I have seen people wondering how exactly big are the continents, and i have found a image to compare the map size from Arma 3, Indar, and Caspian border from bf3.

You make me sad.....*starts making rope into noose* the republic is not pleased. Thanks for fixing the link, but the republic must take a strong stance in this unless there are red and black drop pods in your future. =p but cool image.

Wow arma is around 5 times the size of ps2. But arma has square miles of nothingness. At least ps2 has a building/site within a couple hundred yards of each other.

Holy fuck Arma is huge. I think Indar has it just right. I don't really want to walk around for hours without fighting someone.

Arma 3 has the perfect simulation enviorment, especially with Limnos

that was a badass image eh?
I really think its good sized.

And those maps can fit but a fraction.of.the players

I can't take between game scales seriously unless someone does a legitimate pace count in each for proper measurement.
Eh?
Referring to bf3 player limits and sometimes being lonely on a map. Not as relative as player scale is much larger.
Old auraxis was fairly daunting on foot not so much via reaver

Size is mostly relative. If you want a proper comparison, you will need to look at footspeed and average vehicle speed.
With this in mind, ARMA3 will be much larger than you see in the image.

Limnos is 305 km2, Indar is 8x8km 2, caspian is 1.2km

Arma 3, realism represent!
Edit: LOL, censored the caps lock.

I love ArmA excessively but its different gameplay, so the size of the map is built for that gameplay. I think the 8x8km continent should be just fine with how far apart objectives are spaced in this game, but not so close together that it feels overly cramped or their is to much going on to go for one objective. (based purely off knowledge gathered from pictures and videos)

PS2 will have 3 conts at launch.
PS2's conts are all heavily hand-crafted from scratch to finish. Random terrain generation? Nope.
The reason they decided to devide the 3 continents (I mean, loading screen. Not like Just Cause 2's 31km*31km open world) was because they didn't want a single continent to have 4000, 6000 or 8000 players shooting each other at the same time.
Has anyone ever played games like TES Arena, Daggerfall, or Dark and light? Of course, size/vastness is one of the most important immersion factors in a virtual world, but the attention to detail of these 3 games -compared to current terrain generation/art toolset- were just bad.
Cant wait to shoot some zombies on this huge island.

Nice picture, finally something i can show some friends who havent played PS1 some scale of the game.
Though it should not be forgotten that Planetside2 will have multiple of those continents and, as someone here already pointed out, much much more players per km².
PS2 will have 3 conts at launch.
Did not know that (that there are exactly three), is there also information available as to more continents being added? Is it likely that we will see all original PS1 continents?

Limnos is 305 km2, Indar is 8x8km 2, caspian is
Please tell me you do mean that Indar is 64km2, not 8km2.
Edit; in the image, Indar should be ~1/5th of the Limnos ARMA map. So I'm figuring you've got something wrong with the scaling. At least to my eyes.

He did write 8x8km² which is 64km² and therefore correct.

I think its ok, depends if you dont count the water (especially the bay of Limnos).

Indar's size is 8km*8km = 64㎢
Current max draw distance of PS2 is around 4km~4.3km(confirmed in one of these TB footages)
SOE have their plan to reintroduce all PS1's continents to PS2 post-launch(in some form). Not that they won't make any brand-new continents, though.
Hope it helps ;)

Yeah, Indar is 64km. Not as small as I think it is in this image... absolutely gigantic, really.

This is why I'm not worried about the map size. In this instance it seems quality trumps quantity.

Limnos 305km2
PS2 192km2 at launch (64x3 :p)
Anyone know the server capacity for ArmA?
6000 PS2 players works out to 31.25 players/km2 if we all spread out

I think 64 square kilometres is more than epic enough.

You can take any measurement and call it a meter when there's no way of actually measuring it with something to reference.

Game engines do have a scale which translate to real life equivalents. In this case all 3 engines do know what 1m is and that scale was chosen carefully by the developers to ensure everything looks good according to scale.
So its absolutely comparable.

Do you realize that this is what some people say about Planetside 1 and 2? When told that PS2 maps are 8 km X 8km, compared to a maximum 2X2 map in BF and much smaller in CoD?
So, a huge ArmA map does not mean going for hours without fighting someone. By definition, you need transport(helicopters for example), forward bases to respawn at, etc. Sure, sometimes the flight or drive to the next target and forward base construction area might take 5-10 minutes, but then it's done until you win or get repulsed. If you're walking across the entire map, you're doing it wrong.

Well to save on memory, they shrunk Indar down to like this big.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7bj6iQ9MDyM/SkmAq0gayPI/AAAAAAAAFXA/Wd0UFo7ac2Y/s400/this_big.jpg
They made all the soldiers super tiny so you can't tell though.
Smoke and mirrors.

Lets put this in a manner everyone can related to rather than numbers. Many of you have played Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion correct?
Well that game world is roughly 40km^2 and I'm sure you remember spending forever to get somewhere when not using fast travel.
Indar is a full third larger in terms of area. So there you go, assuming that SOE uses the same meter as everyone else, your experiences there should directly translate in terms of size.
My advice? Don't try to walk anywhere, bring your horse. :P
P.S. Skyrims gameworld is about the same size as Cyrodiils in Oblivion if I recall correctly, just in case you haven't played Oblivion.

Arma/ofp is more of a simulation enviroment then a game.
Its a sandbox-ish infantry simlator and is all about advancing sloooooowely while observing your surroundings and thinking carefully about your next action.
Ps2 is of course not so. Although i wouldnt mind if we had to arrange transportation for troops/resources but so far it seems the game will not require such organization.
As a note though:
If the was a game like arma that featured 6000 players on a constant battlefield i would never need another game ever again. (wwiionline doesnt count)

You can up the server cap that much in ARMA, just no one has done it. Most i have seen is 600 people.
