I remember reading somewhere that aircraft can not fly from island to island.
But the distance over an island is sometimes greater then the distance from one island to another. But if you can fly across continents, then why not those short areas in between continents?

The Warp Gate power radius only extends over the continents. Aircraft use that for power. So theoretically, if you get enough coconut oil, you can fly your plane over the ocean. Start saving up.

You cant cross from continent to continent with an aircraft, anywhere.

Guess there is gonna be a huge land rush when the game comes out lol, dont wanna end up with one empire having to drop pods on a island where all hostiles are.

What I meant was, there's some continents that are so close, that they are half the distance of a continent. So why can I fly across a continent, and not a shorter distance, just cause it's water?

Ok, look off my purty map.
So I can fly from point A to B. But I can't fly from A to C?

it simply has to do with load times or something. ahh i dunno.... its understandable yet kind of disappointing.

Whilst on a continent, you have unlimited fuel due to the warp gates power. Once your craft leaves the saftey of the continent, the vehicles 'power' begins to drain until there is none left and you promptly fall into the ocean and drown.

dont get too caught up in the made-up reasons why gameplay desicions are put into place.

they work like that b/c the devs designed it that way to structure a specific type of gameplay.

People have given you the real reason, I'll give you the technical:

MMOs are not hosted on one server, but rather multiple servers. Must likely, each continent is hosted seperately, which is one of the reasons they choose to break up the continents and preload all the information there. It makes the game flow better for you, and get general performance over all. :)

They way i think of it is, all the continents arent on a flat world allowing you to travel from one side to the other. Its more like they are stacked up on top of one another. If you somehow manage to keep flying when you are suppose to drop like a brick you would eventually get to the end of the world and fall. :p

Theres also technical reasons in regard to server design. It's an easy way to maintain the server structure if you limit what anyone could ever possibly see by limiting it to land areas (continents). It also means you don't have single points of redundancy; a continent can go down without effecting the entire world.

Indeed. :D

Actually, I would hope that each continent is run off more than one machine. Undoubtedly they have some method of load sharing, with several back up machines available to take up the slack when there is a sudden influx of forces to a given area.

No single computer is going to be able to handle the terrain, game code, and 600 people all fighting in a small area.

When they say the USWest Server, what that really means is a server farm of probably 40-50 individual machines.

We may actually see some server lockdowns, as some of these outfits look exceedingly organized and passionate about the game. I doubt continent lockdowns will be the only thing to worry about. :devilwink

As old as this news is it still bums me out! when i first saw the galaxy i was thinking ill get two galaxies together and pickup an AMS (which i found couldnt be carried by a gal later on :( )and find a continent with an island off of the coast, land there and set up a temporary base of operations.

Peacemaker: Be easy, dreams can come true. Acording to the map above Cyssor (Lower left) is a continent with several island portions. I'm sure an aircraft could fly out to one of them because even though it's an island it's still part of the main continent.

I don't know how you'd get an ams out there though, unless a combat engineer can build something suitable. :)
