View Full Version : Opinions on PS2

What are your opinions on it? By this I mean, does it feel like the gun-play is taken away by all the vehicles, is there a nice mix between gun-play and vehicle fighting, does fighting in vehicles work well? and so on. Also, what about the optimization in this game, especially since there are like 50+ people playing in 1 game at the same time. I expect this to be especially laggy for many people.
I think its heading in the right direction, even in its current state it is a lot of fun, both infintry and vehicle combat is a blast (pun intended). 50 people is considered a fairly small battle, as far as the lag. that really isnt that bad. it pretty much depends on your system and they are making improvements all the time.

People need to give it more time still in my opinion. They seem to drift here and there but thankfully they listen to the community and get back on track.
I like the game a lot so far. My only issue with it has been network lag. Sometimes the characters and vehicles kind of stutter around. There are also some faction balance issues. Other than that it is good fun :)

I think there's a really good mix of infantry and vehicle gameplay. Many objectives to be taken require being done on foot, so there is a lot of potential for infantry fighting. And a lot of the time, there are some really good vehicle battles to get to the objective base between the defenders and the attackers. And I personally haven't lagged much. Every once in a while, it gets a bit choppy at times, but that's a rarity.

I think I'll check back in a few weeks. I'd help test the game but everything is locked and everyone but the NC is sitting in their warpgates.
I'm not going to sugar coat it. I hate the direction this game is going. Can't even call it Planetside, really. Sure, it shares names and colors from Planetside. But, that's pretty much where the line is. I'm like a broken record now, but this is BF3 on steroids. Base designs are unimaginative and wide open, TTK is way too fast, you have to waste cert points unlocking attachments... I can go on, and on, and on... but, I've written this same thing 100 times over.
I hope they fix this game. There's way too many generic FPS on the market. The only cool things it has going for it at the moment is large continents with more people.
I might as well tack on my copy/paste list of suggested improvements, if they even read these threads/forums anymore;
-PS1 Bases (EXPONENTIALLY better)
-Slow down TTK
-Tracers and better hipfire by default
-Vehicle E/E animations
-Holstering weapons (don't care if you can see it on your back or not)
-Nerf rocket explosive to infantry, it's like damn 64 man Metro again. But with 2000 people.
-SAAAANNCTUARIIIIEEES
-Lattice system
Yeah, I know. It sounds like I want that HD remake of PS1. I pretty much do. :/

It runs like absolute shit (5 - 15 fps) in battles, the character advancement needs work, but I keep playing it anyway... I don't want to be person who gives up. I like a lot of things about it.

Well it's obviously not finished but I like it a lot so far.
I have a new but mid-range PC and I have never had any framerate issues, even in huge battles. Occasionally someone is lagging and warping around like crazy but it's pretty rare.

I loved Planetside. Probably my favourite game of all time. But I have to agree with Zulthus: PS2 doesn't really feel like Planetside at all right now.
So far, I just don't enjoy it - but I'm having a hard time pinning down exactly why. For some reason it just doesn't grab me at all, and so I don't end up playing it.
My main criticisms are that the TTK is far too fast for a game where you spend so much time getting into position, and that tank drivers having the main gun removes one of my favourite features of PS1. Also the game really needs to make it easier to tell friend from foe, as currently it can be very hard.
I think I'll check back in a few weeks. I'd help test the game but everything is locked and everyone but the NC is sitting in their warpgates.

It was horrible in alpha to the point I wondered why people liked it at E3. However the game has come a long way since and a lot of things I complained about have now been sorted which is nice. It's going the right direction and SOE have proved with this long beta that they are listening and they might have finally learnt from all their other MMOs they've ruined.
The game is almost ready to be released from what I've played. Most the things I have a problem with can be fixed within a day...
- UI needs cleaning up, I'd love to see text under the main icons when you hit esc.
- Need more graphical options like to remove fog, AA, turn off bloom and blur.
- Aircrafts need keyboard only flight like BF3.
- Camera needs to follow the aircraft in third person mode instead of staying stuck.
- Friendlys need to take less damage from vehicles as it puts engs off from repairing.
- Need to sort out who you capture bases, it seems rather messy atm where people just run in and camp the spawn tubes. I still don't understand why the enemy can keep spawning there when the base changed to your colour.
- Want to be able to equip a knife
- You should have to use the warp gate rather than the terminal.
- Ground vehicles need handbrakes
- enclose the bases more so they're easier to defend (will take a bit longer to do)
- Hardcore servers without the triangles on enemies because I find them cheap.
- Having ammo and healing pads in bases instead of running to the terminals all the time and hitting resupply. This could be in the game, I dunno but I haven't found one.
I just have little niggles really but the game is really fun to play.

