When I find myself camping the same spot I've camped before on an infiltrator I've noticed that the distance at which enemies or at least infantry is shown doesn't seem to be constant.
Is there some kind of algorithm built into either the client or server which dynamically alters your view range? Maybe makes it so you don't see targets as far out when there are more people around?
Sometimes I see a pod land - far off - and as soon as the person who's in it moves he disappears from the screen.

Exactly. As far as I know the render distance of other players and vehicles decreases with the number of players around you. This is why you sometimes can only see 50m in big fights and enemys appear right in front of you. It sucks because PS2 says it supports large battles, but in reality the battles it supports are not that large.
Afaik this is serverside and you can't change that on your client. Smed said they are on it, but you know Smed...

They did announce that a patch next month will address this issue.

It seems that if the infantry battle is large enough, the render distance goes down to about 30m or something like that. I've seen this happen a few times, and it's quite irksome at times.

I don't believe it's just the amount of players in a fight that determine rendering distance, it's also their position in relation to you and target being rendered. So, if there's a huge infantry fight but you're alone hundreds of meter away from them some are going to render. Where as were you in the thick of the huge Infantry fight render distance might be very short. It's based on the Individual not the zone. This is probably pretty obvious to many, but it's something some seem to fail to grasp. Like Snipers complaining the render distance is too short for them to take advantage of their weapons range, rather than understand it's their position which is bad.

I don't see how that's true. If there is line of sight and your weapon can reach that far the players should render, period. We obviously have to adapt to the game's failings, but it is the game that fails, not us.

This right here.
This issue right here will make or break this game. The player culling in this game and getting killed by invisibles is the most frustrating aspect of this game. Just about the only thing that doesn't vanish in thin air in this game is tanks so if you're a tank driver you know all about getting victimized by invisible libs, invisible infantry, invisible rockets, invisible AV turrets. Half the time, I can't even see infantry period, friendly OR enemy so I end up running over friendlies and then turning around to get shot by enemies (and angry friendlies!) and I can't see any of them so I'm forced to go find smaller scale battles because I just simply can't fight anything except some tank that is beyond effective engagement range. I mean, sure, I can hit him if I try, but it wouldn't be logical to. But hey, look on the bright side, at least he isn't invisible and probably suffering like I am, huh????
EDIT: This is actually my biggest pet peeve of this game, so Iv done a lot of research to expose it. It's half lock on range and half player culling. Infantry from the crown airpads can lock on to tanks at TI Alloys / Magrider Hill and not render. They can hit us with lock rockets with impunity and there's nothing we can do. Infantry from either ends of each bridge can hit any tank on Magrider Hill with lock on rockets and not render. Infantry can hit tanks with lock on rockets at crossroads from TI Alloys and not render. The turrets at the crown often do not render, engineers repairing the turrets do not render so they can sit there and repair them all day if infantry on the ground allow it. Infantry on my server have basically all adapted to lock on rockets. If my tank is visible, it's locked on and taking chip damage. 90% of the time I can't even see what's hitting me, the rocket doesn't render for me to even follow the trail to find what's hitting me. Super fun times (not really)
