View Full Version : Why have a tournament with an unfinished product?

Not sure if this has been brought up but with SOE live a few weeks away I have to ask why SOE is having this big tournament with cash prizes for a game that is not even out of beta yet?

I'm going to have to guess for publicity.

Because why not?

Thanks for that Basti :P

I can see the marketing/publicity being a really good thing. But it still seems that a contest for cash on an unfinished game is a bit risky. Unless they plan to have a lot of things fixed in two weeks? Perhaps this is the next milestone?

It's still not SOE.

Is someone else running it? I'm not following?

It sure is SOE's event, it is named after them. Even if another company of group was actually organizing it, SOE is promoting it.

Miir I thought the same thing. Id expect some kind of announcement at SOE live, I'm hoping the next beta build. We still haven't touched over half the weapons in the game

Damnit your signature will give me nightmares someday!

I kinda agree with you, can't see the point doing a ''challenge''
with an unfinished game

Why is it a problem if they run a challenge with the game as is? Yeah, it's not finished. I don't see this as an issue.

First, you have to answer. Why not?

As long as they don't focus too much attention on esports with 6v6 or 12v12 matches all the power to them.

Ok... mind you these are my opinions.

If I wanted my game to be taken seriously on the eSports/competitive scene I would likely want any event to have some legitimacy. Having an unfinished product takes away from that legitimacy by allowing current game issues to potentially affect the outcome of the competition. Since there is money involved people are going to be even more concerned that they are really getting a fair chance to win. That's why I would not do it on an unfinished product.

In the end it is their money and their reputation on the line not mine.

I was just surprised no one has brought this up yet.

Quite sure, before football was "Finished" they had games.

I just got back and yes it is sponsored by someone else. I'm sure the sponsor approached SOE, but either way, I'm just ribbing you on a technicality. It does seem a bit strange, but hey, this is the biggest thing SOE has ever done and if a sponsor wants to come in and have a crazy contest with $10k in prizes, awesome! All the hype around PS2's development is great news.

SOE built the rules, they are essentially running it regardless of who the sponsor is.

Why? Publicity bra. Plus, SOE does not have to worry about the cash prizepool. All SOE has to worry about is running the tournament. Not gonna lie, running a tourney for a game that is unfinished is pretty damn ballsy.
I got faith tho, it is gonna be fun.

I'm quite sure that the tournaments during the Starcraft 2 beta did not make it any less serious esport...

Starcraft 2 beta = marketing beta (things work)
Planetside 2 beta = real beta (things don't work)

There is a difference.

None of this matters anyways. Planetside 2 has inferior gunplay/animations/etc when its stacked against any other shooter. It's fun(ish) because its an MMO. The idea that this game could be a serious 'e-sport just because they hired some e-sports has-been to balance weapons is absurd. The tournament will be for hype, period.

This game could even be post release, and a tournament would still be a novelty, because, quite frankly, this game's gunplay is still kind of ass, and the MMO nature makes hit detection and weapons feel retarted.

Why not have a tournament? PS2 fans are going to show up to SOE Live regardless, so why not give them something exciting to do?

And yes the tournament was created and is sponsored by us.

What's all this talk of e-sports?

Is this something Sony will be taking seriously for Planetside2?
