elements but you could tell that it was a HUD projected onto your visor.

T-Ray did say, in an interview with FPSgeneral i believe, that FOV will be limited. Most likely to 60-75 or there about. So i could see it being an issue if it were like say the HUD in Metroid, Republic Commando, etc where it is more solid.

But if it were like transparent lines just to give the illusion that you are behind a visor. Id like that. I dont want something to obscure my view too much if its optional, but its a nice added touch to also give the HUD a faction specific feel along with everything else.

I've always wished people would do this more, at least in cases where an individual is actually wearing a helmet. Part of it is people love to complain about anything that gives them an excuse for failure besides their own suckiness. Part of it is just the extra work entailed, not that it's a lot, but it's kind of a thing that caters to niche groups of people.

In the case of this, something like any of those UI/helmet things displayed would be acceptable. They add to the immersion a little, but don't clutter the screen up excessively. I would like to see it someday. I'd even pay for it.

Personally, I don't even think such things should be "turn offable", if they decide to include them. Yeah, yeah, that pisses everybody off, just like guns that recoil, or any of the other little peeves everybody likes to bitch about in the name of "balance". I consider one of those "it just is things". If something is over your face, your vision should be obscured. Simple. If you're in a vehicle, unless it's somehow transparent, your vision should be obscured.

I don't know if there are plans for UI mod support (i know it can be customized), but if so, players could create their own helmet views.

that would be awesome!!!

I've always loved helmet views in games like Metroid: Prime and Republic Commando, so having as an option in PS2 would be great, imo. Not for everyone obviously, but still some nice immersion.

I'd buy it if it was an optional thing, but I don't think I'd use it all the time. Also, what about all the armor that doesn't have a face-shield helmet? :)
