How big?

How big is planetside? i'm talking to dev's here or someone who would actually know the actual things about the offical game. how big, talking computer space, is planetside going to be. if it's so massive will there be like 10 cd's to install the game? if it is going to require a lot of cd's, i'd really like to see games released on dvd's. i have a dvd-rom in my computer and i'd really like it if games could be put out on 1 dvd disc instead of like 3-4 cd's.

and do dvd's have faster read times? if so then that'd be cool to install a game faster than normal, or is that just how fast your hard drive can write the information?

there is no game that i have seen have 10 CDs everquest is more then 10 CDs cuz they have add ons..

but planetside is 3 CDs

ok, well i think they should put games on dvd instead, then it would only be 1 dvd. maybe they could have it on both, just more convenient i think to put in 1 and it does everything, ut2003 had 3 cd's and it took forever to install.

I think they should have it on DVD also. I know everyone doesn't have dvd drives so they should release it with 2 versions. One is CD and the other DVD and have the box clearly labled ^_^ And all you people who don't have dvd drives go get them :p

the cost for doing a dual release like that would be huge, not to mention most retailers wouldn't stock the dvd version

Actually DVD games would be a great idea. I dont see any reason a store wouldnt stock them. Its not like stores refused to stock CD's when data first went from floppies to cd. A DVD should be able to hold all 3 cds worth, and depending on how many request it, could yeild a large profit for sony. Correct me if im wrong, but didnt sony just come out with the blue laser discs?

You don't realize how little room a retailer can dedicate to stocking a specific piece of software, plus having a dvd and a cd release might confuse the average buyer, until dvd ownership gets to the point of cd rom owndership and the price to put a game on 5 cd's, plus the packaging outweighs the costs of publishing on dvd, only then will you see dvd games released. Microsoft tried, when dvd's first came out, a release of their encarda (sp?) encyclopedia software on dvd and it didn't sell well.

well even if stores didn't stock many of the dvd style, i order most games from amazon.com, and i do remember seeing, i think it was baulders gate 2 on dvd when computers started coming with dvd-rom, then they could have more high quality fmv or in game video's if they don't use fmv any more. couldn't they? or maybe they could bundle games with a free movie! i can just see it now

the dvd game thing has been done before, I remember baulders gate and myst on dvd. It was more expensive and not everyone had the drives to support it. Now that a dvd player is really common in most households not to many people even use the dvd-rom in their computer for anything that a normal cdrom cant do. It is a good idea but its going to require alot of people to get a dvdrom.
