Obviously getting every class their certs (and weapons) is hardly realistic. Not at first anyway.
Do you think it's possible to fill just about any role with 3 or maximum 4 classes? Which ones would you pick? And why?

Of course it is possible to select a favorite (or a few favorite) classes and fill them out. For me, I got my light assault to a good level before adding to heavy assault.

Fill them? You mean unlock everything?
Why would you ever want to do that? You only need 10-20% of it...

No, I mean fill every role, having a tool for each situation.
When the enemy is crossing open field, camped inside a base and not pushing out or simply leaves their flank open I play Infiltrator and pick them off.
When I need a vehicle I'm on engineer.
When I'm going to be fighting at medium range and sniping isn't an option I get my medic.
When there is CQC, especially at peak hours I use my MAX.
Heavy Assault I only really use when I need the rocket launcher.
And finally Light Assault I use as anti-sniper or when the jet pack is useful for ninja'ing enemies.
That's just too many classes to cert, even if you only need 10-20% of their certs. I don't really have a favourite class. I'm trying to figure out a minimal amount of classes that will give me a tool to use in almost any given situation.

For the first month after launch I spent almost all my certs on my Infiltrator, but this didn't stop me switching to Engi or HA as the need arose; even with a bare minimum of spending, you can still be very useful.
Now spending on Engi, MAX and LA as well. Barely spent anything on HA and Medic up to now, but I will soon before specialising too much.
My personal view is that it is diminishing returns with certs; best to get all classes up to a minimum standard without spending too many certs on progressively more expensive upgrades.
But if I were to pick say 3 classes, I would go for Infil, Engi and MAX.
Infil for long range sniping (obviously) and for hacking (a timely hack of a vehicle terminal can sometimes really turn the course of a battle).
Engi for repairing stuff, and I do like the default NC gun. Certs have mostly gone into the repair gun and 2x Bouncing Betties, very useful for that game of cat and mouse that ensues when an AMP station is under attack.
MAX for dual burster duty, or for causing mayhem with dual Falcons.
