While under my rock, I failed to notice if Steam will be downloading all the necessary files into Steamapps, or if it will be a shortcut to my SOE launchpad. Anyone know?

Iv always ran the PS2 beta under Steam as an added game. Got a few "WTF, HOW?!"s. But it's nice to see the official Steam store page. It'll make things a bit easier as well. Steam loves to remove added games from my lists time to time.

Pretty sure he said answered someone on twitter like a month ago saying they would be on Steam on day 1. The question is what you will even get for buying it on there. Some sort of starter bundle pack I imagine, and a shortcut to the launcher lol. It's on there purely for visibility really. Though I would eat my words if there was achievements or something. But I strongly doubt it uses Steam for anything but advertising.

I asked him and a few others asked on twitter this week with no responses. But I like steam for convinience. Steam overlay, etc. it's not a big deal.

Sweet, I'm a tf2 junkie and been trying to convince my friends there to try this game out upon release. This will make it easy.
Never seen it there before i´ll check it out

I have most of my games on Steam but I would not get a game like Planetside 2 on it, simple reason being that you would be waiting a week or longer to get patches/updates implemented. And this game will need updates.

The MMO's I've played on Steam have all had their patches in time. Typically, Steam just launches to the game's main client, where everyone then logs into the servers and checks for updates. In this case, I'm assuming Planetside 2 will work the same way. It will download the client files to a Steam directory, then launch via the SOE launchpad as normal. No need to avoid Steam in this case.

I wonder if they will offer a pre-load?

It will probably work like Tribes: Ascend where it opens the launcher and then you play and update the game just like now.

I didn't think they would put it on Steam. I am however very glad that they did. Many potential customers that probably would have never seen it.

this may be a newb question, but what are the advantages of d/ling from steam vs d/l off soe's site? Does it just spread out the client base better so everyone isn't d/ling from just one source?

All steam will give you is the client then you will download/patch using the client.

No, you can download the client separate if you want.

You'll probably have to start the game.

Also you can follow this link as soon as the game is unlocked on steams system steam://run/218230 (Copy into your browser)
you never know it might just work a few hours from launch and let you get a head start downloading ;)

I doubt they're going to let steam handle patching.
All I see steam being is some extra BS running in the background just so you can have an extra shortcut to Launchpad.

You are right! It's going to be worthless. Other than the millions of players on steam, the friends list functionality, the auto-driver updating, the built in VOIP, The aggregate stats, the built in wallet, the mobile steam app, the advertising.....
F'ing worthless!

I would assume Steam is just a host to launch the client software, similar to a shortcut to a non-steam game. Patching, login, store, etc are all handled by the SOE client and installed outside the Steam folder.

I'm going to initially download through steam, but if it turns out that I don't end up liking it then I will eventually just uninstall and go through SOE. Since it's a MMO and all your character data is stored on their servers then you won't lose any progression if you decide to change your mind. So I'm going to see what all Steam offers and if it's more hassle than it's worth I will change.
Just thought I would throw that out there.

I won't download through steam, just because steam adds extra load to your CPU and RAM.
I need to get the most out of my computer, so I'll just download from Sonys website instead. PS2 is all CPU..

Fight for the cause and get it on Steam. It will propel the game's ranking upwards and help to build up people's awareness.
Besides, I do not think running Steam and PS2 at the same time will be mandatory.

It is soon time to initiate "Operation Background Task Termination!". The first campaign of this war. Thanks for the reminder MetaHaze. :)

Yea, closing Steam will not terminate the game you're currently playing.

That is why I have the most powerful tools on earth for gaming.. Razer Synapse 2.0 (Razers New Gamebooster), and ASC 6.0. Tharrak :)
This way I can go long hours on PS2 without having any interruptions from those bad background processes that cause staggers in my fps and even crashes..
EDIT: I rather go with Sony's website, even though Steam will most likely be the same thing. Steam is just there as another form of advertisement.

It's been known since tech test that Steam would carry the game.
