View Full Version : Why didn't they put an event in place on ALL servers?
Feeling pretty ****ing unapreciated over here in EU land. I have to watch the first event for the game on Twitch or make a noob toon on US server?!
Just seems like a missed opportunity considering the profile of the event.

Could've quite easily have been kept for the main event. All they had to do was a bit of creative marketing. What they've done is alienate the rest of the world, indeed the rest of the US too (although it's much more practical for US players to have a character on Connery)
I'm sure there'll be big battles across all the servers on Friday but (maybe because I bought AS and am subbing) it still feels like a kick in the teeth from SOE.

Its about logistics, they're going to have the teams all playing in the same "hall" next to each other, and doing that across different timezones and servers would have cost too much and made not the slightest bit of difference in the long run.
At least all the guys participating now will be some sort of semi e-sports style event with a crowd and cheers, etc... which tbh is fine by me, let them.
I still have no clue what this event is and have not took the time to look it up, and really have no desire to look it up. If this is some marketing stunt to get PS2 out there, I think they should have just spammed commercials it worked for WoW. They could have hired Silvester Stalone to just say something like, "When I want constant combat in massive numbers in a continuouse enviroment, I long into Planetside 2" then go to some shots of some battle scenes. This probably would have at least gotten the attention of most of the target audience that they were shooting for. Ive seen some reviews in some magazines and stuff but as far as alot of advertisement on TV and stuff ive seen none.

Honestly if you aren't at the event i can't see you really being able to do a whole lot on the server during the event itself. As mentioned, it's more of a PR/Fan Fare event to drum up more players for PlanetSide 2 rather than be an event for existing players.

Or is it aimed squarely at fans of these three Youtube celebs? and if that's the case then what do totalbiscuit's UK fans do to get involved? Like his PS2 vids? Watch twitch?

It's aimed squarely at picking up new players more than anything else. People watching and saying "Hey I'd like to play this" I think the whole "getting involved" piece isn't really their priority.
Media is going to be there - it will be streamed live likely on the front page of Twitch as well. So it's going to be a big event to get the word out there about PlanetSide 2.

There is nothing to complain about here.
It's promotional more than anything else.. besides if it was on EU servers, I wouldn't be interested.

Yea and Connery is going to be locked down I mean packed this Friday I can see their being queues to get into the server as well as transition from one cont to the other all evening.

I can imagine people padding the Connery server queue with their priority membership. You know, just to sod the randoms wanting 15 minutes of youtube fame.

Yeah not the best idea to put the event all on one server. It's gonna be lagged to hell and the queues are gonna be massive.
It's bad enough on Miller where I am with the sluggish gameplay and the lag with the occasional queues for continents I cant imagine the game coping very well under the massive loads for the event.
Unless they lock it down and just have the "celebrities" and their minions on the server and lock everyone not involved out. I'm sure that'll go down very well with the existing Connery population :P
I wonder if they are gonna hotfix in the infantry rendering patch for the event otherwise they'll be fighting ghosts with rifles :P

It's a marketing stunt. That's only good for the game.
The event "across all servers" is the increased population attracted from this event. That's good enough.
If you really wanted to participate, you should have signed up.

There are some flaws to this whole idea that it is not targeted at the current player base:
Foremost, they are presenting their 6 month plan, this is for sure targeted at us as well. Besides that, they sacked Tobuscus because of community demand for LevelCap, who's community was already known with PS2. Not exactly a good move from an attract-new-players perspective. And then you have of course these 3 community teams to help the faction leaders. Add up to the fact that they want the players to wear event decals and physically show up as well and you can savely conclude that this is more than a new-player-only affair.
Which is exactly the reason why this whole approach to the event is pissing off so many players, especially outside the US. And attracting new players at the cost of pissing off your current customer base is not exactly smart marketing, no matter how you look at it.

I'd imagine many of us here that are playing on EU servers got grandfathered in with SOE accounts. We are in a interesting market gap.
SOE targets new players in the US market.
Prosebien should target new players in the EU market.
We know this. I'm saying go ask Prosebien on their forums.
I've never bothered to signup there - because I have an SOE account. Why would I want to.

I feel ya hamma I actually did some looking up about the event, Its pretty cool, but if they need some PR help, you got some pull with smedley tell him to give me a call I got some PR Idea's that will have kids stealing there parents credit cards and playing PS2 all day and night. I got half the marines here at quantico playing now. :D
But I can see that using Youtube stars with all those followers will put the word out. Hey next time can we call Ray William Johnson (= 3)to rep the VS, he has quite a few followers.

Be realistic here...
The most "getting involved" people will be doing on Connery during this even, will be stream sniping TB, LC and Seananners. Tobuscus was probably lucky to avoid this cruel punishment. He probably would have copped it the most.
My suggestion would be to enjoy your Friday night (or saturday morning) of gaming instead of thinking about this crap... and wait for the highlights real.
Unless you have planned for a night of coordinated stream-sniping, then i urge you to record and upload some well edited vids of the event ;p

If you think this has no effect on existing players than I invite you to hook up with some Miller outfits and ask them how they feel so far in terms of SOE giving them some spotlight love. This event is just another example for them that adds to the feeling that SOE doesn't really care what goes on in Europe.
This has all been completely US centric so far: Planetside rolls with Devildogs/Azure Twilight/Black Widow, FNO is 90% US outfits, all pre-launch PR was US outfits only, this event, etc. etc.
So yeah, I can kinda understand why they are pissed. Especially when you keep in mind that Miller has probably the highest concentration of well organized, long standing, PS outfits in this game and by my experience offers the best Planetside 2 experience, even compared to Connery or Mattherson.
And no, ProSieben should not be in the lead for this. Events like these you do either global or you don't do them at all. These YouTubers have following all over the world so you address the global crowd if you're using them for an event.

SOE is based in the US as are the majority of their subscribers.. so their events take place here.
Either way seems mute now - looks like everyone can participate. Closing this since the news makes the thread useless.
