View Full Version : Moment of Silence and Cease Fire for the CT victims this Sunday

Before I begin, I know that this place is supposed to be an escape from the real world for us all. But sometimes I feel its best to show love and support for those that need it the most, no matter where, or how.. And after yesterday I truly believe this is one of those times.

As I am sure by now most of you are aware of the terrible tragedy that occurred yesterday morning at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, CT. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/12/live-updates-newtown-ct-school-shooting/

Nihil, myself, and several members of the Ghosts of the Revolution outfit on the Mattherson server would like to hold a cease fire to show our support for the victims and their families, and to also offer our deepest thoughts and prayers to everyone effected by this horrible event. We invite everyone from all the factions to participate.

Exact details of the cease fire are still being worked out, but what we would like to shoot for is this Sunday at 8:00 PM EST. What follows is the post by Nihil on the SOE boards, and a quote of said post. http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/index.php?threads/those-in-connecticut.66690/#post-832350

Good question. i'm with GotR on Matherson and talking to our guys about this. If we aim for Sunday, when my guys usually have our fun raid, we could do it then. That's 8pm eastern. We can get in touch with the VS leaders on that server.

Sites to hit:
- CommandRank5
- PlanetSide Universe
- RedditSide
- *groan* Twitter

For those on another server, please try to organize something. i'm talking to Matherson players, but it should work elsewhere.

If you have an in with the devs please talk to them about this.

One thought on making this work is having everyone switch to medic and have their med apps drawn. If someone accidentally fires, it won't break the cease fire. Then keep all the troops participating mingle close enough that if someone jerk decides to blast away, he'll get some serious grief.

The organized outfits should be able to keep their troops from breaking the cease fire. We can try using /y and /orders to get our respective zerglings to participate.

In PS1 i would say, let's meet at the Anvil. i don't know any big landmarks in PS2 yet. i recommend something central. Define the region as a cease fire zone.

Would be awesome to have several folks record the event. All the troops shoulder to shoulder.

Please spread the word.

Great idea but could potentially end in disaster.

While I respect and understand what you are doing, it likely won't work :(

It reminds me of something like that in World of Warcraft, they were all in lines in front of a lake and got killed by a whole clan who went on the funeral just to troll them.

Just do each factions at their warpgate, it won't be as nice as every factions united but at least it will work.

Just wanted to do something. GOTR may just have a moment of silence, as long as it is something to show support.

I can appreciate the thought behind it, and i understand it. However, this is a game and I log on to play, not to incorporate problems going on in the world into it.

I respect the thought behind it, so don't get me wrong on that.

Its a sad and horrible tragedy.

And this is just a bad idea.
All it will do is give attention whores a flag to wave when this "truce" inevitably gets broken and they will just use it as a means to say bad things of FPS games.

Honestly this is no place to try and foist real world issues on people.

Sorry I won't be taking part. Mainly because I think the obsession over these kind of stories just eggs on copycats the same way you have copycats of teen suicide one or two years down the line.

Don't take this as me insulting those who died I just don't like the hype around it.

I wish you luck, but I fear you'll get trolled with high explosives.

One thing: This is not a tragedy. An earthquake is a tragedy. Someone dying in a car wreck is a tragedy.

This was an atrocity.

Agree with all of it but "likely", that should be replaced with Most definitely won't work

No, this is a bad idea. It draw more attention and encourages other copy cats.

I understand and respect all of your opinions, and honestly. You guys are more the likely correct to expect some jerk to take advantage and ruin the moment.

But in a world were video games are used as a scapegoat when terrible things happen, I wanted to show that in our game. In our community, we have a bond. Back in PlanetSide 1 I always felt a very strong sense of community. Sure we all may not have played on the same faction or sever. But aside for a few bad apples I felt like we all got along pretty well for the most part. Talking about the game on this site, commandrank5.com, and every other site that has anything to do with the game we all play. Heck we even got together to set up a few events. The PlanetSide day event last July went pretty well I think, and I remember having a really good time.

I guess after watching the news, I just needed to remind myself, and anyone that would listen that games aren't the problem. I wanted show off how great we are as a community.

It's a great gesture bro. I'd hate to see you and your friends get trolled, and sadly...that is most likely what will happen. But salutes, man.

A better way to do this is have the devs give everyone a min. wep lock

Heh, yeah that could work. Well, probably not. There are other ways to go about sending some unlocky SOB back to the tube. :p

I'm for asking a dev that as long as we know if we're going to get some people to show up.

