View Full Version : The Reverse Maneuver

So I made this video demonstrating a maneuver I discovered in tech test, slipped my mind to throw it PSU's way.
Reverse Highlights - YouTube
Sorry about the terrible quality, I have a terrible upload rate and low patience when it comes to uploading.
Bear in mind this is possible with ESF's, not exclusively the reaver.

That was absolutely beautiful. It's like the power sliding in PS1 without having to warp to accomplish it.

As someone who is trying to learn the ropes of piloting in this game, I've got to ask how you are pulling this off?
From the looks of it, you're up-thrusting durning a near ninety degree roll while lifting or dipping the nose...

Your pitch control outmuscles your yaw control by almost 5-to-1 in a stock ESF. Your fastest way about is always hard pitch. Downward lateral thrust will help maintain airspeed during the snap.

...Bwah?
...That sounds like a fast way to flip and reverse but, considering I'm not up to rolling over, also a good way to crash as well...
As someone who mostly focuses on ground targets, I was more interested in the sliding bank.

You can do it from any orientation. Down thrust is relative to your wing axis. If you don't want to lose altitude, snap roll 90 first.

Reminds me of Vipers doing that in BSG.

I need to try this in a Galaxy. :p

Thanks guys :)
You can do it in a gal, just without much speed. A lib you ruin the momentum the moment you hit AB because for some reason it shoots you forward regardless of your thruster direction.
Not gonna give it away just yet, making a tutorial video but I will say that your descend button has absolutely nothing to do with this maneuver.

I'm guessing that there are a lot of certs put into vertical thrust... Maybe, lol, I have no idea.

I can't seem to pull it off in the Scythe. At least the flying backwards part. I think the nature of the Scythe makes it kill nearly all momentum as you change direction. Maybe I am doing it wrong? However rolling 90 degrees then diving while hitting the vertical thrust will turn you around 180 degrees real quick.

I can't fly to save my life. I think i need to adjust the sensitivity on my mouse, i have to roll it for miles to just make a 90 degree turn.

Afraid you are indeed doing it wrong, scythes do it fine.

That's pretty awesome dude, nicely done.
I can't fly worth a crap. I wanna get a joystick but I'm afraid it won't work
properly because of all the moaning I hear about joysticks not working properly.

If you bind look up and look down, you won't ever want a joystick.

Largely fixed. Enough that I've finally swapped over, anyway, and I'm probably the token purist.

Any advice hot to pull that off with mouse+keyboard?

See signature link, replace left-to-right movement with up-to down. :)
The flow would go something like this:
1. Mouse left until your wingtip points to the ground.
2. Hold left control.
3. Drag the mouse downwards as fast as you can.
You may need to fuck with your sensitivity and/or input DPI for this to be practical. Also, all directions assume inverted Y axes.

I'll say again, bind look up and look down and your signature video does not happen.

Correct, it doesn't - then you merely don't have analog control anymore. I'm sure that's fine for a lot of people.

You use the key for steady movement without running out of mousepad then you aim with your mouse. You get to retain the precision of a mouse, I don't really see how a joystick could ever match the accuracy you get from aiming with a mouse.

I know you don't, and I'm not trying to convince you otherwise.
As for having to use two different input mechanisms to get the same motion out of the craft - I think that speaks for itself.

This is so easy to do in a Mossie with m&b. I used to do it accidentally all the time while trying to turn around in a dogfight. Unfortunately, I've never bothered with the ground attack buttons. I would describe how, but then someone who actually does it will say I've described it wrong.

This is exactly how I figured it out, by accident :)
Tutorial aside just try pulling down with no forward momentum doing flips/180s while holding vert thrust, easiest if you roll 35-90 degrees on your side. Once you feel the momentum going back you hit afterburn. From there it is just learning to use it on demand and applying it to different situations.

I got owned by this maneuver today and even though I had just pulled my aircraft, I had nothing but respect. I tried to afterburner past him but could not get out of the crosshairs. It looks pretty sick from the recieving end too :).

I really can't see how using afterburners to go in reverse is an intended mechanic of the flight physics in this game.
I mean come on just look at it, it looks so funky.

Oh alright, that's cool.
I must have totally overlooked the ESFs having rotors.
My mistake...

It's not the afterburners, it's the vertical thrusters. That what it looks like to me anyways, I could be wrong. :)

Regardless, it's goofy as hell and I would venture to say not intended to work like that...
maradine

Why's it goofy? VTOLs have a much different flight envelope than traditional planes. You don't need rotors to handle like one.
