Would you pay for pay to unlock Ultimate Graphics?

I realize this isn't in the game yet (or so I heard), and seeing how it would really push your system to its limits, so you would have to have already spent some serious dough on your system, would you pay a nominal one time fee to unlock this?

I don't really see how it could be more than about $5-$10 or so at least I personally wouldn't pay much more than that (I think)

Some other games have gone the route of high resolution texture packs as paid DLC, so this would be pretty close to that.

Would you?

This seems like a bad idea. Paid texture packs as DLC? Bethesda released an official one for free, and modders released a 2K pack as well...for free. I mean if you have quad-SLI 680's you can probably afford to pay 10 bucks to unlock the option but why would SOE do it? It is pure money grabbing from what I can see to do that, and they have already said they have future-proofed this game as much as possible. So why force everyone to pay down the line? This also contradicts the free-to-play model they seem to have adopted so far.

This idea comes right out of the money-grubbing playbooks of today's quintessential evil, soulless, life-sucking corporation. I'm hoping Planetside players have the sense not to tolerate this. So absurd is this idea that I don't think the idea ever crossed the dev's minds.

Seems like I'm the only one who thinks this is, if not good, at least an intersting idea. After reading the OP I was really suprised by the general entitlement in this thread.

It's right that most high-res texture packs that have been releases in the past have been free, but they have also been mostly for full-priced console ports and/or multi-platform releases. Planetside on the other hand is a F2P pc-exclusive, while still offering (atm) the graphical fidelity of a big AAA Game.

Creating the assets needed for that high
quality takes huge amounts of money, huge amounts SOE won't make back by selling the game, since after all It's free but hopefully with mostly cosmetic micro-transactions. And increasing the graphic fidelity of the game sounds a lot like something cosmetic to me.
I also assume the majority of future PS2 players won't even be running the game on high settings, let alone ultra since people like us, willing to spend 600€ on a graphic card are in the minority.
So it really rubs me the wrong way when people feel like they are entitled to something that they really aren't. Texture packs for console ports or full-price releases should be free but I would be very happy to pay for Ultra Settings on a game that despite its awesomeness didn't cost me a single cent.

This was written on a crappy touch keyboard, excuse the crappy formating.

I feel like I saw one of the devs post that they aren't unlocked because there currently aren't consumer computers that can handle it yet. It's more of a "future" thing.

No, certainly not for a Multi-Player/MMO game. Maybe for a single player game like Skyrim assuming 1) It wouldn't kill performance and 2) The actual improvement in appearance is worth the $5-$10.

It isn't about entitlement, as I too shun the modern generation's overwhelming sense of self, but I draw a line when it comes to an incomplete product with purchasable 'additions,' and a complete product with purchasable extensive content: The former I will never tolerate even the beginnings of it, and the latter can also go out of control but if its F2P then I have to give these guys my money somehow for a job well done, providing they don't try and shaft me a la EA.

EDIT: Also...its a texture pack...at a higher resolution...they didn't have to go gather all new textures and rework their artists to create them; all they did was rerender the textures at higher resolutions and probably adjust some parameters on certain layers like UV, normal, and so on. Only the unkowing would shell out money for that because to them, such things are mystical magic tricks.

I'm all for giving money to the people who create something i really enjoy, but this idea is complete nonsense.

No I would not pay for ultimate graphics. If I bought a über gaming pc I expect games to deliver the best graphics without having to pay for it. Paying for graphics is money grabbing.

If you paid for ultimate graphics... i'll give you that, because you'd have to run a MONSTER system with the way things are looking... *goes back to playing Planetside 2*

I don't know if I would have that much of a problem with it, except that this game is meant to last a while, and there will probably be a time where a low-medium computer can run it on ultimate graphics, but they wouldn't want to because they can only afford a low quality computer. It's a good idea but has too many flaws.

Well it would pretty much be a tax solely on Nvidia owners.
Given how closely they've worked to optimise this on Nvidia cards it seems unlikely.
No AMD card owner would pay for that.

I REALLY would like a PROPER clarification of how this model works though.

No, that would not be worth $5-$10 the way it is right now. If instead they make the free textures a blurry N64-esque mess to get people to buy the high res textures, then that will just generate a lot of backlash from the community.

I'd pay 10 bucks to see something that could melt a pair of 680s. Not sure what the point would be for less than that - the game already looks very nice.

Exactly. Taking money for such a basic thing in a "free 2 play" game is just cheap. I hate it when other companies do something like that.

Money should only be spent on additional stuff.

you gotta pay to have a machine ,that could run the ultimate graphics first, and with so many people with old machines, trying to play planetside 2,the devs are wasting time and money on obsolete machines

I doubt this will ever happen but I do not see much wrong with it IF this is only a total "ultra" setting. So that like only the upper 1% of players can actually run this with playable FPS.
A modern game should always look awesome on a modern PC. But there are always some graphical features that the 99% cannot use without FPS tanking to abysmal depths.
When it takes additional work to get those effects into the game and only a few percentage can actually display them, I don't see much wrong with charging for them. As long as the game looks gorgeous even without it. If it's work time and effort that could have been put into other areas I don't see much hurt in charging for something that only a very small fraction of players need/request.
But then it's doubtfull if the effort is worth it at all. And this might be the reason why we will never see this. And this might be a good thing ;)

(This is of course concerning a F2P title)
