Be prepared to die...a lot.
Try out every class even if you don't think you'll like it.
Try out all 3 empires.
Join a squad/organized group
Have Fun.

I suggest you to Join a Outfit, you can play this game Alone as long there is a Fight Going on ;) They Also can tell you Stuff about the Mecanics of the Game.

THIS ! Is Exactly the Thing.New Players need People Who Explain the Game.

What's with the unnecessary capitalization of most of your comment?

My sincerest advice would be to wait for a month before starting playing the game. It's for the best I assure you...

Only thing I can offer is:

1. Don't get discouraged or overwhelmed. Things will start to make sense the longer you play.
2. Don't be afraid to experiment and more importantly, don't be afraid to die for now while learning the system.
3. Try everything out that you can, all classes, tools and vehicles and learn them.
4. The details: unfortunately, this game has a lot of them. The certs and maps were my biggest hurdle. Don't be afraid to check all of map options ON (some items are defaulted off) as it helps to understand the mess a little more. Take the time to go through the settings and experiment with game settings that are defaulted off (this helped me a lot, not just in terms of performance, but in gameplay mechanics).
5. Above all else, try to have fun, and again, don't get discouraged and be patient, the fun factor rises once you've mastered their complicated interface.
6. One last thing, don't be afraid to click things on the map. You can easily redeploy and spawn in other "hot spots" after a "few steps." Also, always look up to top left of menu screens for the infamous and not so obvious deployment or back button (lol their cumbersome interface and complicated menu system aggravates me to no end).

Two tips:
- do not feel frustrated if you die a lot: it's normal because it's sometimes a numbers game.
- Learn to flank (so you have less chances to die)

Also, there's a great forum here called "PlanetSide 2 New Player Questions". :)

Im with Sylph, youre going to die a lot, and when we say a lot... its going to be A LOT. That is the one thing that frustrates my daughter the most, who is also new.

Advice:
1. Try to stay mobile, but tactically. Situational awareness is huge due to kill speed.

2. Try to get used to the sounds you hear, and focus on where you are. Especially if you are Vanu with all the FUCKING MagRiders who WILL run you over... So, try to take in stride that you will die to vehicles on your own side, too. This was hard for me in the beginning... Im a Mag Pilot myself, so I just had to learn to STFU, its rarely intentional.

3. At first, when in battle, try to be with others, and at mid-range, while tapping your trigger for 3ish round bursts. Youll get a lot of assists, and be able to watch WTF is going on while still being useful.

All of the above really. Try out everything, join squads right away and find a good outfit and have fun. Don't feel like you have to spend money to get ahead, cert points are not too hard to come by.

Good luck soldier in the coming wars. Having a great group of people to work with will make a difference, so choose your outfit wisely.

get a group of friends or make friends as eyes are needed in the back of your head lol

have fun, thi sis a huge game with lots to see and kill so make it fun.

think tactics, think like a solider and if its red, kill it :P

join the NC :) lol ok try all factions and classes before you decide to see what suits your style of play. then go NC :)

try all vehicles incase you like one more then the others then you may decide to specialize in that one vehicle.

communicate in the /re channel. info is power and info can change the tide of battle.

- Prepare to die alot, This isn't a traditional FPS so KDR doesn't mean alot
- Try out all 3 empires before making a decision
- Always join an open squad (hit esc then click button on bottom that has like 2 people standing next to each other)
- always use a headset to hear squad info
- once you have chosen an empire go to either the Outfit recruiting section here or at the official forums and start shoping for an outfit, 70% of this game is about rolling with a group.

when you spawn at the warp gate and dont know how to find the battle, try to find a Galaxy outside and jump in. Galaxies are basecly taxis taking you to the front lines.

my simplest rule of Planetside is "If it ain't red, then make it dead!" so far this has never failed me ;)

Be prepared to give up and retreat if the base you are defending is being overwhelmed by tanks. There's nothing more likely to put you off as a newcomer than being repeatedly blasted to bits by tank shells as soon as you step out of your spawn room.

Respawn somehwere else where the odds are a bit more in your favour; the base can always be recaptured later.
