I'm using Blacklight: Retribution. Not putting a single penny into it, but it's a good tide over for a Free to Play FPS for an hour here and there.

Some other stuff I could recommend, but unfortunately aren't free are the Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia series. Also Bulletstorm had probably the best dialog I have ever had the benefit of listening to since the 1990's. Then there is Killingfloor. It often goes on sale on Steam for as low as $5, but I bought it for $20 and gotten almost 300 hours of 6 player team 'survival shoot em up' fun out of it.

"Beta will probably start Monday or Tuesday" isn't the most reassuring thing in the world. But assuming it does start today or tomorrow, I don't expect to be one of the first in, despite how I'm an active subscriber and whatnot. I still believe that the beta invites are being handed out based on your PC specs. Needless to say, I have a shitbox of a computer so I'm not anticipating getting in any time soon.

At this point we arnt dealing with keys anymore afaik, they will simply flag your account so that it can access beta and send u an email with the download link.

On the same boat. However, we'll see if I can run it on +50 fps in HD and medium/low settings, if I can, that's enough for me as a lap top player.

And regarding beta. Depending how much Jetlag there's from Chinajoy, devs just might to gather around the round table today to discuss whether there will be beta this week or not, perhaps tomorrow. Maybe on Wednesday, or who knows, perhaps the first wave, by approximately the size of 100 get in.

The PS2 dev team consists of a whole lot more than the guys that do PR. The reason those guys do a whole lot of PR is because they don't do a whole lot of dev. So, jetlag on them being back and beta start is strictly circumstance from what I understand.

Yes, John Smedley stated that a few days ago. My estimate is that all "active" vets will get in on day 1 (still crossing fingers for today) + the first batch of non-actives.
Those non-actives are a very hard to predict tho, but my guess is that all of them get in at least on day 3.

Indeed, the theory of concurrent users goes something like that. For 2000 people online at the same time, you'll need a pool of 25k people or so. That said, now that the game is new and the tests scheduled, the concurrent users will be higher, but for the original Planetside still to have maybe 300 people online on a daily basis, it's gonna mean somewhere between 3-5k subbers.

I have to agree with this. Before the free time people were subbing back up either out of excited nostalgia or "just in case it helps" to get into beta sooner (it did.) But now that the cat is out of the bag, the free time has expired, people, and we're looking at beta starting this week, I sincerely doubt very many people will care to resub much less continue their subs at this point.

To add, I don't think SOE needs Smed, Higby, or T-ray present in the offices to get the beta train rolling. There isn't some console where they all need to turn a key simultaneously and punch in a complicated 3 part pass code only they know in parts just to send out invites for the closed beta. Any potential delays will be from problems on their end, and I doubt said problems include jet lagged leadership.

Max pops I saw these weekend for VS were about 30-50 open slots on the 3-way continent du jour with jack squat going on anywhere else. What is pop lock? 150? 200? I don't know if they've lowered the pop lock back down from where it was for Planetside Day, but I figure at max you're talking about 400-450 total playing at peak, so maybe 2-3k subs total?

I think the first wave will be active vets only, with anytime vets at the end of this week. Anytime vets could be a huge number of people (the game had a pretty big following and who knows how many are actually going to download the thing), so maybe a week or two until the rest. Most if not all of the active subs will be invited today, possibly even inactives as well, with daily invites is my assumption. Smedley did say priority keys shouldn't be waiting very long in Twitter, like weeks at most.

Remember, even among the actives and inactives, one still would have to had submit towards PS2 beta access to be on the selection list. I just hope I get in sooner rather than later. I'm on vacation this week with no where to go, and this was entirely coincidental. I feel like God is setting me up to be the butt of another one of his sick, twisted jokes as a result... granting me access on my last day.

EDIT: And for the record, T-ray is apparently tossing out beta keys like he's armed with a Terran Republic mini-gun on twitter, he just seems to have a pet peeve in obvious new twitter accounts keeping the egg avatar.
