View Full Version : Is Planetside 2 too big? Please tell me no.

So here where I'm coming from....

All this time I've been holding this image of a game supporting 2000 people in map. Sounds awesome but then it hit me. There are going to be three different continents come launch each holding 2000 potential players to fight over 64 sq kilometers. That's 6000 people and 192 sq kms.

In theory this sounds amazing. If the population of China showed up I'd be in heaven but what if they don't? Do you think its likely that not enough people will show up to create an army that wont be spread too ridiculously thin over all three maps?

Please tell me why this wont be so?:(

I think it'll be fine. A full server with 3 continents represents 0.00002 percent of the US population. :)

Eve Online has 8000 star systems and you still run into people pretty often. Least of all Jita. Additionally, unlike Eve, PS2 will have a front line. You're encouraged to go where the action is.

Frankly, I sometimes wonder of the continents aren't big enough when I see the vids where they're flying around. Maybe I'm just used to the wide open spaces in ps1. Particularly the Akkan, Baal, Dagon, Hanish fight that would often evolve into a three way stalemate late at night.

Maybe it's just that there always seems to be another capture point over every hill rather than the vast tracks of empty land between bases.

PlanetSide has larger maps with a lower population cap and this was never a problem (until the game had been out for years and everyone stopped playing). It won't be a problem in PlanetSide 2.

I'd say it's a perception thing as far a size is concerned. Most of the land in PS1 was really just for going over. With the territory system in PS2, all of the land will have tactical value, so all of it will have to be fun to fight on. Not to say there won't be any wide open spaces. The sea bed in the north of Indar being an example. We'll just have to wait and see.

It pretty much HAD to be F2P. I honestly don't believe a game like this could thrive on a P2P model. That said, if they offer a nice monthly premium membership for 15 bucks a month I would gladly pay it.

I was thinking it was too small.

i see it being pretty popular. one of the biggest things that at least keeps me playing games is the social aspect. since this is a MMO and has an outfit system, that pretty much solves that problem. i think one thing they could do to attract more players is make the game compatiable with macs...but who wants to do that :p

Perfectly said. And not to mention the community outside of the game is one in a million.

As long as they keeping pumping sandbox content and features then I could foresee us playing this game for years to come.

Too big? I'm more concerned that the 2000 player cap per continent is too low.

If they allow server switching and unify the entire playerbase that way then no, you would never have to play on an empty server.

even during ps1's lowest pop periods when a few hundred might be on at once, we still could pop lock at elast one cont and have a blast. if pops get low it will be much the same. larger open areas are less contested, and it comes down to base battles.

however now that tech has cought up, the game is being advertised and free, i cant see it happening. there are really really terrible games out there with massive playerbases.

Planetside has a way of being as big as it needs to be, hopefully planetside 2 will be the same.

I've always found if the pop isnt as high as you'd like (light night PS seshs, we've all been there), the big open battles end quicker and people end up a lot closer, so it doesnt feel to empty.
