Is there more to the guns than the 4 stats? I've always thought that a high rate-of-fire was ideal for close-quarters, but I've seen weapons with very low ROF, long reload speed, and labeled as long range, with descriptions stating "ideal for close-quarters".
I know it's a 'noob' question, but in this game, what's the best way of determining what guns are good for long ranges and which are good for short? I'm trying to setup my loadouts, and before I spend any certs on upgrades, I'd like to know I'm going with the right weapons.

Actually, you bring up a good question.
I don't have proof, but sometimes in my many gun trials, some guns performed differently at different ranges in regards to damage. I could just be imagining myself, but it feels like the devs coded in different damage numbers at different ranges for different guns, regardless of what the bars may say.
That's why the damage bars can sometimes be misleading, or it feels that way.

yes, some guns have faster bullet velocity for example

Recoil seems to vary from gun to gun as well, with there being little mention of that in the stats.
Make use of the free trials is probably the best approach - you can always roll up a scrap character and then delete it afterwards to get around the time limits.
What that doesn't let you do, of course, is see how certs affect the weapons. I'd love to know how slug ammo changes the range performance of the shotguns, for instance, but short of buying a shottie and spending the certs there's no way to find out.

I really wish they'd just give us the damn numbers. It's a good way to keep them honest.
COD tends to have "bars" all over the place but if you look up a chart (which there are many) it's pretty clear they don't really mean anything.

They really just need to give us the kind of detail that Blacklight Retribution does.
I've said it before; I'm afraid of the kind of min-maxing that having that much detail tends to produce, which tends to devolve into elitism ("What? You're using that gun? Why would you do that, it has 1.3% less DPS and 2.8% worse accuracy than this gun. You're a noob!")
That said, the current implementation is rough around the edges. The thing is that weapons have a lot more attributes than the ones listed, and some of those are only in the descriptions of the guns. In addition, AFAIK you can only see these descriptions in the Marketplace. So when I'm equipping a gun on my character, and I'm looking at my options at the inventory screen, I find myself going back to the Marketplace to remind myself whether this gun is the one that has lower hip-fire recoil or the one with the really fast bolt-action (so to speak).

Lots of details on weapons is exposed via the API that you guys will be seeing hopefully soon.