If you don't want to participate then don't come. What is the harm in this? The intentions are pure and all people are trying to do is reflect and show respect. If you don't like the idea don't come there is no need to rag on the idea. There is no harm in this.

Honestly if you want to participate you should be posting in this thread, if you don't just leave it be.

I hope you guys don't all meet up and have some massive "organized" cease-fire. Because I WILL be there and I WILL be piloting a lib with some badass gunners.

The shooting was nothing short of a tragedy, and it makes me sick thinking about what the families have to go through. But this is a video game and an MMO, and I will take advantage of such a potentially epic farm.

With much respect

-Nox

And before you all get mad at me and think I'm a terrible person, at least I'm honest enough to say I"ll do it. It'll happen either way, whether it's me or ancient PS1 TRG.

If it is going to happen, the 1 minute weapons lock idea is probably the best way to go about it. And a light show.

Do you know how many children die each day because of firearms around the world? The anwers is: too many to organize moments of silence for all of them. The only thing that make this tradegy something special is the fact that it happen in the usa and not in some other country and that it is big in the media there.

By the way playing a shooter is not a proper way to show our respect to the victims of a masacre. Even if you want to organize a cease fire. Maybe you should simply take a day off the game in respect of the victims.

Nice thought but you will be massively disappointed. This is a free to play game after all and it only takes one arsehole to taint what you think is a great community. Look what happened when you actually had to pay to go to Auraxis.

While i see it is a tragedy and all people shuold realise this happens all around the world on a daily bases...

Children die by the masses due shitty healthcare, lack of food/water or some idiot who wants to run a south african country.

Just because it happens in the U S of A it is some kind of 'huge' tragedy now.

I remember Obama saying these accidents happen too often. I guess he's right and that's not only for US.
Which raises the question: Should we do memorials in games every time something awful happens to us humans? If yes, what are the criteria? Innocent children involved only? Minimum 10 plus casualties? Only related to accidents on your own soil? Or because you care in this particular situation?

I think the last question is the answer. You and others feel you should do it, so do it. This is what you need to do, hopefully people will join you, maybe others will bomb you. It doesn't matter. This is your statement, go for it.

To give you an example: After seeing too much racism in PS2, at one point I decided I couldn't stand it anymore. I wrote a very naive post on the official SOE forum with a call to action for people to stop being indifferent and start recording and reporting these incidents, not naming and shaming them. Within minutes, the post got ridiculed and after 20 min RadarX decided to lock and remove it (for unknown reasons as it wasn't against the policy, still awaiting his explanation). In the end I didn't care, it was to be expected. I just had to do it.

So yes, you probably will get trolled but who cares. If this is what you need to do, do it.

It is a tragedy, by no means do I disagree or belittle that by what I say.

The only reason this got so much attention compared to the countless other school shootings (yes even others in elementary schools) is because the media blew it wide open. Its sad, but move on. For those that might actually be directly affected my heart goes out to you...for the rest of you it has absolutely no bearing on your day to day lives. If anything a moment of silence in a game that promotes death, destruction, and mayhem is ignorant and poorly thought out.

For those that would call me an asshole...your right. But I can honestly say everything above as my school was shot up by a deranged dumbass, and yes I was in the school. So...I say again, tragedy, it sucks and my heart goes out to all of those DIRECTLY affected. The rest of you will forget about it in a week so why bother?

If you really wanna do something write your congressman that you don't like that every dude runs around with a gun. Everything else is just to get peace for your mind and does not help anyone.

If your emotions are so negatively effected by a shooting, it would make sense to just not log into a shooter until you're over it. Asking everyone to log in and not play is frankly a bit pie in the sky and silly.

Why should he? There is a real big political/legal problem regarding the availability of guns in the usa. Every bugger can legaly own a gun there. Not talking about this wont help.

I think so too...and to me it's so stupid that it's almost funny again: Those guys saying "Oh yeah. The Problem was, we have not enough weapons. If the school personell had Guns themselves, they could've shot that guy down before he could kill kids"... really?
But alas, that doesn't belong here *hint to the political discussion Forum*...

The cease fire idea... well... do whatever you wish, but don't expect anyone to bother except the ~5 of you who planned it. You'll probably make someone happy for the free-kills, but if you feel better then go ahead...
