View Full Version : do you want night back?

i'm sure i am not the only one here wanting to get beta night back into the game . we know that the engine is capable of giving us proper night ; the question is can we convince the devs (specifically higby) to give us proper night combat back to us. This would allow a use for the flash light and head lights because right now you really have to be a fool to cert into them. Secondly and more importantly it would allow for a more spec ops friendly environment for small outfits which could specialize in night special operations

Theoretically yes, I'd love to get night back.
The problem I see is how do you balance out of game alpha/brignthness/monitor settings? Depending on how dark the night is this could give you an advantage borderlining on cheating...

It was nice in theory, but TBH the tools we have for dealing with darkness are actually very limited and that leads to some potentially frustrating gameplay and very limited loadout choices.

Basically proper night will just lead to every experienced player using some form of night-vision (if they aren't already...) while newer players blunder round in the darkness getting farmed until they quit.

So... yeah... IMO this is only a good idea if we're going to see an extended range of night time options and/or some counters or downsides to night-vision sights/optics.

they could introduce a cert that replaces nano-weave/flak that makes you invisible to infra-red and night vision . and for the people changing monitor settings we can't let a couple of individuals ruin the game for the rest , let's just ignore them . (except if some one finds a better solution)

Something I've seen when this was introduced before, was the idea of changing moons. E.G.: Every so many nights, (let's say 4), the moon becomes a "New Moon." What does this mean? Darker nights on the nights there is a "new Moon" and lighter nights with a "Full Moon" and various other lighting situations on the other moon phases. Simple answer to a complex problem. New players will have the chance to cert in to "night vision" certifications to improve their night fighting skills.

so you want to (not)see it so dark that no one can see you and then nerf all nightvision devices?

are you friggin kidding me?

I'd like to have it back into the game, but a nerf on night vision wouldn't be reasonable in my opinion.

Well I for one would like to see properly dark nights, even if it were only once in a while (alignment of the nearby planets). As it is, night is just a toned down version of day; no need to use headlights whilst driving (in fact, I make a point of turning them off to avoid attracting attention to myself).

What's the downside to having dark nights? The game looks too awesome in pitch black and you won't be able to play as you stand awestruck?

Seriously though, what's the reasoning for not having it? You can't see? DUR that's the point of darkness!

I would love to have total darkness again, if it is for only fifteen minutes or so at the beginning of the evening.

I'd like to see proper dark nights again. It was challenging, but fun. I like the moon idea as well.

It would also be good if you knew when it was going to get dark. That way small squads could actually plan to attack under cover of night. Perhaps an indicator on the main map showing minutes until dusk.

id LOVE night back again, with decreased night vision range.

doesnt have to be dark on all continents. make one continent very dark for variety sake.

I think this would be the best idea. Total dark fighting for long periods is not fun tbh, but I could cope with it for short periods. Im pretty sure it could also be that randomly we got a longer, dark night to mix things up.

Overall Id prefer we got back the mobile Sandstroms, fog, rain and snow weather systems as ways of reducing visibility.

You chaps should look at the continents your fighting on though. Ive had night battles in the past few days on both Indar and Amerish. I dont think it eer gets dark on Esamir though im sure thats a lore thing.

I'd love dark nights back.

One of my most memorable beta experiences was a large night battle around Camp Connery in which both sides had armor and the tower was well defended.

Lots of colored tracers everywhere, explosions and/or on fire vehicles lighting up small areas. Was amazing.

(video is also during MBT COF "bug")
302 Found

There also seemed to be more of true dawn/transition between night and day.

Some people who think they are Batman may enjoy nights being pitch black. But its Terrible for game play. That's why its been changed, and why most games do not do it unless the game is about that ( Like Amnesia ).

Every single game that has had near pitch black games has had a drop in players. No one, on the whole, wants it. This has been shown soooooo many times. Recently with he game DayZ, Every single server is reverse time ( Day in game during night IRL ), Every server that is currently in a night cycle is EMPTY.

I'm not sure why people think the game ISN'T dark as it is ( With exception of Esamir, never gets dark there nor bright ).

