So I'm guessing the servers will be in California. I live in New Hampshire. Ping plays a pretty big role in how well you can perform in an FPS. I'm currently playing MOHAA and there's a big difference between playing on a dedicated server that's located in Boston and one that's located in Cali. I ping Boston servers at about 20-40 and Cali servers at around 100. Am I going to have a problem with ping where I am? Or are the servers going to be higher quality or something so that people with broadband in far away places can compete with people that live next door to the server?

Anyone in beta that lives in New England that can tell me their avg ping?

Planned Servers:

US West
US Central
US East
London
Asia (unknown location. I've heard a lot of places are being considered. I'd put my money on Taiwan or South Korea)

I didn't forget it. I had not idea about it. Would be nice to see a server for western Europe in the land of constant munchies. (wouldn't mind being the tech sent out there to do the server updated either)

From what I understand besides the 3 US ones any other servers will be opened in the future and will not yet available when the game is released.

I dont whant to many servers here in Europe, cause then they will not have so many players on them, maby 1-2 servers here in Europe...

didnt they say it works with 56k? if so then high pings woudnt be a problem, and 100 isnt even high.

Although it varies from game to game, ping variation is usually pretty noticable even below 150. In UT2k3, I can definately tell the difference between pings of 30 and 100.

but they are making a good net code, in americas army poeple have pings around 200 and the game barly has any lag, and no warp! but i think sony can and is and will do better.

Playing against someone who pings 20 or even 50 with a ping of 100 or more is a huge disadvantage in other FPS games, ie q3, ut2k3 and to a lesser degree, counterstrike. With servers holding 1000s of players, ping is a valid concern.

Ping is obviously one of their primary concerns. I wouldn't worry about it.

As long as the server is fast and I have round 100 ping, I can live. 200 I cant aim well, and 300-500, I'll just fly and persue for no damn reason.:D

.....or hack....whichever one calls.

Netcode is way different here. They have to minimize it even more because of the MMO aspect.

I would just say don't worry about it.

ATM I'm playing with dial up on counter-strike and jeez it can suck sometimes. Coming around a corner and firing the first shots and getting 2 hits to his 5.

Anyways I'm guessing that net code is a huge area of concern for the developers. They will look for a way to generate the most profit possible and making dial up feasible would have to be a must.

I'm getting cable tomorrow though so no worries here.:)

We would have cable.....tho our road doesn't get it.....

Or we would have a satilite connection, but the trees are in da way.

Or we would have DSL......but my mom doesn't wana pay 39 bucks for it.....even tho she would pay $39 for cable or satilite......now whats wrong with this?

Make it even better, she bought like $300 worth of stuff on Sunday, you know where that money could be right now?

well when i play jedi knight 2 i get around 200-300 ping for the other Australian servers (wich is really good) and i only og t a 56k, but with you dumb yanky serverse, and all you high tech american gizmos on the other side of the world, the ping is around >500 so its hard, but with my new computer (soon) and a broad band things should be better right?

You're better off being on the Asian sever SlapNut, unless you want to talk with your fellow players, then a high speed internet is the best way to go.

And I can still dominate the score in JK2 with a 240 ping

Or we would have a satilite connection, but the trees are in da way.

Satellite internet is REALLY REALLY bad for games in general, and twitch games in particular. Even if you can get a 2-way satellite feed (lots of satellite systems use a landline for outgoing, and the dish for incoming), Information from the server/your reaction to it has to transverse 92,000 miles of space, in addition to all the hardware (landlines to the server, switchers, routers, etc) that a normal signal has to face.

92,000 miles (4 trips of 23,000 miles each to a geosynchronous orbiting satellite) is, even at lightspeed, a half a second. You may as well transmit the "I'm dead" packet along with your attempt to shoot at the enemy you just got on screen.

BUGGER
2003-03-25, 05:45 PM
It would be faster than 56k atleast.....unless the server is running really really fast.

I don't even know if they're allowed to post this kind of information, but it's worth a shot anyway.

What kind of ping times are the beta-testers looking at right now (with their own connection speeds)? :brow:

Dragon

Proximity to the server matters just as much as your connection speed. That is why they are having an east/west server at launch.

Hopefully open beta will give us a better sense of pings.

With servers on each coast I think the pings will be very stable, but who knows.

Transmission of information over satellite is nice and fast...satellite internet is great for web browsing, DLing mp3s, beta files, warez, movies, pictures, sound files, etc, etc, etc...

But the transmission rate of information in a twitch game is completely unimportant when it takes a half second for information from the server to reach you, and for you to respond to it (that, on top of normal human reaction time, and satellite signals pass through pretty much the same gateways as regular internet signals do, so normal lag will be there as well). Bad bad bad.

Hey Mikky, where does your information about the servers come from ?
(US east, US west and London at first then others . .)

---Beta Testerthis isnt Q3 or Cs guys, ping isnt nearly as dependant, its instant shot delayed dmg, but its nearly the same damage time with 50-200 ping. i avg about a 110 ping with my cable, most people are around 50-200, which is fine, so gtfo! :D

I was wondering about the Mosquito.

Do the controls feel 'sluggish'? There was a beta tester who shall remain nameless that said the air vehicle controls felt 'sluggish', but he did not elaborate. I am interested in finding out if that means A) they're sluggish, or B) he's a pussy / bad pilot.
