View Full Version : Will the empire specific AV from PS1 make a return in PS2

I know everyone has their own rocket launcher, and I expect the somewhat iconic Deci to make a return. What about the Striker, Phoenix, and Lancer?
Namely the Lancer I loved that gun and stored more of those in my locker than even post-buff-pre-nerf lashers!
It was the only man portable weapon that was a relevant threat in the vehicle dominated outside world besides maybe, and I mean maybe, the flaklet.
actually, nvm, flaklet is irrelevant. 2 cans to take a mossie, and diddly dick against tanks...
because the striker cant reload until the last shot completes its long journey to its target... irrelevant
Deci is close to relevant outdoors, you can use secondary mode and actually stand half a fighting chance against a lone mossie, but limited ammo reserves and a slow rocket make long range or anything more armored a nightmare.
The phoenix is useful for hiding on top of a mountain and harassing foot mobiles, that's it.
but the Lancer, it does it all! a fast projectile that wont get juked like a phoenix by air cav and the ability to engage deadly ground vehicular threats from far off elevated positions, enough shots in the mag to take the most common threat out, ESAV so plenty of sustainability, smart fire not a dumb seeker that never finds its target. Just the perfect AV overall!

I for one hope the Phoenix doesn't make a return. While it was very fun to use, it made life as a MAX when fighting NC miserable and unfun.
Also when fighting as an NC you would always have a dozen or more people just sitting outside an enemy base phoenix sniping instead of actually helping take the base which hurt NC more than helped. The Phoenix was a double negative in that regard imo and a bad weapon design.

Loved the Phoenix but the Lancer was great too imo. For all the reasons the OP stated. Each ES AV weapons had it's own unique bonus uses to them. They were all different in how they were used though. I really hope they keep the empire specific stuff in PS2 tbh... It's one of the things that made PS unique to begin with.

Gogo, the almighty search through the forum... And you will find the answer.

The Phoenix is weapon that shouldn't exist >.< Phoenix sniping from inside of a base is stupidly annoying.
I thought the Lancer and Striker were fine. Actually had to be visible to the enemy (more or less) to shoot them.

Aye there is evidence in neurotoxins cert page that different flavors of AV weapons will make a return, although they are available to all empires it seems. Dumb fire, tv guided, lock on, and cheap ass plasma beam have all been mentioned.

Striker could be interesting to see again, even as a ripplefire/ swarm launcher.
Lancer deserves to be remade, it required a level of skill to use well (bit like the TR burster).
Pheonix deserves the scrapheap, it created no-go zones around any base, tower or convenient hill where anything big/slow enough (only air/atv and cloakers were safe) to get hit would take regular near unavoidable damage (outanging was the primary method of dodging a pnix spammer hiding inside a door/behind a hill/wall).
It also totally replaced the decimator for NC troopers as it was faster travelling, similar damage and faster re-use with better ammo capacity (pnix + 1 ammo box = 10 shots total, taking up less space than 2 decimator rocket tubes, 3 shots each.) Yes there is no more inventory system now but there will still be ammo-pools and reloading.
It was one of those things that don't make for good gameplay.

the NC were annoying, but honestly the tr's auto lock was arguably a bigger problem. sure the nc could max snipe out the base, but aircraft had nearly no chance against TR anti air.
the lancer, i liek it, it was unique, id love to see it built upon.

All ES AV worked differently. And you had to use them in different situations as well as work around them if you were on the receiving end. They couldn't really balance them with each other per se' due to the differences. I'd still like to see, even if it isn't the same type of abilities as the ones in PS1, the same diversity in ES weapons for each empire.

You're kidding right? There were only big warning signs and sounds to tell you someone has their piss weak AV pointing at you. Reavers could take a full magazine easy.
PS2, locking on seems to take some time, but at least a successful hit looks devastating.

I was able to jump on a wall and kill a pheonix. thye were distracted.
I hope that they come back but I think they might be harder to use. Probbibly longer charge time and less acuuracy and much less RoF for the lasher. Same for the pheonix but much reduced range or timer for missles.

the problem was, it was nigh un avoidable damage. ps2 has implemented counters to this already however.

I thought they were all fun, players who complained about imbalance had no idea what they were talking about.

I remember seeing "Lancer Anti Material Plasma Rifle" in a screenshot someone took of the cert trees at E3. I'm assuming that was for enhancing that very beautiful weapon in various ways.
I'm so excited, because it's my favourite FPS weapon of all time.

We have seen screenshots of names of some of the iconic AV weapons (Lancer, I think). So I'd expect them all to return, but in a different form than what we had in PS1.
Speaking of PS1, I know exactly how the design discussion went when they came up with the original TR Striker:
"Hey lets balance it so that the Striker can destroy any vehicle in 6 shots"
"Ok..."
"And then let's give it a clip size of only 5 missles!"
"Brilliant!!"

I really really really hope that the sound from the lancer makes a return in some form. Even if the new lancer isn't quite the same and the old - as long as it sounds the same, I'll be happy.
nothing better than a bunch of AV soldiers charging a BFR with that racket going on.

I loved fighting the NC, just for the fact that I always knew there would be people camera sniping with their Phoenix. A whole bunch of easy pickings for cloakers and snipers

They could be a pain if you were sniping since they didn't require line of sight, but yeah as a cloaker they were gifts, and it never got old stabbing them to death. :D

I doubt they'll be Empire exclusive, a version of each weapon for all empires with minor tweaks and name changes.
I also highly doubt the Lancer will return resembling it's PS1 version.
I really won't miss the Phoenix, as someone who used it quite heavily. It was great at taking down maxes, but trying to destroy vehicles, especially aircraft, was an EXTREMELY tedious and often disastrous venture. Not to mention, it was only really as useful when you were behind cover, or so close to something that the dumb fire couldn't miss (which usually wasn't that fun of a place to be.) It was imbalanced in the truest, weirdest way: sometimes, it did its job fantastically, too well even. Other times, it failed miserably.
In its place, I'd like an AV railgun please.
