I am looking to build a new system for PS2, but am in a little bit of a pickle. I was about to put all my parts together for 980 dollars.
7950, 2600k, 8gb RAM, 750W PSU
I am wondering if I should just go ahead and pull the trigger for the beta, or should I wait? From some of the quotes, the devs said that the beta will run until release, so should I just get the damn pc now and enjoy the beta? Or is there going to be a few months break before they actually release the full game?
What are you running currently Eaglez? There is no new CPUs coming out worth looking at for about 9 months and no next gen GPUs for 6 months at the earliest. The 660 Ti is coming out mid August, which is at the same pricing bracket as the 7950. No idea, which will be the better performer right now.
If you want to do a whole new rig please answer the questions here http://www.planetside-universe.com/showthread.php?t=37183 .

Are those bits you listed your current machine or the one you want to buy?
If it's what you want to buy, I wouldn't get the 2600k and go for a 2400k or 3550k instead.
Probably also wait to see how the 660Ti performs. It's shaping up to be exactly a 670 but with a smaller memory bus. There's all sorts of AMD-pants-wetting possibility if that's true.
I'm still curious of the final performance of the 660 Ti vs 7950. May win out of the box, but once fully overclocked I'm thinking the 7950 will pull ahead.

I don't need help with the actual aspects of the new rig, it's just I don't know if I should wait since I am playing on a G72gx
Nvidia GTX 260M
6 GB RAM
2.5 Dual Core Processor Intel
The thing that is nagging at me now is that the MSI TwinFroZr 7950 is 309.99 after rebate. Plus, it has 3GB VRAM and can overclock like a champ. Is the beta set to last all the way up until release?
Your machine may struggle just based on the comment made by Smed with the C2D and 8800 GT having issues with the game. Your laptop actually lines up exactly with that. The 8800 GT the same as your GTX 260M.
What access to do you have to the beta priority (subbed vet, vet, Magazine/Twitter/E3/FB, no key at all)? If you want to try the game out first to see how it is I don't think it will be a problem. Depending on whether or not the FPS is up to what you are looking for its enough to get those parts to you in no time.
I have that 7950 and its quite good. However I wouldn't worry about the price going up. If anything it will only drop.
As far as I know it goes Tech Test -> Closed Beta -> Open Beta -> Release. I would assume yes.

I'm sure my laptop will struggle, that's why I want to build a new rig right away so I can experience the game as it is supposed to be experience :P
I am wondering myself if I should just try to stick it out until the 660ti gets released. The only pressing issue now is if I should just pull the trigger on the MSI 7950 now since it is at 309.99. I just don't want to build my new rig and check prices a week later to see a 30 dollar difference. I guess it's kind of a lottery. Maybe the new Nvidia card will drop the 7970 into my target range.
I decided to go with a 2500k processor, since it is only 170 bucks at microcener o.0
I was able to pull a beta key from Twitter, so I'm ready to rock and roll in that regard.
Hmm ok. You probably will be waiting a few weeks anyway then. Don't worry about the 7950. The price isn't going up like I said before, these are the new prices you are seeing. You could potentially snag a hot deal on a 7970 or even 670 possibly in that time frame.
Good choice on the 2500K also.

You think it's going to be a few weeks for the twitter keys? I was under the impression that hose were going to start right away too. Hopefully.
Nope they aren't. Its the last wave after vets and the wave before those w/o any keys.

Damn, so all that work on fan artwork. Lame. I am probably going to just buy a 670 FTW edition. The only thing holding me back is that it only has 2 GB Vram. I would much rather have the 3 GB Vram in a 7950 or 70. The choice is difficult....
At 1080P you won't be hitting the 2GB barrier, so don't worry about that on any game really.

With beta potentially starting so soon (next week) you might want to just wait and at least see how well your current rig runs PS2.
I was in the same boat as you, and then I figured if I was planning on building a new machine for PS2 anyway, why bother waiting any longer? That's when I pulled the trigger.