I'm going with Rose colored glasses. I also think you guys are not responding to Nights, but that the glow effects from beta were reduced, likely for performance reasons. On Ultra ( Or INI Changes ), they show up again, but not as intense.

However, if more objectives were added to bases, such as dropping the lights, that would be fine.

Phantomdestiny

dayZ isn't a game . it's a mod and the only reason people complained in dayZ is because most of the dayZ players are mainstream console guys which were not used to dark nights from Arma II so they started crying after seening a bit of change. I know a lot of people love Arma for its dark night and wouldn't want to change it at all.

and no the game isn't dark enough ; right now night is just a slightly less visible and more bluish day. You play with real Arma II players and tell them that the night is bad they will kill you. Also i don't think DayZ is bad or that the console crow is bad but they are just used to too much AAA fake game which makes them biased when playing another game

That Dayz is a mod is irrelevant, your assessment of its player base is also, incorrect and irrelevant and highly biased. Conversing with you about the real world would be pointless. Its also one example.

Thankfully, the Developers at SOE have more sense.

well, seems like you failed to disprove me in any way shape or form.
Also to explain my "possibly" exaggerated point of view. the popularity of DayZ just came because some Machinima type of youtube producers which usually make console content started making DayZ content that also applies to game such as amnesia or slender. it became a bro game .

I don't agree it makes for terrible game play. Also plenty of people played DayZ during the nights, people don't now because most have quit due to the game being buggy and waiting for the standalone. I prefer realistic night to the dusk we have now. Pointing to single player games that have a decline in playerbase and correlating that to the darkness of the game is a bit of a stretch. Believe it or not almost all single player games have dramatic declines in player base because they have an ending. Other games have dark night cycles and they worked really well, IMO, just because you don't like nights doesn't mean that they make for bad game play. To say 'no one, on the whole' implies that you speak for the player base which is also a rather big stretch.

Also, as far as the night not being dark.. it's not? When your view distance isn't changed at all from night to day cycle I'd say that's a good indicator it's not dark.

MrBloodworth
2013-03-04, 10:55 AM

Yes, it was very Exciting for all 5 of them.

Pointing to single player games that have a decline in playerbase and correlating that to the darkness of the game is a bit of a stretch.

Misrepresenting someones words in an attempt to discredit and argue against a wholly created conclusion is called a straw man. I did not bring up a Single player game in an effort to show popularity. Please read again.

To say 'no one, on the whole' implies that you speak for the player base which is also a rather big stretch.

I am speaking for a majority, because that's what the facts, and reality bare. Its not an opinion.

Unless they've been fixed they should probably make flashlights actually work better were they to do this.

From memory (I can't remember the last time I used one) it lit you up as an easy target and provided very minimal illumination to what was in front of you.

if the rooms inside bases are also dark, then the flashlight can be useful.

well that's your problem not the game's because flashlight are suppose to be a side grade so everyone is not using it; if they prefer to have a foregrip or a laser sight then good for them they loose the flashlight but they can still get an NV scope. Also it will be interesting if they had ANT's and NTU's for when they get rid of the energy of base the light of the base will also drop. it would be amazing for specs ops.

Well seeing as basicly any player created light is near useless and the sights meant for very dark enviroments aren't really needed, sure.
I would love to trod around on Hossin in the swamp with fog and the darkness as my only companions... Right up until the darkness is interrupted by tracer rounds and search lights.

I can certainly understand why they changed it, not so much on their insistence on also keeping the flashlights etc. in the game.

I think it is dark enough as it is. When I played VS I didn't notice much of a problem but since I've played a lot more NC for the past few months it can be hard as hell to see VS uniforms without an IRNV scope. That was one of my first upgrades.

Having a flashlight on your weapon in my opinion just makes you a target.

I voted yes, but here's what I would like:

Twin modes on every scope, available for any soldier. Toggleable NV on whatever zoom level you have applied, be it reflex or x12 or whatever. So its ADS or pitch-black. MAX units have night visors, maybe.

Commander flares alongside smoke colours.

I think it also doesn't have to apply to every continent. Hossin for instance could be darker than the others? Yes its one planet but so what. Make up some sci-fi bollocks.
