View Full Version : What is up with the performance of Planetside 2?

Seriously I have 6 cores and 6 threads, there is one core at 90%, 3 others are like 20-40% and the others are doing nothing. Yet the ALT+F says I'm CPU bottlenecked? The game shows as using 19% of my CPU........???
So my GPU usage is odd because MSI Afterburner shows the usage at 99% for both cards under SLI. I have no idea why the usage is so high for both? Not even BF3 has usage that high :\ I'm using the latest official drivers, which are the latest as no beta driver has been released since.
My FPS is around 80 at the warp gate but like 35 anywhere else but my usage never drops apart from when it is loading? What is going on? I swear when I had SLI off my usage was like 40% for a single GPU, I'm using 680SLI.
My Ram usage is 2.5GB Ram and I have 16GB and Windows only uses 2.6 atm when the game isn't running, so no chance of it being a ram issue lol. I'm also running off an SSD so it isn't like the lack of transfer speed from a HDD or anything......
I don't get why performance sucks.

It's DX9.
DX9 was written before the proliferation of multicore cpu's and wasn't designed to use them. If there were DX10 or 11 versions of the client a lot of the cpu bottleneck issues would go away.

DX9 does have a few big differences in the threading model and other architectural changes but to say that using DX11 would "fix" things is vastly oversimplifying the issue.

This (http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2012/12/01/the-big-fight-begins-windows-xp-drops-below-40-market-share-while-windows-8-passes-1/) I guess. Though I doubt many of those systems can even run this game TBH.

iv seen alot of these post and tbh i have no problems. 130+ fps and during huge fights down to around 40 ish fps. i have a 6 core at 4.4ghz. most cores work at around 20% some peak to 30-50% sometimes.
game runs fine and no problems, bar the odd screen flash then i have to restart game.

Honestly the real bottleneck isnt so much the cpu as it is the memory, thats why you dont max out your multiple cores but still show as cpu limited. Its very important to get the fastest memory your system can support.
The DX9 thing sounds good if you think it supports more people, but as has been pointed out, if you cant run DX10 or 11 then your system really cant run the game anyway, atleast not at anything but lowest settings, low res, and not in big fights. You may lose more people due to the lower performance than due to not having DX10+. and yes i know just using DX10+ will not solve the performance issue, but it would help.
Can't wait for the seperate DX10/11 client at some point. WoW did it, and many others do too, so its really not a huge deal.
Although to be honest the performance is at the bottom of my list of problems with the game, i dont even hardly play much anymore. Just doesnt have the suck you in and make you never wanna quit feel that PS1 had, feels like more battlefield and that never stays fun for more than a few weeks or a month or two.

Even my new i5 would drop to below 30fps (though barely) before I o/c'd it to 4ghz.
I heard from somewhere that January is going to have a nice optimization patch, I guess only time will tell.

Its fair to say dx1o or 11 would make for a game that ran much better for everyone with a modern computer.

Let me ask this, quite a few games offer the choice of different DX versions when launching. Is this something that will be possible for PS2 in the future?

I'd love to read more on this if you can remember where you read it and could drop a link.

Twitter and I don't get along, so I had to copy and paste, but there it is.

awww we need to wait until January for the optimization stuff :(

I really wouldnt say the performance issue come from dx9 itself. Its the engine. Which is why saying "oh its DX 9" is over simplifying it. Yes it is dx9 but only because Forgelight uses it. Other DX9 game run phenomenally well when compared to to PS2 with no one around you (low pop server, vaccant continent). Forgelight is still a little baby and needs to grow.
Optimization really needs to come faster though. It is a free to play game so a lot of people do not have really good rigs. Many users are using laptops, which are getting close, but will never be able to compete with a lesser priced desktop. But they are getting better. January really cant come any sooner, since a lot of people will tell you (read the official forums) that they love the game but they just cant deal with the framerates. Its starting to fracture the community already, and stopping new players from really enjoying what PS2 can be all about. Battles at massive scale.
For me to really say the game is finally optimized, it needs to run at 60fps at any setting for a moderate rig. That needs to be what their "reccomended" specs are for. I meet that mark (amd 955 @3,8, 8gig dd3 @1600 cas 9, and gtx 660ti), but get down to the upper 20's in large battles and can only get 60+ at warpgate with no one there. These results are with fine tuning the .ini file too. But again, the engine isnt optimized to where it should be.

What my MSI AB says when I'm in a big battle, I dunno why it fluctuates so much. I use GPU 2 as primary for heat reasons as my Mobo sucks and the x16 slots are right next to each other :\ SLI is turned off here, 680SLI system.
Yet I go back in again with a different monitor into a large battle and get......
GPU http://s12.postimage.org/qcqrw0oml/Untitled.jpg
http://s12.postimage.org/fda5y5nl9/Untitled1.jpg
CPU http://s8.postimage.org/616p8fzjp/Untitled2.jpg
I dunno it's weird, there is something causing low FPS, It seems to be when lots of people are around. However I can stand there and no one is on my screen and it's still low, probably because it is still rendering everyone around. What I don't get though is why lots of people are invisible but then suddenly pop into the screen out of nowhere.

I got this same exact problem when PS2 was in beta. I was hoping the problem would be at least mostly remedied by the time of release. I am using a core i3 2100--PS2 should be eating this cpu alive, yet it is only utilizing about 60-65% of it. The logical cores get taxed 75-80%, and the hyperthreading cores hardly get used at all. Also, I have used the "core unparker", and received no performance gains.

JawsOfLife, based on your information. PS2 is currently eating your CPU alive. "The logical cores get taxed 75-80%".

Why isn't it 100% though? And why is hyperthreading being ignored? When I fold on my computer everything is taxed 100%. Why isn't the game maxing everything out too, since it clearly wants so much power.

You can always disable one core and hyperthreading then go run the game and find out why:)
I don't think its needing power as much as it is operating inefficiently. I have no clue about why the developers are not using it. In the past, it seemed that it wasn't worth it because performance gain was nominal.

I do try...I really do.
For those with good riggs and still having issues. I do this after EVERY SINGLE PATCH (because if I don't I get 40-50 fps at the WG nad 18-25 in fights)
AFTER the patch is finished and yes it's a hassle.. Delete the ww_crashuploader.exe, Planetside 2.exe and useroptions.ini file. Everytime I do this I get twice the FPS.. 40-50 in LARGE fights and 100-120 at the WG.
I know this is a stupid question but if you're deleting the Planetside 2.exe how exactly are you launching the game?

I think there's separate thingies for launching the game and launching the launchpad, so i'd assume through the launcher as normal.

That or Steam redownloads the files...
Just a follow up, I deleted all those files and I didn't see any change.
I did change by render distance to 5000 and gained about 15fps. That change also moved me from CPU bound to GPU bound.

Performance seems fine to me. Sorry it's not 130 FPS all the time. Never do I feel like "oh man it's choppy this sucks!" It runs smooth for me all the time; big battles or not. Didn't tweak any of the settings; default draw distance and quality settings.
