I read someone in another thread "wanting carriers" and I thought, good idea. Carriers were massive capital ships from StarCraft, that launched flights of damaging tiny ships, and pretty much just owned everything. Now, on to my point before I forget it!
Aircraft need a mobile repair point. The carrier could be a large ship with docking bays, and you were repaired in the bays. To defend it, it could also have turrets on it. The downsides would be it was slow, and anyone within a 5 mile radius would launch a phoenix at it. Give it 10 slots for a Reaver or Skeeter, and 3 slots for a Galaxy. This would be cool.

Certainly sounds cool. You could watch a battle from the skys.
But it would put more of a focus on air combat. Not that that's a bad thing.

Pretty cool idea, wish it were more original. I don't think it serves that much of a purpose though... It'll only make aircraft stronger, and in my opinion they're strong enough as it is.

Not really. They can run out of ammo. And those phoenix rockets are a bitch.
This way instead of flying back to a base (if you make it that is), you can fly over to a carrier. But like I said before, it does give aircraft a bit of an edge, but not much.

Heh... chances are, if they ever make that water vehicles explansion, there will be aircraft carriers on the water.
But the only way u can repair things away from base is...i suppose be an engineer as well :-P

Require some major cert points, like 4-5. Only 12 available on the Planet at a time, with each side getting a max of 4. Every time one goes down, takes another day before you can grab another. Only available at Sanctuaries. Also, maybe you could actually walk around in it, and fight. Fly your Galaxy into the bay, and hijack the ship. Possibilities are endless....

Why would i want to get into a big ass bullseye like that? Pop that sucker into a continent and all of the enemies will come and blow the thing out of the sky..
Secondly, introducing limits on vehicles will just promote llamaness....
Concept is nice tho, for a water exp ie floating carrier or a space expantion imo.

Carriers would be cool, but if you have any boats at all, imo, you have to have the ability to move from one island to another without using warpgates. If you have something like a carrier, you would probably, in the end, have to get rid of the warpgates all together.

Best thing to do is hust wait and see how things go about. Its an ok concept but i think it should be like this.
1) They should be more like small battle cruisers that carry their own 2 man aircraft, one pilot, one gunner.
2) It should be slow but not that large. It should fly pretty high in the air as to be able to avoid much attention. People would still be able to see it but the weather formations should cover it.
3) the biggest it should get is about 5 of those 2 man aircraft (10men), a pilot and a navigator. No need for gunners and other stuff. So a total of 12 people which is roughly galaxy type cargo. But since it carries aircraft it should be 1.5X to 2X as big as the galaxy.
those are my opinions.

ive got an idea- a GIANT ship, thats like a flying base, that you can land on and everything, it moces really slow, and has upper guns, but no lower weapons, and it flies really high, so it can only shoot at enemy ships trying to attack the top, which will be the aircraft carrier, and it has all of the ships, :)

I think that is a great idea. Needs some thinking through though...
What about this? A carrier type aircraft that can only have 1 to a outfit at one time, A large craft that holds 10 small 1 man fighter aircrafts (like the things in Independene Day) and has a landing bay in the back so fighters could deploy out the sides, then fly quicklys to a bay, get repared and get shot out their deploy slots again. I think it would have to be a high flying aircraft that mostly is for support reasons, A flying AMS if you will with some firepower (the 1 man crafts). I may be gettin carried away here :D I also had a idea (I know... thats always dangerous) that a carrier would have empire spicfic traits. Such as the TR having thier figherers use Chainguns as their weapons, the NC with missles as their weapons and the stinky Vanu with plasma bolts or somthing.
Also :D I think the Idea for a space expansion is a great idea! I was thinking Huge flying bases in close orbit of the planet and empires would attack echther to gain the bases, the bases would have diffrent uses like some would be dropship bases and some would be resourse bases and so on. Just a thought.
I think its always good to talk about thiese things on the boards (no ideas are stupid) becacuse you never if a Dev hangs out here :p

I think this ideer would shift the focus from capturing bases and ground combat, to airial combat, wich i think only was designed as support in this game... Would give it to much power if you could repair you plane rigth over the enemys base, and give u an unfair advantage...
Afterall u cant spawn tanks and such at AMS so why should u be allowed to get aircrafts???
Remember that this is an FPS not a fligthsim... go play one if you love aerial combat :P

what I was saying was a flying mobile base, kinda like the AMS, but bigger, not really more powerful, and u couldnt spawn on it, it could fly really slow, and u could get air vehicles on it , or get a buggy to drop down to the ground, it would be just for getting a mobile base to a place that u cant get to by the ground, no guns on it, just really uber shields, and a bigass aircxraft carrier top, kinda like the bigass aircraft carriers they have today, only more futureistiecal like, okbyethx! BTW I had a friend, and he ate a grenade, and they took him to the hospital , and they took the grenade out, and they gave it to goodwill, tru story, OKTHXBYE KABOOM!

I really like it. And if it did indeed put the focus on aerial battles (most likely) they could simply limited it to 1 continent which would focus on aerial battles because the ground is unstable in most spots or something like that. :)

er, i don't really like it. It might be nice if they could find a way to implement it correctly, so it doesn't just totally fucking own every other cert in the game, but i doubt that is possible.
Sea stuff might be nice, but the only way i can see that happening and being fun is if they just drop a few warpgates in the middle of the ocean, with a few tiny islands nearby with bases on them where you could buy little ships, like gunboats and landing craft, and maybe aircraft. Maybe they could have some sort of neutrally bouyant aquatic infantry that could swim a little ways under the water before they start taking damage, along with new weapons of course. Maybe subs as well. It also might neccesitate bumping the max BR up to 30 or 35 so that you can cert in the water stuff to. But there is no way they could have just huge battleships or carriers and still be balanced, its just to much damage potential in one persons hands, and if they limit it, then we start down the path of bf and tks over equipment.
as far as the space stuff, buy a different game for that, it's to different and doesn't really fit. And the huge flying bases, to much power in one players hands.

I think huge flying bases would not be overpowerd, think, they have 2 speeds, flying mode where they go fast and battle mode where they dont move and just function. Flying bases would have to be limited to water/rough terrin only though. Think Tribes 2 type flying bases (even though tribes 1 was better :D )

A flying carrier capable of holding multiple aircraft would have to be pretty big. They would be incredibly important, so they would obviously be griefers #1 targets.
If it was ever implemented i think having them AI controlled would be best. Maybe make it so the carriers fly a little ways behind the 'front lines' (line of controlled bases on a continent) and automatically moves forward/backward according to what happens to the front line, whether yours are captured or yours are extended.
It would be incredibly slow but have alot of AA defensive turrets (only thing players can control on it) and would require atleast a squad of aircraft to take it down. This way it wouldnt be a source of grief, would contribute to the fight in a supportive role and gives the flying elite somethingto target. :D
Have a certain # per empire that spread themselves out, and if ones destroyed it takes a certain # of hours for a new one to spawn back at the sanctuary. Another idea is giving all high-level commanders the option of voting where a carrier should go.

Well any Starcraft guru knows that carriers are cool. But the have thier weaknesses. In a environment such as planetside it is impractical, Because of its size and Because all of the A/C are VTOL. Quit frankly a ammo carring vehcile like the J-27's from battletech to reload without heading back to base would be fine.
