Nice SOE Live coverage, including a heads-up to PSU/Hamma from LevelCap.

This guy is a highly recommended YouTuber btw. He's big in the BF3 community for a reason but expect lots of great PS2 videos from him as well: He 's good at the games he's playing but even better at analyzing them on his YouTube channel.

Seems like a pretty cool guy, will have to subscribe :)

I'll admit though... his explaination of the tournament at SOE Live almost made me shed a tear, lol

"I even spent some time driving Sunderers back into the combat, just so i could immediately spawn in and um... fight guys"

That's new school aright.

He talks about more love for casual players. Wtf? The game is already too much softwashed.

I'm a bit worried about this preoccupation with casual players. Does anyone have the following info?

How long do casual players play one game before moving onto another game?

What defines casual?

Is the industry itself excited about casual players? (if this is so it hints at a fad)

I actually agree with his point on making it a bit more casual friendly. Even as a hardcore player, you'll want to do some mindless solo running and gunning from time to time if you have an hour to spare. PS2 should therefore cater this play style as well.

Not really, people are already quitting because they don't know what to do. YouTube has plenty of evidence.

TUTORIAL PROBLEM!
That's entirely a tutorial problem!

I'm not against 'casuals' or mindless killing. I'm just worried that we might be chasing ghosts.

I agree, it's a bit overwhelming at first. The menus especially, what base means what, the guns and their differences, all of the implants etc. I have no problem learning them, but I can see where it would be a turn off to a new, virgin planetside player.

The devs have to think and look at some of these things as a teenage outsider, lol. It's hard to do sometimes, but necessary.

That is not to say that we can't have customization capabilities because the devs are afraid it would be, "too complicated." Dare I say they just haven't figured out a way to make and incorporate these things in a simpler manner? It's definitely possible without making the game even more shallower.

Oh know.

Tutorials are what's needed for casuals as well as a fully fleshed mission system.

I agree.
We need good tutorials, a mission system, a pimped up map and last but not least a mechanic leading the players/zerg to the fight (IMO we need a lattice therefore)

All these issues have nothing to do with more love for casual players. The game itself needs more love.

totally agree with you. atm it is just a battlefield with biggers maps and more players... gets bored after a while because you have no targets.

would love to see
- more conts
- poplocks
- a map that works (for teamplayers atm it is the worst thing)
- training zone for weapon testing
- lattice system that works

I still don't get why they did not use the concept from PS1 for PS2 and why they made a Battlefield 4 instead :(

Because the guys at SOE are simple minded. They think:
Ps1 was not so successfull therefore the ps1 mechanics must be shit.
On the other hand bf3 was sucessful therefore the bf3 mechanics must be good.

:rofl::huh::rofl:

Check Hamma's interview with Higby (http://www.planetside-universe.com/showthread.php?t=49303) at the 8:45 mark. They have specific reasons for not making this another PS1.

^ That's the part where he says they have to make many small conflicts spread across the map right? So size matters sometimes, not always, right? . So they are redefining the MMOFPS genre by making it so there many small battles across a single map instead of a couple of large battles with a splattering of small battles elsewhere.

That's doesn't spell MMOFPS to me. I suppose when they get to the part where we have continent locking this may change. I just don't see how it would work otherwise. In the end, I think all this debating about this comes down to SOE just not sharing with the players what they are trying to achieve with the game.

2,000 people sitting on Zurvan or the Crown won't work.

That spells crashing not MMOFPS.

You know as well as I do that the entire population on a map wouldn't typically sit at the same exact location. This is especially true for PS2 since the travel distances are not that far and the terrain directs you on the ground. There defiantly should be multiple attack vectors. Isn't that what the entire hex vs. lattice discussion revolves around?

EDIT: Anyways, they still do plan to put continent locking in as far as I know. With each empire having a single foothold on one continent, correct? Guess we'll have to see how it plays out when they get to that point. I'm just still confused how it will work exactly without some sort of link system.

They don't need to make the game dumber (Hello Call of Duty), they need to make the players smarter (Hello tutorial / help).

If they get the impression people find their game too "complex" just because they don't have the time to implement proper information / documentation, well, then maybe exactly that "release-now-pressure" and not having any time is the problem, and not the concept itself.

Yea Matt has mentioned continent locking.
