What, in your opinion, is the best RTS of all time?
Personally, I have to say Sacrifice, an awesome, yet frequently overlooked title. (If you don't believe me, check out the reviews here (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/3730.asp).)

Starcraft = best right out of box
Total Annihilation = best after you got some of the new units, etc
For the time, no other games have come close

starcraft !!! I loved being the zerg and swarming with 300 zerglings nothing stopped them... just those damn terran bunkers.
I hope they make a second one the teams should be
Terran
Zerg
Prottos (Light and good)
Space Orcs:D
Prottos (Dark and Evil)
IT WOULD BE SOOOO COOL

The Original Dark Reign was the most fun to me in a classic RTS sense. Ground Control owns everything from a tactical sense, and Battlezone was just too damn good.

WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne by far. StarCraft and Warcraft 3: Reign Of Chaos close behind. Then Emperor: Battle for Dune, and Strifeshadow, and finally Age of Kings: The Conquerors. Strifeshadow is an excellent game, but incredibly overlooked. Online you will see about 5-10 players at a time. You can download the demo here. (http://www.ethermoon.com/main/index.phtml)
You can only play as Dark Elves in the demo, Sylvans and Accursed are off limits.

StarCraft, WarCraft, and C&C are all good, but I'd say Battle Realms. I just like settting buildings on fire, then running off.

I'd say the original C&C, just because it was what got me into RTS's. And it was probably the first game that actually require me to do some thinking. They did their best to put you in some bad situations back then...

Age of Kings/Conquerers for strategy, by far.
Starcraft was alright strategy wise plus had the Use Map Settings games.
Warcraft 3 was good for the Custom games, but for the normal games the strategy was pathetic. Amass a mob of units and attack.

This dude is smart, he sees a good RTS series when he sees one.
C&C is 40 times better than any RTS I have ever played in my life.
I've played every RTS imaginable and I have never met anything better. The first Command & Conquer still holds the current record of selling the most games in the whole world, even more than starcraft. Check the new guiness world book of records!! I saw it there. To me, Starcraft is a grandma's game where you wait very long just to build one stupid ass unit. It takes a lllooonnnng ass time to build shit in Starcraft and the units feel kinda cheap. Don't even let me get started with warcraft. Westwood will always be the best RTS maker ever. Dune series was spectactular for a one time epic singleplayer and a still playable multiplayer series. To me Red Alert 2 will always be my favorite, I mean, WHATS NOT TO LIKE!!! The multiplayer is ingenious and it just kicks ass period!!!! That takes reall skill than just building 5 battle shit Cruisers and duking it out with yamato guns.
Command and Conquer baby!!!

It was Total Annihilation that made me change my computer at the moment.
I liked a lot Dune 2, but the impossibility to select several units at once was a big default.
Stracraft is good, but to win you need more speed than real thinking.
I had a lot of fun with Homeworld, Cataclysm and Ground control, and I'll buy Homeworld 2 and Ground Control 2 without hesitations, but my favorite is still Total Annihilation.

yes, total annihilation was great, very good sleeper hit
but my all favorite has to be Warcraft 3.
i love cinematic, story driven games, and that's what the Warcraft 3 is.
i loved the characters in it. the world that blizzard created for the warcraft universe was already amazing, but with warcraft 3 they truly brought it to life in 3d and wonderful colors. i loved the atmosphere of the game (who can deny the coolness of the Night Elves? who can't feel sorry for the Orcs? who can't hate the Undead? who can't identify with the humans?)
the game also had a wonderful strategy element in it, making you really care for your troops because you have less of them. you don't really make just hordes of troops and through them at your enemy and win by brute force. you have to use real strategy, scout to know what your enemy is making and then decide the best combination of units and skills to counter and retaliate.
truly one of my favorite games of all time

Earth 2150 is by far the best RTS ive ever played.
StarCraft. No question.
The game isn't just about building a shitload of guys, then sending them off. When you get a group of people who know the many facets of the game, it's not just a race to see who can reach their supply limit first.
There are so many elements to that game and the rock-paper-scissors style balancing is perfect.
I've been lazy in going to get WarCraft 3. I wanna, but like I said, I'm lazy. And now that C&C: Generals is out, I'm torn between the two. Though I think I might check out some of the other titles in this list.

Starcraft, plain and simple. Nothing beats the sound of grunts gunning down wave after wave of zerglings. :D Know they need to make a MMO game about Starcraft and that would really have my money! :D

Statistically; Starcraft. Though, I personally cannot decide. Lately, I've been playing Warcraft 3... So I'd have to say that at the moment, it's my favorite. Overall, I don't know.

Naw. I just think that you really did a good job speaking Warcraft 3's strong points. It's really an excellent game (again, expansion makes it FAR better) but there's so much more to it than just the game. It's good to know that (some) people actually recognize this.

yeah, some ppl seem to overlook story and atmosphere in games now days and overemphasize action, action, action or something. in my opinion, story, charachers, and atmosphere are the 3 most important elements of a good game bar the actual gameplay.
a game should play like a movie or book that you control.

OMG.....Please tell me you are joking.....I wish I could let you all in on my Command And Conquer collection and you can see how much Command And Conquer kills starcraft. Guys...You make me cry at the fact that you prefer star craft over command and conquer....It hurts me bad. Come on guys, try something new other than grand ma's star craft game. I will personally buy Star Craft: Ghost for X-box but thats all I'll ever play. The first day I got StarCraft I GOT SO BORED WITH IT.......It takes too freakin long to build anything in that game and when you win a battle you think to yourself what a f***ing waste of time.
Well, im going to cry somemore over Command & Conquer and kill some Allied Armies to make me feel better while you take your ugly ass alien zerglings and marines to get bitch slapped countless times by the protoss. (Protoss I must agree are a cool race though....Shields, energy swords, psychic abilities, and advance technology. Whats not to like?)
Any one want to join me in Red Alert 2, my names are Laser8541 and Lasertob. Put me in your buddy list and we will play. Thx and as for you StarCraft gamers....Please try Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 and I promise you will so kick yourself for loving Star Craft.
I dont hate anyone so please dont quote me with something bad.
Peace.....

I liked Starcraft more. Better online play IMO. Easier to set up at least. Also, I just increase game speed for faster gameplay.

That sounds more like an RPG than a RTS. Yes, story characters and atmosphere are of paramount importance in RPGs, I believe the mechanics of the game become the most important factor when judging a RTS.

like i said, bar the actual gameplay.
but if you look at blizzard RTS games, they do it perfectly, blending great gameplay with a great story, wonderful atmosphere, and good character development.
