At the time of writing and at definite low time pops, out of 3,395K active players, 13.3K play PlanetSide 2 and PS2 is the tenth most played game on the list. That's a few hundred less than currently play CoD:MW3.

Today's peak so far was 29.7K players, which I assume would have been around midnight since it's not yet been 5 PM. That's 7K more than the peak amount of players that played CoD:MW3 so far today.

That's Steam players only.

Yea - they hit #3 during the first few days of release. Though I didn't see what the numbers were then.

#3? Well if the current numbers are anything to go by, should be a peak in the order of 60K.

This would only be those who play through Steam, yes? I certainly do not.

I've been keeping a close eye on it and I've never seen it beyond 30k on Steam since launch. I have spotted it in the top 3 though - it just depends on the time of day that you check it.

I'd love to know how many people the developers had been estimating were going to be playing on the site and if it's met up to their expectations.

Assuming they are able to sustain these numbers then I think they'll be doing well, as other F2P's like Blacklight Retribution and Tribes Ascend started off fairly well, but fell a lot after the initial buzz died down.

Of course there's other players who have access to the game outwith Steam to take into consideration, and really the biggest factor for Sony is how many players are actually paying money.

Yep, same here. I think only about a quarter to a third of the players I know on my steam play through Steam. I'd expect most Europeans play through a pro7 account.

Very hard to estimate the actual amount.

I'm slightly surprised the PR team at Sony hasn't been more vocal on this really, posting some early figures. And I assume claiming the "most amount of people online at one time in an FPS game/server" record.

I didn't see a reason to get it on Steam even though I have a Steam account. Is there a reason?

I'm sure there will be Steam badges, but I couldn't care less about that. I'd rather not have Steam pop-ups while playing or waste even a shred of PS resources.

Take into account people like me who got PS2 through steam on first second of it launching and removed it and downloaded it from main site to install on my SDD and run without steam lagging out my underspec PC
