...And it's rather good. In the same way an overclocked 670 performs similarly to a stock 680, the 660 ti, when overclocked, performs about as well as a stock 670, or about 8% slower at stock clocks. It'll supposedly come in at $100 cheaper than the 670, which would seem to make the cost of the 670 hard to justify.

This is exciting, was going to order my build tonight / tomorrow. Might be saving a nice amount of money for similar performance. Currently have the Gigabye gtx 670 picked, but if a 660 Ti offers spot on similar performance for 100 less.. Well, that might be just fine with me. How difficult is it to OC a gpu? Basically would it be more effort than going into bios and changing variables to easily put the output to the range of a stock 670? I've never done a bit of overclocking. Plan on doing a lot of reading / youtube before I OC anything.

So now for me, switching out the 670 and putting in a 660ti means saving 160 (100 less 670-660ti, 60 less buying borderlands 2) if you planned on getting borderlands 2 and haven't already, this 660 ti is that much more appealing.

Just keep in mind everyone throws their arms up in the air over how a lower card gains you access to a higher performing card when overclocked. People were raving how the 670 when overclocked can match or exceed a 680 in performance. Keep in mind all these cards can be overclocked. An overclocked 670 will likely still have a lead over a 660 Ti overclocked.

OCing a GPU is easy also.

Very worst case, it is comparable to the 7870
Best case, it approaches/equals the 7950 sometimes.

I think it really falls between them on average and comes down to price and brand comfort.


For me personally I was budgeting about $280 for a new card (any of which would be a significant upgrade). This was pretty solidly 7870 before, but now I'll eat an extra $20 over budget to get this card. (Oddly enough 7870 prices seemed to go up yesterday to 660 ti prices.) For me that $20 also buys the "brand comfort" as I've had some very negative Catalyst experiences in the past.

The 7950 is still probably a greater value, but it'd stretch my budget even further.

I think the decision here, when you've got a flexible budget, kind of comes down to the secondary aspects.

When you consider you get GPU PhysX (in the games that use it) and the greater energy efficiency plus at least 7870 performance I see little reason to want a 7870, unless you fit only into one of it's strong points.
If your budget stretches to the 7950 I think it's worth it.

Of course, there's the memory bandwidth issue, which may effect longevity. But I think planning ahead with computer hardware is often a silly game to play anyway.

If you were aiming for $300 the GTX 660 Ti is perfect. All I was saying that while overclocking cards are highly beneficial reaching the next tier card, that one also can be OCed. 660 Ti was the card I was waiting for to get competition going again, so I'm glad Nvidia finally brought it out. Cross your fingers for upcoming price wars. 4800/GTX 200 series had great competition to the point we saw the 4870 getting into the low $200 range.

You called it, < 1080 the 660Ti looks a good deal, though in the UK there is only a £5 between 660Ti and 7950, as soon as you start thinking about > 1080p the 7950 looks to be the better card.

I am not sure the 7870 will be feeling too much of a drop in sales, there is still a ~15% jump in price to the 660Ti and to me the 7870 is most appealing to to those who could not stretch their budgets.

(Sorry about the necro, better than starting a new thread on it I suppose)

I got the non-Ti version of the 660 and the thing is amazing. It pushes 50 FPS in moderate battles on maxed out settings. I can't even hear the fan of the card, unlike my old 460 which sounded like a jet engine.

I'm throwing every game I have at the 660 but nothing ever dips below 30 FPS on maxed settings.

Both the versions are good cards. If you don't need the extra horse power a 660 should be plenty for what you need. I downgraded from a 7950 to 7850 1GB. I don't really even notice the performance difference between the two. Then again I'm not playing BF3 max settings or Crysis 2 w/ max mods.