I agree and it doesn't help that the flags change colour when you get close to them, you're thinking you're flying to an enemy base and suddenly oh look they changed to your colour.
I don't like how the points are green even when you own them, Green should be neutral and if you own the point it should be your teams colour.

totally agree with zulthus's post, especially the bases/lattice system and of course TTK on everything.. 3 shotting a tank in less than 20 seconds is a bit daft.

There's things I like and things I don't ....
I agree with much of Zulthus' post, but I'm not going to ask for class system to be removed - I don't think they'll consider it.
But ... PS1 was a better game overall, even though this one is improving week by week with the help of the players input especially.
I have to agree with most of you guys, this game should not be called planetside, because its nothing like planetside 1.
1. As stated before, ammo and health issues. Im spending certs on things that are basic soldier abilitys. (Just so I cant throw my grenade harder cost certs).
2. Why do we have BR, Its useless, Just make implants cert based. In Planetside 1, BR and CR ment somthing, it was like a promotion.
3. XP pay out for defending and taking a base, was worth staying the fight and taking down that base. Now its not even worth it, just let them take it and come back for it later.
4. Resources, OMG dont get me started, just to slow, spend the 40 bucks (American) and purchase the damn alpha packet. If its true ill do the 14 bucks a month. Dont need cammo just need to be able to drop a TR or NC with a couple of shots.
Last but not lease, the feel for PS1 is there, taking the base, large scale battles, working as units to accomplish a mission. But this is not my PS1 I loved. Actually I think they should call it, Forever War, or Global take over, or 3 way fight, or they can call it, "I just put fifty rounds in your back and you just turned around and two shot me" .... wait that may not fit. Any who, the game is alot of fun but its no planetside. :groovy:

I am really enjoying PS2. I love the huge battles. The ttk seems right to me since I dont have any certs in armor I die pretty fast. The gunplay feels great right now. I love the sounds of battle, when you have a hundred guys shooting at each other its awesome. The only thing I want to see is an equipped knife. I want to see that bad boy as I go to shank someone.

There's so much I like about this game, even in it's beta:
- epic scale of the game. I really want to feel part of something bigger, and PS2 succeeds in that. I feel like a traitor if I decide to run with TR or VS now.
- Indar - awesome yet believable scenery. And this is from someone who has played Firefall a lot, where the scenery is awesome but not believable. The jury's out on esamir, though.
- the hex system makes it feel as if I am playing a complex board game as well as an FPS. Love the subtle complexities of this, especially on Indar. Again, the jury's out on Esamir; having less but larger bases seems to me a bit dumbed down.
- Infantry fighting is good; been in some epic firefights. TTK is spot on, IMO; not instadeath, but short enough for you to get the kill if you flank and get someone in your sights. Over long TTK is one of the things that I dislike about Firefall PvP, just becomes all about twitch skills and not much else. Particularly like heavy assault; even managed to blow up a few tanks.
- Vehicle fighting. Not really a habitual tank driver or pilot so will not comment. I do like blowing planes out of the sky with the AA guns though - yes I'm one of those irritating noobs (just wait until I get the Lightning Skyguard and lock on rocket launcher).
Things that need work:
- the resource system is pretty broken. Some suggestions
-- Allow resources be earned across the world, not just from the continent that you are on. Will give warpgate camped factions a reason and the resources to break out.
-- Allow Auraxium to be earned by actions, not just from territory. Get Auraxium for making kills, assists, blowing up tanks etc. Retain Auraxium from territory, otherwise what is the point of conquering territory.
-- Allow the other resources also to be earned from blowing stuff up. Eg polymer from a Lightning.
-- Balance the XP gain so that the more hexes a base controls, the more XP you earn. At the moment, you get 500XP for gaining control of a tiny 1 hex base on Indar, and the same for a 10 hex base on Egasir. Make it 100XP per hex.
-- introduce meaningful resource bonuses for low population empires. They are derisory as they stand.
--- Edit - make it feel as if the resourtces are worth having. At the moment, there,s nothing in the UI that says that my Lightning or whatever is going to use anything other than Auraxium (or if there is, I haven't spotted it). There's no link.

