View Full Version : Very little Advertising for PS2

I have been watching and waiting but I still see nothing!
You would think that it would at least be on the splash screen for Steam or some gaming sites...
I wonder if they are trying to start out slow, get the established community into it first, then ramp up the ads to bring in the noob zerg.
I am definitely planning to join the 3rd East server :) I think the first 2 are going to be jammed.
Either way, i hope they really step up the advertising. I want to see this at least on some web advertising. Better yet, I want to see it right after the HALO 4 commercial, have a MAX unit squash the helmet of the "Master Chief"

My guess is, they are going to start small. Once the game is solid, they will be heavily advertising it. That's what Riot Games Inc. did with League of Legends and look at them now.

There is no point advertising a beta, or the launch day, for a F2P. That only causes a massive hype, resulting in completly packed server and long quenes. After the initial hype, when stuff eases down and people stop playing 24/7, you have lots of half full servers.
Solution? Dont go crazy and build a hype. Instead, launch, then advertise big, to allow people to come to the game one after another, instead of a gigantic, massive zerg that rages because they cant actually play due to full servers and long quenes.
They are doing this exactly right, if they go into overdrive a bit after release.

We've spent quite a bit on PlanetSide 2 and you'll definitely see something on Steam once it launches but without a pre-load, there is no point to doing it yet.

Thanks for posting RadarX. It just seems like after month of build up and media blitzes the Launch seems very quiet.
It definitely isn't on my end. I have been spamming my friends on the internet, phone, and face to face!

Would of been nice to see some big adds on the major gaming sites. If you can do that with steam it will probably just be as good if not better I guess though.

Well WoT slow burned up into a juggernaut.
They advertise now more than ever. I don't remember them doing so at launch.

Being F2P there is no marketing action to initiate until the game is availible to download. There is simply nothing to advertise yet.

I have been pointing it out to those lucky enough to get paired with me on Steam in DoW II: Retribution's "Last Stand" game mode. Not spamming it mind you, just letting them know about a great F2P FPS.

The mainstream FPS crowd is already aware of Planetside 2 if they go to youtube. You have fairly big youtube personalities talking about it like Levelcap, Totalbiscut, Matimi0, RivalXFactor and a few others. Which is all free press.
Advertising will mostly pull in the more causal players. Which is a good thing, but really that's more important for after launch than it is for day1. Most of the hardcore FPS crowd has a least heard of Planetside 2 I think.

This is a fairly accurate statement. PlanetSide 2 is in an odder position because this is a much higher fidelity free to play game than you'd normally find. There will be some advertising for certain, but without a retail box, folks have nothing to buy.

I hope its not added up too heavily. Over Steam it should have a big slot, but other than that, keep it low.

It's true there is no retail box...
However one really good strategy would be to HAND OUT THE GAME FOR FREE as a promotion at EB Games or Bestbuy.
Another option is for christmas next month... To bundle the game with the first patch on a disk that comes with 1000-2000 SC for 10-20$
I know some money must be lost somewhere on packaging though, so it may not be viable. But the promotion of the game could be worth it.
Since it's out today, what was the final ESRB rating of it? That could affect simply 'handing it out' too. :/
The sweetest deal of all would be with nVidea or something, to include the game with their new cards for xmas. DONE.

It was the same with the original PlanetSide. Very few people knew about it other than those that cared about the game and followed it from its infancy or were directly exposed to it by another player. I wish they would have taken a different approach in this regard this time around.

I wanted to drop back in and update this thread with a few initiatives that are going on right now. Here are some of the major sites we have advertising on:
Curse (http://www.curse.com/)
Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/pc)
GameFAQs (www.gamefaqs.com/pc)
IGN (http://www.ign.com)
Gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com/)
Wikia (http://planetside.wikia.com/wiki/PlanetSide_2_Wiki)
These are all extremely high traffic sites right in the demographic for a PlanetSide 2 player.

Those spots are where the more hard core gamers live, who will most likely know about the game anyways.
Run some TV ads during football games, like COD to attract a much broader crowd who might not be wise to this game.

Honestly I might be wrong saying this but I think running tv ads for a video game is more for marketing towards console players. Now I know it wouldn't hurt but why waste that money when you know this is a PC game. If you're a PC gamer regardless of you knowing about this game or not you will come across it advertised on a website. I think they're doing a great job at the way PS2 is approaching the market. Come out slow then hit it right in the gut. Like others have said and I'm not lambasting you but having the servers being zerged
the first week would probably not be very beneficial. Just like WOT they came out slow and look where they're at. Just my opinion and I hope PS2 is very successful because they damn well deserve it.

Didn't Rift advertise on TV? But I'm not sure if it was until after they launched.

You actually have a point, but that is not to say cod is still extremely popular in the pc realm, and sells very well there.
Besides, it's not just console junkies that watch sports or other things, and the ads themselves probably says a lot about why that game is so mainstream, across all platforms.

You guys do realize TV Advertisements are extremely expensive with probably little turnaround right?
Beerbeer
2012-11-21, 10:04 AM
Of course.
But, like that old adage says, you have to spend money if you want to make money.

Hamma was saying that they'd be spending money, and not making any of that money back. That'd be the problem.
Have to market where the target people are most (great steam ad, by the way). I wouldn't market a brand new waffle iron at a car show.
TV ads are expensive, and I don't think that's the place most PC gamers are going to see the ads.
I for one, don't even HAVE cable. a lot of people these days don't.
Now, and add on say, HULU, yeah. could see that working.

Every marketeer will tell you that TV ads is like shooting with hail. You only use it for general awareness purposes and if you have an insanely high budget and a product for the masses.
PS2 doesn't need much awareness within the hardcore gaming crowd although these ads are good for confirmation. This game will sell itself if they manage to get up those cinema tools asap.

ProSat.1 are about to put their first PS2 AD on German TV, if I find the link I will post.
Just waiting to see it in the UK as I was told they were signing up with someone to advertise in the UK but they would not tell me who

I JUST saw the ad on Pro7 (watching re-runs of "switch" - ha).
It's well done and the speaker is the (german) voice of Vin Diesel. So actually a pretty good job imo.
But i also think they should stress the fact more that you can play with "thousands" of other players SIMULTANEOUSLY. Because every mmo ad states that you can play "with thousands of other people". The feature that makes PS2 stand out is slightly lacking there.
No idea if they can make german vin do a quick new voice job, but i would say it'd be worth it.
