View Full Version : Hate tells and you in PS2.

Not having been able to find a definitive answer yet if /tells to enemy empire factions will be in PS2 we can play around with the idea a bit in a thread I feel.

Firstly, to those that didn't play PS1, in it you could /tell any player, there was an /ignore feature but no /anon. Besides, putting ordinance down kinda announces you're about anyway. :p Now you maybe thinking all this lead to was empire spying, and there was some of that, but what it mostly lead to was the hate tell. Which evoked various responses in people, some liked having it in game, others didn't.

I, personally, never sent them but did sometimes delight in getting them (never got that many being an average FPSer, but Suppressors/Radiating BFR pilots could annoy people nicely) and occasionally further winding up the person who sent it. On Werner we had a particularly infamous player for them by the name of "Cupid" we all liked to imagine them with high blood pressure and popping veins in their neck.

The spying aspect of them in PS2 will be rather pointless anyway, should they make it in, with the apparent ease of "fourth-empiring" via second/third accounts.

So er....few questions. If you're an old PS1'er. Did you send 'em? Did it bother you when you got 'em?

If you're not an old PS1'er. How would you feel about them being in game in PS2? Would you send 'em? Would it bother you to get 'em?

I'm not a PS1'er but I love those type of messages. Back when I played COD I would get hate messages a lot on Xbox live (not to toot my own horn), and I loved every single one of them. But I see /tells and other such messages not as just a hate thing, but to build friendly rivalries as well. Hell, whenever I play a game and my enemy does something that I think is fucking fantastic (even if it kills me), I'll congratulate them on it. For instance, I remember one match I was playing in COD and this kid pops me with a throwing knife from halfway across Dome. What did I do? I called him a bastard and congratulated him on the kill. Next round, I hunted him down with a throwing knife of my own and so began a friendly rivalry. So if someone gets a /tell from me it generally won't be out of hate (depends on if I drunkenly play PS2 :) )but more out of respect.
I mean, I have similar stories in almost every game I've played, that one was just readily available.

Never sent a hate tell, only sent tells complimenting an enemy on thier skill/sneakyness etc etc

Recieved a fare few hate tells and always blanked the message.. no point aggrevating a situation makes for a bad gaming experiance and at the end of the day we are all playing for fun.

Couple of things I forgot.

Hate tells were not always hatey (no such word). Sometimes they were actually good natured sportsmanship like tells. Which could lead to a positive outcome. :)

Secondly, again, with the apparent ease of setting up more accounts, should they block /tell between empires those really wishing to send one could always just switch accounts and find you with an empire mate character before the /ignore lands. So blocking them could be moot anyway.

I say they should allow for the personal/individual option to turn off cross faction chat(ya know, /tells from the other factions) if you'd like. That way if you don't want to receive any you dont have to, and if you do, you're more than able to.

It's one of the best parts of EVE....

Seriously. Harvesting tears is a profession. If people take time to send you smack know that, not only have you beaten them in game, irl you have broken their spirits.

Some folks get off on collecting those sorta things. Me? I feel bad for the person taking it so seriously. It's just a game, yo. Don't stress.

I agree with therandomone, I think. I'd like the option for cross-team chat to be an option but, imo, off by default so the more fragile minded players who don't know where the button is aren't harassed by some pendejo's whole outfit just for having a good run.

In EVE, everyone who straps on a gun knows (or learns right quick) that tears are precious cargo that only your bullets can find but in other games the mindset is not the same. I've seen enough players run off of games because their communities are total toilets and I'd like PS2 to not be one of them.

I'm not a philosopher like most of the people on here but I do play PVP games for human interaction and calling the baddies childish names is part of that. Much rather call the other side wtfomgn00b or lux0r rather than my own team...

I didn't get many hate tells in the original, and i never sent any, Wasn't a problem to me.

If they were also possible in ps2, I still wouldn't use em, and still wouldn't be bothered one way or another.

i loved getting hate tells!

and i had a lot of fun, winding the senders up and forcing them to explode their boiling head ;)

but i sent only a few myself in all my ps1 years.
mostly i sent respect tells, when i was killed in a very skillful or creative way.
only very obvious cheaters with moving corpses and the like got some real hate tells from me ;)

so i want this feature in the game! there simply is no reason to forbit interempire tells.
like the OP said, there are more than enough easy ways to spy, so it wouldn´t make any difference. (2nd free account, spy/map-apps, etc.)

Removing cross faction communication in PS2 would take a lot away from the community aspect of PS. What makes PS great is the ability for players to build a rep....whether that rep is built from your personality, your skills, or both, it's what makes combat interesting with enemies you KNOW.

