Planetside has a NUMBER of advantages over the standard MMO model, let me break them down:
1. No PvE. This often leads to balance issues when you bring in PvP. Since there is no PvE the balancing must only hold up to PvP, and this in turn makes the Devs job that much easier.
2. No Level Treadmill. While granted there IS a lvl and cert system, this is not like say.. an unnamed three empire MMO out there where you must spen 6 months just to be effective in PvP. Thus the game's main content is not unreachable.
3. No Economy. I know there are a number of people that feel this is... a mistake by the PS staff, when you consider what would be required for an economy, this is again, a HUGE plus and further allows for balanced play and "jump right in" playability.
4. Size, size does matter, and the PS play area is just huge. It will take a player quite a while to see all that is offered, and even longer to be bored by it.
5. Player skills vice Player stats. One thing I cannot stand in MMO PvP is that a guy with the better equipment and better items wins, reguardless of the skill of the person behind the keyboard. Finally we can compete mono-a-mono on how good we REALLY are not how much of our lives we have poured into a game.
