PSU Crossroads

In our short time in this community, PlanetSide Universe has completely blown away all our expectations. We recently hit 2,000 members on the forums, and 1 million hits on the site! With our site growing daily in popularity, as well as our IRC. The time has come for a decision.

Our server has been taxed recently, causing disconnect problems on IRC and some site downtime. After considering this for a week or so and having a conversation with my ISP, and staff, I have decided that we must invest in more servers for PSU to stay as it is today. The website is not in jeopardy however, IRC and AGN could be. I feel that the IRC server is one of our HUGE strong points here at PSU, I would hate to lose it as I believe it is one of the things that gives this community a home for their outfits and various chats. Also, imo AGN is going to be just as big as the website and IRC. Rather than wait till PS release and have a HUGE influx of users crashing our servers. We must bite the bullet now.

More servers mean more $$, I cannot afford to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars monthly, If I could I would not be making this post. So I am going to you, the community for donations to keep PSU IRC alive. I do not have a total goal in terms of donations, however I would like to get near 1000$ to start off. This would pay for some new servers for a few months, then we would do this all over again.

So, the survival of various things here on PSU depends on you, the users. Just as your visits and forum posting keeps this site alive your money will also. If I cannot raise enough to justify some new servers I will have to look into some possible advertising, resulting in banners and slower load times.

This is a big issue. Every penny counts, We have a community of 2,000 people. If everyone were to contribute, We could raise tons of money to have faster servers and better stability. Id like to preface this post with saying that I am giving some money atm.

This is actually my first post, ive been trolling for a week now or so since i got intersted in this game again (back in the day i played EQ and heard of it like 2 years ago). I feel that a site is not hindered by ads. Ads dont hurt the site as long as they are subtle and follow the design of a site. I think that if ads are needed to make thsi site run fast and allow the staff to provide us with up to the minute info and a place to share our ideas and concerns than a few ads are ok. Hopefully you can get a large amount from the donatations.

The answer is most likely not. The company PSU uses (www.cafepress.com) already charges the minimum price for the items. To make it so people would *want* to buy the items, PSU can't raise the cost of the items very much. Buying a sweater from the store earns Hamma about $0.05. I would suggest just donating the money if you can.

But hey, $0.05 is money.

Paypal rocks. I've been using it for probably two years now to transfer funds around (and to collect from eBay auctions) and have never had a problem with them (well, I had one guy who is now being searched for for credit card fraud, but PayPal told me that they couldn't confirm his address, so trusting him was my risk, so that's completely not their fault). It's both quick and easy. And free to use to send money, let's not forget that.

btw, I did transfer some funds to PSU that I had sitting there. It's not much, but I'm broke at the moment. :)

If you can donate - donate. Long term it may be that adverts (banners only hopefully) are necessary but lets show the PSU bods that thier hard work is appreciated in the best way possible by sending them money so they can continue to produce the best site i have seen in ages.

Our community is great, i have rarely seen a forum that is so productive and positive. The lack of lame people who do nothing but flame people reflects greatly on us, and on the PSU admin staff for the effort they put in to ensure all of this.

Give if you can, i understand that not everyone has "spare" money (if there is such a thing as spare money) but those who do I am sure will donate. I have just done so (paypal makes it so easy) and i hope others will too...

Well, I am not a man of riches, but I do believe that it is important to invest in those things that have a return on investment. That return isn't in the form of money, but rather in the form of information and community leadership. So I chipped in.

For a long time now, PSU has provided the community with the most up-to-date information possible, through community observation and its contacts at SOE. PSUs forums and IRC have allowed the community to form and take shape. IRC-conversations and debates alike have helped potential players gain interest and have acted as Ritalin for stressed-out veteran PlanetSide anticipaters. I, for one, believe that this trend of information upkeep and community presence will persist once PlanetSide goes gold, and beyond.

On a personal note, I have been working with Marsman, Hamma, and Flynt on some ideas for PlanetSide OpCenter (http://opcenter.cyberhawke.com/main.php) and PSU/AGN interaction. The first of which has gone live at OpCenter, whereby players/outfits can report on Missions/Events that they have planned and run via OpCenter. This information, while viewable to all OpCenter members, is to be potentially used by AGN for reporting purposes; thus giving outfits potential notariety, and extending the reach of the PlanetSide community.

PlanetSide OpCenter supports PlanetSide Universe. If you can give, please do; even if it is a dollar or two a month.

As for people offering hosting, I will respectfully decline all offers. I have run fansites in the past and gotten burned hard, I have nothing against anyone who offers hosting to me. I just dont want to take the risk at this point, we have too much going.

As for the website, it will never go away. Its teh IRC and AGN mainly which could be in jeporady. As it is now all our services run on one server. This is causing problems on the box. This also causes a problem when our server goes down, everything does. IRC, hosted sites, everything. Putting IRC on its own box will eliminate these issues. :(

BTW for all of you out there who depend on your parents to pay for your internet needs, ask them for 10 dollars or less. It's the cost of 1 month of an avg MMO game, but it's a one time cost. Go and look under your bed and find all those loose dollars and cents under your bed. Scrounge up 10 bucks and give it to your parents, and ask them if you can charge a 1 time 10 dollar cost to their credit card. Make sure you tell them paypal is secure, and use the example of eBay depending on paypal..

Well we broke the 1000$ mark in less than 24 hours :eek: I will be able to start the ball rolling this week for new servers :) The donations dont need to end, the money you send to PSU will pay for all future bills, not just this.

Once I get everything rolling I will post how long PSU's IRC and extra servers are paid off till :)

I think you should run some banner ads. Gamers are realistic people for the most part. We know you guys have to make some money to pay for all this. Bluesnews has had banners forever, and no one cares. With the hits you are talking about, you should be able to get some advertisers.