Again, EVE is good for popping some role play in the Bio, or something witty/childish....but you get to know ppl.....

Hate and hacker tells is the only reason to play online video games. There is no better feeling than being called a hacker when you play legitimately. It is the ultimate compliment.

I don't know why either, but it does. Reading chat as some guy whines because you stole their gear is just fun.
Watching a guy rage as he steps round the same corner over, and over, and over.....fun.

Psychologically I have no idea....I laugh when somebody falls over, I generally help if they start to bleed out tho.....

Never really understood it. There is of course a difference between "friendly rivalry" tells and proper hating... I like to send/receive a congratulations or a friendly, non-offensive insult - I like the social side of online games.

I don't like when people take it too seriously and they start trying to be personal or genuinely offensive... these people need to a) get over it and b) take some medication and they're probably a bit highly strung.

What's worse though, is how the language of online is changing so that stuff doesn't mean what it used to mean. For an old git like me that's just confusing.... When did "noob" stop meaning "hey, I see you're new at this" to become "hey, you suck at this". And when did it make any sense to say "hey, you suck at this" to someone who just killed you, because that logically suggests that the [killed] person doing the calling sucks at it a tiny bit more that the person who did the killing... #logicFail #mentalBreakdown

It's a game. People feel like you do when they take things too seriously. The same people that don't understand this are the ones that will sling vile insults left and right when they get butthurt.

Games are meant to be won, and if you are doing something that warrants "I hate your guts" from someone, then you are doing something very right.

A NC cloaker ran a zipline to an island nearby and I spotted him while I was sniping at said island. After a minute or two there was never another flash from an zipline leaving that island ergo he must still be there. So I went and found him at the top of some crystals spamming nades at some TR dudes. Shot him with the bolt driver and died to the TR.

He was angry enough to accuse me of hacking when I was just playing the game smart. This makes me happy.

well i get some things. for example sometimes players talk to much crap all day long. i enjoy beating them, and i enjoy them crying about it. but the only tells i ever sent were jesting fun between people i fought often.

after playing for so long, you start to reconize other players, even if they are not importent, after years, running into the same vs clan or player time after time, you almost kinda of know each other. one of my best relatioships i started in planetside was with an NC, i backstabed him maybe 50 times within a few months, he killed me a bunch to. eventually we started to reconize each other and it became almost like a game, who could find who first, and kill them.

we never talked outside of PS, but we sent tells all the time in game, some times "hate tells" realyl arnt all that hateful

Circa 2009-2011 Planetside, there was a huge uprising in hacks. Hackers were very prevalent due to trial accounts and it was almost a daily occurance to see a hacker online wrecking havok. People in turn became a whole lot more paranoid. They'd call you a hacker over the stupidest things sometimes like get bombed by a Lib or being run over by a tank..."FUCKING COF HACKER"

There's also a whole lot of angry people that play PS.

PS1, mostly got h8 from cloakers that weren't very good at being cloakers. Especially considering my most used weapon is the Bolt Driver.

"Howd you know i was there haxor!" CUD, or Interlink etc.
"Howd you see me running a mile away haxor!" You were running.
"Howd you know i was on that wall haxor!" Tracers work both ways.
"Howd you see me from in that vehicle!" You can drive with DL on (albeit not well).
"Howd you hit me i was behind (insert object)!" Headshot or toeshot, 1 Hitbox means you stuck out a bit.

I don't know what PS2 will bring due to certs and weapon combinations being unknown. But I still foresee much of the same with the added hate tells about head-shots and accusations of auto-aim.

I think the hate tells were an important part of building the empire rivalry. Being able to communicate with your enemy directly humanized them that much more. I admit, I would send hate tells, but they were always good natured, and they were always well received. Many times I'd even compliment a player on a good kill especially in a dogfight, but let them know that I'd be looking for my revenge.

Judging by the attitude the head devs have for ribbing each other, I'd expect cross-empire communication to stay in the game.

Hate tells and being called a hacker are the two biggest compliments you can receive. It means you are doing what you are doing well. Sadly not a PS1 vet, but my experiences in gaming have gotten me many hate tells and hacker accusations. Whenever I receive one, I take it just as well as when a friendly compliments my shooting or similar.

Hate tells are a waste of time to read, and a waste of time to send. I have been gaming for a long time now, and admit, at one point, I took games way too seriously, but that stopped 15 years ago, the same time that the current generation of hate-tellers were born.

Some smack talk just enhance the fun. As long as the smack talk is done with a wink its ok. We who grow up during the 80's maybe remember Hulk Hogan in WWF.
