ATI 9700 Pro drivers screwie?

ok... my current system is:

AMD Athalon 1GHz
512MB Ram
ATI Radion 9700 Pro 128mb Vid card
Windows XP


ok.. i DO have with Windows XP Service pack installed, and everything from my BIOS to my Sound Card is updated Driver wize.. but here is my problem.


For some odd reason, i Cannot, no way, at all, possibly use the updated Drivers for the Radion 9700 Pro... if i use anything other than the old CD Standard Drivers, i start getting anything from:

1) Lockups durring games.
2) My moniter will simply cut off (computer still runs, not locked up) as if it is not recieving any signal from the Computer, and goes into its "sleep Mode"
3) Computer will show a error message after Restarts (after #1 happens, stateing that a vidio driver failed to complete a drawing opperation.


Have any of you guys heard of this happening, or ever seen it happen? or have it happen to you?... and have any idea how to fix it? =)

um, well I can only suggest a few things.

1. make sure your monitor is on a correct refresh rate.

2. try using directX 9

3. when you install the new drivers (catalyst 3.2 right?) make sure you uninstall the old ones first.

I have the 9500 PRO (from the same family) with almost the same comp. never had any problems but thats about the only thing I can think of.

Also make sure you've updated your 4in1 drivers for your motherboard. Find out which chipset your botherboard uses (probably either VIA, SIS, or NVIDIA), and download their latests 4in1s. Many people never do this, and it can cause many problems.

hehe like i said.. everything from the MB Drivers to even the Powersupply have been updated.


Uninstall old drivers than instal useing the new ones?... never had to do that with the GForce2 i had that was usualy just run the updated drivers, restart, and it worked.

... i might try that tonight.

yea, radeon drivers require that you uninstall the old one before installing the new ones. its a minor inconvenence, but ah well... :)

or uninstall... install. then reboot?

and you mean uninstall useing add/remove programs?

1. uninstall using the add/remove programs...

2. it should make you reboot (if not do it anyways)

3. install new drivers

4. might have to reboot again.

5. uh there is no step 5...

grrr... my screen whent to sleep on me again after playing Tribes 2 for about 30 mins after idid the uninstall/re-install deal... =(

The computer did nto lock up... the screen jsut simply turned off and acted like it wasnt recieving anything from the vidio card.

Nova, you do have directx9 right?

The catalyst 3.2 require dx9.

well they dont require dx9 but its a good idea to get it.

1. what kind of monitor is it?

2. what resolution/refresh rate do you use?

3. try changing the power options of your computer (go to settings, control panel, power options. and change the monitor option to something high.

:confused: I installed 3.2 without uninstalling 3.1 and I haven't had any problems.

yes i have dx9.


i was finaly able to get rid of the controle pannel for the Card, had to physicaly go in and delete all the files, for some reason add/remove wouldnt get rid of it.

so ive reinstalled again, so we'll see how it does.
