I've been seeing a lot of feedback about the the game as it stands. Many people have commented that the beta we're involved in now won't change drastically after it launches.
I'm curious to your opinions.
My take on it is everything in the game that can be modified by updating the corresponding excel file (stats, numbers, cooldown lengths and the like) are up for grabs.
Where as the more, "Tangible" parts are fairly set in stone (Textures, models, sound effects etc)
I think the majority of us are forgetting the biggest change post-launch.
The population.
Many questions and worries, imo, will be answered once we have a full server with a growing playerbase.
For instance, someone was commenting about the lack of logistics. At the moment it's easy to see that most of the battles are focused around the main bases with skirmishes quickly being overrun when a zerg hits a sparsely defended area. This mean's people are just hot-spotting into areas with enemies.
Once we have full pops on servers, along with the upcoming pop caps, we should see each faction pushing on at least two fronts with coordinated maneuvers and support roles.

I can only answer your question in the title, as the rest of your post...
No one really knows how close it is. Though I would guess about 3-4months away from final release. Though that's not to say it will be "complete".
EDIT: disregard my first sentence, as I see you now fixed your post

There is a lot of work to do even in creating the other continents.
On top of that we haven't seen the meta-game yet, and it's promised to come.
So, 6-12 months for those?
Also, the devs have said that the game will keep on being developed, so 'never' is one answer.
I'm concerned it will be pushed out too soon, SOE style. The Alpha Squad promotion was released not too long ago and it says this in fine print:
** You will be charged immediately for the Alpha Squad package, and upon purchase, you will have instant Beta access and 4000 Station Cash credited to your Station Account. You will receive the rest of the items in the Alpha Squad package upon launch of PlanetSide 2, on or before December 31, 2012.
That could just mean they'll release another set of items and such while still in beta.
The nice thing about a game like PS2 is that it will never be "finished"

if they are launching amerish i'd say probably 2 more months at least before actual release. they are just now opening up the infantry guns to testing with esamir this weekend. i think they were also planning to have amerish at launch. my best guess is more than likely this will be a December launch.

.....gotta think they'd like to launch it in time to CA$H-IN on a lions share of the Christmas holiday purchase pie.
.....how much they expect to make on the subscription side and other ca$h-driven components of this FREE-to-play model of PS2 is something only $ony knows. If $ony smells money, the pre$$ure will be on to release it...before gameplay is realistically optimized.

The christmas cash in wont really affect a game like Planetside, since what the christmas cash in is when people buy gifts, and you wont need to buy the main game

I hope they keep updating the game post-launch since there's a lot of work to do still.
Consider World of Tanks, they're at update 0.8.0 now, they're officially not even in the 1.0 version after years of playing out of beta... :x

I'm pretty sure they explicitly said they were releasing it this year. I think Smedley even said the december 31 on the alpha squad description was here because the legal departement wanted to have a set date here but that SOE intended to release the game sooner.
Taking into account the amount of work that will be needed to get Esamir right -both bug and balance wise-, balance heavy weapons for HAs once they're out, get the mission sytem in game and the lunar phase I'd say we're looking at over a month of hard work if not two.

Planet-side 2 is still in closed Beta so about 45%

I really hope this is not how it's going to look like at launch (graphic wise). Textures look shabby and there's this overall blurryness to everything.

I'd put my money on a December 2012 launch.
Any features that are not ready at that point will most likely be cut and added to the post-launch schedule.
SOE needs a fresh new product to generate revenue. EQ Next does not seem to be anywhere close to completion, and the rest of the SOE line-up is ageing rapidly.

It's not really closed anymore, anyone willing to get in can do it pretty easily.
I would say they need at least 6 month to polish the game and release a minimum of 5 conts. Thats the point where the launch should take place. Nevertheless i am sure they will release an unfinished game ( 2 or at the best 3 conts) still this year.

Honestly years.
The game needs some major changes.

People today seem to think a game has to be perfect before it's released. Lets just keep the game in beta, pull a Duke Nukem Forever and rebuild the game from scratch when the engine becomes dated. The only thing this game needs before launch are the three promised continents, and no game-breaking bugs. Everything else can come after release.
This game is going the soft-launch route. Anyone who has had any interest in the game has already had a chance to play it. These awful bugs that people like to blame for sharp declines in population after MMO releases aren't going to exist in PS2 because they already occurred (in beta). People have already made their opinions of the game (regardless of the 'beta' label) and have either quit or continue to play beta.
I'm sure SoE likes to think there's going to be a giant influx of players when the game finally does get released, but unless there's a huge marketing campaign, that's not going to happen. I'll do my part and tell everyone I know about it, but it's not going to be like most MMOs where the majority of first impressions come on the launch date.

I honestly doubt it will be that long before release. The typical armchair developers will say it isn't ready.. but when is a game really ready for release especially an MMO.

I'm honestly not worried about the texture quality(just make sure you play the game in High or Ultra..yeah I've played Crysis and Gears of War in max setting before. And seen enough of Skyrim texture packs) and blurryness(have seen dozens of PS2 footages..in some of them the graphics was very crisp and detailed without fog) that much.
And well... to capiqu, Mox, and The Kush... great wishful thinkings there.

The game runs better on high than it does on medium/low so it isn't something to worry about :D

So many MMOs take a year or more after release to really come into their own. It takes more than internal Alpha and a few months of beta to fine tune a game this complex.
I'm not worried. I have SO much fun in the game already. All I need is my outfit, a microphone and mumble and I have more fun than I've had since PS1.
I already get the only thing I really cared about from PS1. Huge coordinated operations. My outfit already fields a full platoon on raid nights and it feels just like PS1.
Planetside took years to get to where it needed to be.
I'm willing to stick with this game for the whole ride.
