Help us help scientists studying Alzheimer’s Huntingston’s, and many cancers by using your computer to fold proteins.

What is protein folding?

Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." While protein folding is critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology much of the process remains a mystery. (Source (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/HomePage))

For more information on protein folding please check out: folding.stanford.edu/Science (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Science)

“Gosh Greenie, how do I get started??”
Glad you asked…

How to get started: (instructions compliments of folding.sandford.edu for V7 fahcontrol which is recommended for CPU, SMP and GPU)

First you’ll need to obtain a passkey from folding.stanford.com.

Goto: Standford Passkey Page (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py) and fill out the form. A passkey will be emailed to you. Save this passkey.

Download (https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/FAHClient/wiki/BetaRelease) and run the installer.
Click Next, I Agree, Next. (be sure to read any terms and notices)
Enter a name, team# 219453, and your Passkey.
Select a Preferred Mode, GPU & SMP, SMP only, GPU only, or Uniprocessor.

Explanation of modes:

GPU: Single or multiple discrete cards
SMP: Multicore (2+) CPU
GPU & SMP: Creates two folding slots, one for your CPU and one for your GPU
Uniprocessor: Single core CPU

Click Install.
Done.

You can now find the FAHcontrol under Start->Programs->FAHClient->FAHControl

Simply click the shortcut and it will start folding immediately.

Detailed instructions: Instructions (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinGuide)

Running Linux? You can find other clients at HERE (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther) follow the provided instructions.

Once you get started you can track your points at folding.extremeoverclocking.com (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/).

I'll sticky this. Maybe try getting Hamma to put this on the front page to get more attention. Tech forum being at the bottom of the forum doesn't get the most views is all.

I would join, but I don't want my electricity bill to shoot up. Shame I'm not the dorms anymore.

Thanks for the Sticky Goku. Thought about posting an ad/reminder with a link to the Tech thread in one of the Discussions or even Lounge, but didn't want a wrist slap lol.

Understandable about the power bill. Though, if you fold just a couple of hours a day it shouldn't hurt to much ;)

Cheers,

GG

That sounds fine to me however you may just want to double check with Hamma is all.

I mistakenly merged this thread to the Can your rig run PS2 one, so you lost some posts. Sorry about that.

Stats updated. Beta sure has taken a lot of my folding time, hehe.

Keep in mind, a folding computer is the best way to heat your home during the winter months!!

Overclock them processors! Don't stop 'till you're at 5 GHz!

We need to do a folding member recruitment drive.

What is your computer doing when you aren't playing PS2? Sitting there, collecting dust? Put that sucker to work! Fold when you sleep! Fold when you go to work/school!

Fold today!

GG

I woke up this chilly morning and went "Damn! That's cold! I gotta turn on the heater!" Then I went downstairs and opened the FAH client.

Hey, quick update for the 680: they no longer require a beta client to run, mine's running just fine with the standard FAH client.

Thanks Ailos! I'll update the op tonight!

Been using GPU tracker myself. I may switch back to the main FAH client.

Sidenote: Nearly 1 million points in January alone!

Cheers,

GG