I can only play for an hour or so before I get pissed off and log. Basically there's only two moments from the past week that I have actually enjoyed.
1. Assaulting a biolab, because I can just sit in a teleporter room and camp dudes
2. Camping the one spot on Esamir where everyone spawns after getting bounced from a poplocked Indar on login. I don't know, it made me laugh.
That makes me sound like a douchebag that only likes to camp people, but that's the only fun I have in this game and the only time I can consistently get kills, because most of the time I'm getting farmed on Esamir.
The resource system is just idiotic and I don't understand how anyone could ever think that this current system made sense in any way. Let's see...in order to assault a continent we don't own, we have to hope that the entire empire can somehow save up vehicles for one big push to gain territory, because if that fails, we're footzerging. You can't go back to the old continent to get resources because it's poplocked as soon as you leave it. You are just completely stuck on the new continent getting farmed at the warpgate.
And now that faction that cont locks Esamir about 80% of the time -- they've already bought all the big deadly weapons like rocket pods, HE turrets, SKEP launchers, dual Burster, and Skyguard (while you have 4k Aux from multiple days of fighting and still can't buy anything) so they are even more lethal and effective at keeping you in the warpgate. What is the incentive for them to leave, and what is the incentive for you to go there? There is none. So once Indar gets poplocked, there is no reason for TR or VS to play this game.

Couldn't agree more Z, DARK use to be very active for years in Planetside with hardcore players right up until the PS2 beta launched, now it seems like its a battle to get 5 people online, alot of them played a few times then stopped playing in frustration. The devs seriously need to look VERY closely at Planetside 1 and incorporate more into PS2. I know a few can't stand the current UI for the game. For myself I can't stand the Battlefield feeling to it, which is almost everything in the game right now. Don't get me wrong the game is coming along nicely, but still needs alot of changes to be worthy of the name Planetside. Another thing is Esamir...i was hoping for alot more and it just turned out to be another 3 way square and very barren and boring continent...Wheres our blizzard like snow, ruins from past battles from years of fighting, also haven't seen too much water or ice, but hey we have fog.
Where's our alamo epic base battles? Hopefully the next few patches will make some good changes to the game.

I'm enjoying it so far, and it's been very interesting (and promising) watching all the changes in gameplay as new things are added and existing things are changed.
I'd say it's very difficult to make a judgement currently on "what the game will play like", because my own play experience has changed significantly a few times in the last 4 weeks. And will most likely changed a few times more before release.
I'm very optimistic. Considering that I'm beyond awful as an infantry player, that must mean something :D

I havnt got in to play PS 2 yet but after reading these forums for the past few months i aint really bothered, its a damn shame. The quote above makes it sound like it`ll be pay to win, the devs said it wouldn`t at all but thats just a small drop in the ocean.
It would of been interesting if this thread was called `Is PS 2 better than PS 1?` ...could imagine what the response would be. In this day and age it should be tons better! but it like seems like they took out some of planetsides best features (apart from massive warfare) and replaced it with a hollow shell.

Thats exactly what they did to appeal to all the twitch kiddies out there, but i hope they change it some with more planetside 1 features in the near future.

One thing I would like to see is the ability to carry more ammunition for the rocket launcher on the heavy assault class. After the buff to tank armor I feel like if I'm gonna take out more than just one tank I need an engineer tagging along. Which is fine, I enjoy teamwork but I would like to see the option to cert more ammunition. Maybe it's just me.

What are your opinions on it?
Before you ever, ever ask this, keep in mind you will generally get 2 sorts of responses:
1. PS1 veterans: They seem to hate it or at least the ones that do are insanely vocal about it. Main reason: PS2 is not enough PS1.
2. Newcomers: Lots of them from a COD/BF3 background but generally, this group has an easier time to judge this game on its merits.
PS1 veterans seem to have their frustrations mainly about seeing their favorite deep game from the past to become "dumbed down to COD/BF3 level".
Newcomers generally seem to have a harder time with the lack of continuous action and relatively slow progress.
What everybody likes about this game though, veterans and newcomers alike, is these epic battles when they occur :-)
