Oddly enough when their servers went down, so did this one.

I didn't know your server was a SOE server.

Mass amounts of people looking at PSU when SOE servers go down. See it all the time.

Sure but in order to cause a server bottleneck due to visitors loading, shouldn't it take more than 10 seconds?

Another oddity, their server started displaying "down for maintenance" and this site started loading half normally again.

It wouldn't be a crime if SOE sponsored their servers or rented them, I am just curious.

I don't know. It could simply be that the when planetside2.com is experiencing severe server load, PSU is too, since a lot of folks navigate both simultaneously.

PSU is an independent fan site. It is not an official SOE site, but is very informative about Planetside 2. These forums are pretty active, but a minority of the actual Planetside community.

Google for "Planetside 2 forum", see where Planetside 2 pops up. Same with "planetside"

PSU here appears high on the seach index for anything Planetside 2 related, because it is after all around for over 9 years, and was in the past the biggest source for PS2 related info. We had Pro7 and SOE here every day for quite some time.
When the official forums went up, this died down quite a bit, and we are far from where we once were, but PSU still is the biggest PS2 fansite on the net, having its own Wiki and the devs lurking around.

Because of that, it appears high on google. Because of that, whenever the servers go down, people fire up google to figure out whats going on. Thats trashing the server, as loads run to PSU in seach for info.

Thats what also caused the outage on Launch day. Pretty much the moment the launch couter ticked Zero, the official site and most of SOEs web stuff died, so people went to the next best thing, PSU. That traffic killed PSU as well.

Unless Hamma goes ball deep and upgrades the server quite a bit, that will keep happening. :)

I guess I underestimated the speed of which people switch from one forum to another, lol. I could have sworn that after their servers went down while constantly browsing for threads, no more than 10 seconds clicking this site on my favorites also showed no load.

And people think the game will not do well, the load speaks for itself, that or Hammas 386 running the site :(

It's not the forums that killed us this time it was the server status page people were loading.

We have some plans to improve our performance that we are working on but when we get a huge amount of traffic at once that's what causes our downtimes.

There is no tie to their systems at SOE at all - it' just the mass of people.

There's also a minority of PlanetSide 2 players on the Official forums, btw.

There's also the items basti mentioned.

Oh and we aren't running on a 386. We run on about 4 cloud servers right now. One for the main PSU site, one for Wiki, Database and various other services.

Lol, I know, I'm just being exaggerated.

Also, here's a graph!

Last 12hrsof traffic with the spike during server downtime then the sharp drop while we experienced a short outage.

The OF are a minority of the community as well. Obviously larger there, but extremely diluted of veteran Planetside opinion. Probably another of my positives about PSU that you took as a poke.

Naw I didn't why do you think I always take your stuff as a poke? :p

Gryphon sexified the Server Status page to auto refresh server info no more need to refresh the page. This should solve our issues next server downtime everyone wont be refreshing all the time.
