Big fan of PS2 here. Looks like everything is going well with the launch.
But how is the game doing number wise? Anyone here any dollar/player/sales numbers from any reputable source?

Peak for PS2 today, on a sunday, ON STEAM ONLY, was 16K. That's about the size it was a month after launch too, on a tuesday.
Was around 30K on Steam a week or two after launch, on a tuesday.

It's doing great so far: 1,6 million registered users. It's already their biggest game: http://venturebeat.com/2012/12/12/sony-online-entertainment-chief-says-planetside-2-online-frag-game-is-a-smashing-success-interview/

They could have a billion users, but the only number that counts is active users, who actually play, and it's not good.
Edit: merge servers IMO.

Define good. It's not getting the numbers like COD but that was never to be expected. And from a revenue point of view they don't seem to be complaining.

Good is crowded continents, a myriad of battle sizes, lots of people attacking and defending multiple points on the map simultaneously. The first two weeks had this.
Poor is one marginally-filled continent, the rest empty, one zerg running around capping empty bases. This is today's reality.
And revenues: the less people, the less money. You don't need a degree in economics to figure this out and I doubt Sony will EVER come out and say they aren't making money. They never have to-date.

Not bad :D
Honestly the only folks who really know how well it's doing are SOE and I doubt they will say much in the near term.

I'm wondering how many people are like me who originally had the Steam version, but downloaded the normal version. Steam takes up too many resources in an already resource-intensive game?

I don't play through Steam. When I close the game launched from Steam, something doesn't close and the menu music continues to play until I manually stop it from playing. SO I just launch it from the non steam download.

I use steam for quite a few different games just not PS2, there advantages and disadvantages that come with it.
