When are we expecting PS1 to go free?

Why the hell would PS1 ever be free?
They aren't just going to run PS1 servers with no revenue stream attached, and they aren't going to waste valuable development resources creating in-game purchasables for a dead game.
If anything, it could be released as freeware for private servers, but I don't see any motivation to take that kind of risk with the IP.

Accuser, Smedley tweeted not too long ago that PS1 is going free to play. I don't know if they're planning on doing anything to monetize it somehow, but that's what we've heard.

Well we have 1 server on PS1 and its one universe. Whether its laggy or not. One auraxis one server. I think there will be enough diehards to fill it for a good fight IMO.

I just want it to go back up for the once-in-a-while nostalgic trip. My outfit has people who hasn't played Planetside 1, and we'd like to do a Planetside 1 night every once in a while so they can see the first one.

I have heard of other outfits trying this method out also. Anyone who loved Planetside 1 as the unique game it was, is bullshitting themselves thinking that planetside 2 is making up for the first one.

Yeah, the current Call of Planetfield 2 we have should have been PSNext, and PS2 should be launching next year imo. Never played PS1 for more than two hours (I just bought my way into PS2 beta), but I really want to give it a decent go with a almost full server. Despite not being a PS vet, I'm really disappointed by the magnitude of stuff they cut from the original. ..oO(Doors?!) >_<

As both games stand right now, I'd rather play Planetside over PS2. The only thing PS2 has going for it over the first one is the FPS mechanic.

PS1 has massive problems. The engine is a clusterfuck of blergs, running slower on a Q9550 and a GTX 570 than it did on a P3 with a Geforce 6800. I remember i had always 60 FPS with the 6800, the GTX570 provided me with about 30 in big battles.

That is if you can get the game to run at all.


If PS1 goes F2P, it needs a proper overhaul. The Engine is bejond salvation, so it needs a new one. So, unless SOE goes into crazy mode and redoes PS1 in Forgelight, it will remain to be dead. You may get a burst of interrest for a month or two, but some of us played the game for several years, and if there isnt anything new coming along, it wont hold peoples interrest for very long.

Sad tho, loving PS1. But for me it was always about playing with the Outfit and leading the zerg, so im quite happy with PS2. :)
