Beta emails have *not* been sent. They won't be sent for a while yet.
Just FYI. We'll post more info when it's available. Until we post, any reports you hear of receiving beta emails are fabrications.

Altered this to be my Official PS Forum Dev/Mod response thread.

I will start including links to the actual threads. If you see my name as the one to update this, then you know there is new info here, I will NOT post on this thread unless there is a change.

As SmokeJumperPS pointed out, unless you hear it from us, it is not legitimate. We will notify the community with updates on when acceptance letters are being circulated, so we can best avoid these hoax situations. With the closing of this thread, hopefully everyone will know that I'm the last word on this.

We're still discussing this, but we're leaning toward including only north american testers simply because Planetside is sensitive to lag/latency issues (because it's an FPS) and the gap from England to California is pretty extreme when testing on the beta servers.
That would be the only reason though. We'll see.

Europeans were not screened away from beta because (reading his post above) "we're still discussing this".
No decision has been made and I hear your points about latency. Thanks for the info.

The above two posts were in reguards to Europeans in the BETA.

The pods are big enough for a single soldier, however, we set things up so that it's easy to coordinate a squad to drop together. The drop zone selection interface shows all squad mate positions on the map, so you can easily see where to go if others have dropped before you.
As for orbital stations...we've decided to remove those for now. They're still up our sleeves for later, but we're removing those due to a lack of entertaining things to do up in space at the moment. Instead, the Shuttle achieves near-orbit and drops the pods down without needing a stop at the Station. Basically, we are speeding up the return-to-planet cycle after boarding the Shuttle.

Just FYI. The actual drop pod mechanics, special effects, etc. are all still in the game...you just don't have to run through a mostly-empty orbital station to get to them now.

This is about Beta but will Legends EQ players have a better chance to get into the beta? Im mainly asking because on the Legends Server we players deal with alot of CS staff. I know this is a weird kinda question but from what i remember is i know Legends get into the EQ2 beta but does it also apply to PS? Cuz ive been following PS since i ever heard about it and that was like along time ago. Legend players are true dedicated players. We go the extra mile to get something done. Heck we pay 40 a month and im willing to pay anything for PS. IF there have been any posts about this. I havent seen them im sorry. But please give me a answer. I want PS to be a great game it has the potential to be new and oringnal which i love.

This really should go in the PlanetSide Questions forum, but ... truthfully, we are really doing our best to make sure that -everyone- gets a fair shot at beta. But we thank you for your support of EQ Legends

We are tracking certain statistics and will definitely make this available to you as a player. However, certain data such as how much life your enemy had left would probably cross the line in terms of relaying TOO much information. But our stance on hacking and cheating has not changed -- when we find out, it will be dealt with swiftly and with zero tolerance.

Don't know if this should be included in this particular thread, but here is a post by Dave G. regarding the mission generator, or lack thereof:

http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/planetside/Forum2/HTML/000161.html

SmokeJumperPS

We have a lot of ways to let you know where the fights are, but mission generators are not one of those ways.
We experimented with mission generators for a long time before finally coming to the conclusion that a) they were always going to be awkward and unwieldy if they were going to cover enough missions to simulate a battlefield, and that b) left to your own devices and by enabling you to form squads and outfits, most of those missions would be created by your peers and commanders without game-mechanic interference.

So, rather than force you into pre-canned missions, we've set up lots of mechanisms for you to be aware of what's going on in the world, command systems for your peers to gain abilities to make even further indications, and we have quite good communications systems.

All of that together should make it pretty easy for you to find a fight. Not only do you have "hot zone" indicators, but you'll also be able to tune into command channels and "see" where the action is by listening to them chat.

But your point about being the gal that missed the last dance at the party is taken to heart. We'll be working hard to ensure you don't have that same experience in Planetside.

Like I said, I don't know if this is the right place for this, and I don't want to step on anyone's toes (Good job MrVicchio!! :D), I just didn't see this posted anywhere yet.

Considering that many folks are using routers, especially on their cable and DSL modems (and really, you ought to be using one for security's sake), I'm confident we'll have a solution in place so you can enjoy PlanetSide. It may come in the form of instructions on which ports to open/forward, or you may have to simply set the DMZ for a specific computer. Now as to whether we'll allow multiple PCs at the same time behind the same router, that I'm not sure about off hand.

SmokeJumperPS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually, the animations had little to do with the decision. Although the number of animations required for us to do a prone position is actually quite high, it's still do-able.
We decided against Prone position because we feel that long-range snipers have enough advantages already (prone would make them even *harder* to spot than they already are). Plus, prone (or crawling while prone), will always make a game slower. We wanted to maintain a faster pace.

If you're a sniper and the above statement worries you, don't stress too much. There is a LOT of cover available in this game for you to crouch behind, or stand beside, when sniping.

*** NEW INFO!!!!***

As for an "olbie to now FAQ"...that's a good idea, but I definitely wouldn't know where to begin. So much has changed in the last year. That's one of the reasons we kept quiet for so long. We didn't want to spread misinformation by saying something and then changing it later.
Here's a list of the most common misconceptions that I know of:

- Global Economy. There is not a global economy in Planetside. We tried it and found it to be extremely stifling to the gameplay (running out of cash meant running out of bullets and thus missing out on the fun), as well as being nearly impossible to balance without such sophisticated economic systems...like taxes.

- Mission System. There is no mission system in Planetside. That too was tried, but it made gameplay far too structured and non-responsive. Battlefields need to ebb and flow at the will of the army's human commanders, not at the beck and call of a piece of software. So we spent a lot of time coming up with command infrastructures, communications systems, and intuitive map interfaces so you can find the action. The organization of your Outfits, we leave up to you.

- Apartments. There are no apartments in Planetside. That sort of thing *might* be discussed again in the future (although buildings for individual Outfits would be more probable), but Apartments don't enhance the main gameplay of Planetside. We're putting all of our efforts into the combat, the management of the war efforts, and communication. Apartments don't fit into that, and therefore, we're not doing them currently.

Hope this helps!

Cool info, but not new. I personally love the not going prone idea myself, this world is vast enough as it is, without hunting through the grass for snipers.

I also love the idea of no set mission system :D

i was looking forward to the mission system :(

some days i might have just felt like going solo

Ravon Dark
2002-11-19, 08:11 PM
Ok, the way that I gather isn't quite that bad, it's not that you can't go solo or even that they discourage it, it's that they don't like the premade missions. Instead you'll be able to see where buddies dropped in, etc, etc, I believe you'll be able to see a few hot spots as well, and choose your deat...err destination... yeah that's it. ;)

Solo? No problem. Gear up, and hop a pod into enemy territory.

Have yourself a good time. Kill till you die. Whatever. This sort of harrassment will be important to keeping the nme on their toes... they be able to just defend their fronts. Some drop pod (or pods) could come down any where at any time. You might have to do a little hiking to get to the nearest base, but so be it. There's a sprinting implant you can get... though I doubt it'll improve your average speed over any reasonable amount of time.

But you don't need some externally impossed mission system to do it.

I understand that commanders are going to be able to call out "hot zones", so you can find the big fights faster too, if that's what you're after.

KoldFusion
2002-11-20, 12:06 PM
not be over analytical but i believe you will not be able to drop in nme controlled areas..... just neutral and friendlies :D Of course i could be wrong and look like an A$$:p

Ravon Dark
2002-11-20, 12:15 PM
You have to drop outside their sphere of influence. ;) So you're right if you say that the enemy territory goes only as far as it's sphere of influence.

Hamma
2002-11-20, 12:22 PM
I am fairly sure you can only drop in neutral territory, which there will be no shortage of :D
