So upon seeing the twitter request, I have decided to back arclegger up on this one.

Tonight, starting at 8 EST, I will have a new NC character on Connery. This NC character will never have any certs put into him, any money spent on him, and I will only use stock weapons and shield.

Tonight is the night that I back up the planetside 2 team in showing that this game definitely isn't Pay to Win.

People have been playing without using certs or spending SC for the last week.

Doubtful, considering it defeats the purpose of the game. This is being done upon request.

Good to see you on Connery! Hopefully we see you around tonight!

Not doubtful for those who play part time and are trying to save all their certs to unlock a medic for example. 500 certs for the rez nade for a start.

Are you doing a marathon session or something, whats the time period your aiming for?

Good luck.

Exactly. Those people are saving to spend certs. I will never use a cert point, ever. They will just sit in reserve and never be used, and this will be my character from now on to help people understand that this game isn't P2W.

I stream Mon-Thurs 8-11 EST. Weekends are random. Starting in january it will be a lot more.

Thanks for the good luck, I'm going to need it!

I hardly spent any certs through beta, I doubt it is that rare.

There's a guy on the forums already doing this. Haven't seen a continuation yet though.

PS2 Forums Thread: Free to play or pay to win? Video inside (http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/index.php?threads/free-to-play-or-pay-to-win-video-inside.50818/)

Here's his first video:

None of this will help kill any of the die hard Anti-F2P crowd. I do not know how many of them there are even. But hopefully this kind of thing will help deter most from thinking it is Pay-to-Win. I applaud you FortySe7en for making a video!

It's not pay to win, but you do get an advantage by having membership, or purchasing guns with SC.

Boosts allow you to gain more exp, which = more certs. It's not a large increase, but over the time this game will be played, it will add up.

Also, not having to use certs on guns is also helpful. You have x certs more than the other person who used certs to buy it instead. Of course, the guns should be sidegrades.

Still, I haven't payed a dime yet, and i'm extremely pleased with the game. I will be picking some SC around christmas to see if it has any effect, but I highly doubt it.

I most certainly won't partake, not least of which because I am still learning how to FPS on PC... but I fully support this! I will definitely be watching what pops up on youtube, sir!

Ever hear someone complain that they can't purchase only the channels they want on their TV subscription? They only watch 3 channel. Why must they pay for the other ones?

PS2 allows you to piece-meal your purchases. I payed a PS1 sub for a long time. I put quite a bit of money into that game without any return other then fun game play. And if you like, you can play this game for free! This F2P model is pretty good imo.

You guys are awesome, and thanks for all of you who tuned in to night 1 of the 0 Certifcation Point challenge.

I was squaded with Arclegger for a majority of it as you all saw, and this was the end result for me...

http://i49.tinypic.com/14mw5c9.png - Its not so bad now, but I have a feeling once I start racking up the hundreds of certs, its going to be very sad for me not to spend them...

Again, thank you all who watched / followed! Hopefully this will bring some positive attention to PS2 and people will stop thinking its Tribes Ascend...

Round 2 starts in 3 hours!

I still don't get how people are saying this is P2W when there is never a winner......

Mind you it's quite simply P2ST - "Pay to Save Time" model.

The only thing buying weapons does is give you options that will take you longer to get using certs and you can only use one gun at a time so it really does not matter anyway...esspecially if you kinda suck anyway haha.

Buying a new gun isn't going to make you better at a shooting game.

If you suck, then you suck because you suck and got outplayed, not because the guy who killed you bought a CARV S or something.

Same here. I haven't been able to spend cash but the rate of certification gain is very decent and I am having fun playing for free.

I have a character on a medium/high pop server but paying a sub will allow me to make it easier having characters on multiple servers and very populated servers (like Mattherson where my outfit is).

Edit: FYI, since I'm saving certs to buy advanced certs, I'm still playing with default weapons and just have:
- a reflex sight on my engineer
- a silencer on my infiltrator rifle

I'm doing perfectly fine as is. I did spend certs though but every free player can do so too just like I did.

This is mostly applied to those who used the Station Cash to get weapons. Eventually enough of you will have cert points and use them, and I will have not used any of them.

I still firmly believe that even a fully maxed player I could take down easily with stock everything, but we will find out!

Using no certs at all doesn't sound like too much fun, since many of them are really upgrades... You will always be at disadvantage.

FortySe7en
2012-11-29, 02:27 PM
Disadvantaged, but not out of the fight, which is why this isn't pay to win.

Having an advantage because of in game mechanics, and being pay to win are two different things that people are getting incredibly confused about.

The game is designed around upgrading. However, these upgrades are not "ultimately" game changing. There is no sense of "you have to buy this or this because its the best and thats just the way it is". People can mix and match and do whatever they choose to, or you can be like me and spend no certs at all. Either way all it does is change the dynamic of how you fight, it doesn't force you to choose a specific weapon.

this is not pay to win.. only thing paying does, is give you a headstart on multiple choices...

and any upgrade, comes with a downgrade too... that's the model...

Sounds like a fun challenge, to never in the life of the character use any certs. Its like a mini game.

Say, in that Stat display, what is that from? i have never seen that one in the game.

and any upgrade, comes with a downgrade too... that's the model...

Please do tell what downside there is to putting a front grip on a weapon that previously didn't have any rail attachment?
Or Flares to an aircraft that didn't have anything in the utility slot?

Until you have something there to begin with, to do a trade off against, they will always be straight upgrades.

None the less, I am looking forward to the outcome of this experiment.
