The MLG Winter Championship is coming up this weekend in Dallas, TX. This will be the first MLG event since the Partnership was announced back in January at the Ultimate Empire Showdown. It's no secret that E-Sports is a growing trend in gaming and the numbers prove it. Forbes had a chance to sit down with MLG co-founder and CEO Sundance DiGiovanni to talk about MLG and he mentioned PlanetSide 2 as well.
I saw that you’re spotlighting Planetside this time around. What do you think it will take for a smaller title like that to be up on the big stage alongside more popular titles on a regular basis? Do you think it’s possible, given your experience with the game on a personal and professional level?
The first time I played PlanetSide 2, I was impressed with its scope and the approach that the devs took. One thing that was clear was that there was a solid foundation. The scale was too big for eSports but the underlying mechanics were solid. So, we are starting out by developing the competitive settings to make it work for eSports...

So when it comes to PS2 they are just going to test the waters this time around.

Blind link!
What?

What?
At first the link took me to a somewhat blank page with a "Continue to Website" button. I clicked it and it worked fine, though. And the link takes me there normally now.

What?
Blind Link means a URL link in a forum with Zero context as to where it goes, says or is about.
I do not click those for obvious commonsense internts safety reasons.

There's a good chance the guy running the show here won't fuck up your comp though. ;)
Otherwise agreed.

"...The scale was too big for eSports but the underlying mechanics were solid. So, we are starting out by developing the competitive settings to make it work for eSports. It will start with a presence on MLG: Play (formerly Gamebattles), with stations at our Pro Circuit events for fans to try out the competitive settings. Once we feel everything is working properly, we will determine next steps."
So it looks like they will be re-designing the game mechanics for much smaller-scale combat. I'm really excited about this. Not just to see how much different PS 2 could be in this small-scale team-based format, but also for the amount of exposure and therefore new players it could bring to the PS 2 servers.

"Smedley said that the design team began plotting how to turn the MMO into an eSport, using a separate continent, after talks began with MLG. But there isn’t a working prototype yet."

Bad idea IMO.

A game that's only real thing going for it; ie large scale warfare, being scaled down to small scale seems like a very bad move. But we shall see.

As has been discussed before they have to create a separate server with a continent specifically customized for competitive play that is based around the smaller engagements required for MLG.
While this goes against what PS2 is about, it is required for them to be able to have a chance as an eSport game.
Until I actually see it in action I will remain sceptical about PS2's proposed future in eSports.

The link goes to PlanetSide Universe like every other news thread in this forum. Are you just going out of your way to be difficult now?
Per the title
PlanetSide 2 at MLG Winter Championship
There's your context.

It was a subtle and jokingly way to ask you, again, to not post blind links or articles with no context. Your edit above was more than adequate, I do not see this as an unreasonable request. No need to get hostile.

Clicking the link to see the news story isn't that hard, we have only been doing it this way for what - 8 years? Click the link. Sometimes I will add context, but not every time. The automated comment poster posts a link and usually that's all I have time to do since the formatting from the article does not transfer to the forums.

Bloodworth, if you want it changed post it in the feedback forum (http://www.planetside-universe.com/forumdisplay.php?f=11) and we will look into it. So far you are the only person to ask in the entire time we have used this method. Don't derail news threads to request feature changes.

Likewise. I'm not sure if they are going to have any of this available at MLG, I haven't heard they will.
I've said it a thousand times, but I honestly believe PlanetSide 2 could be huge online with just an observercam and a few big name streamers broadcasting normal battles. I honestly think creating an enclosed e-Sport area is rather counter productive.

Til they start getting hacked to death and ragequit.

Hacking is still out there but I don't think it's as extreme as you are suggesting. It was much worse at the beginning, they have been roping it in.

I love eSports and watch it frequently but I still think PS2 as an eSports will fail miserably I don't think we will have enough people who want to play it much less watch, not to mention the balancing issues are astronomical compared to something like CS or starcraft 2.

Hey Hamma, Jennyboo, do you have any idea if you'll get to stream a bit of the 'MLG version' of Planetside 2 so we can see the competitive settings that they're testing out? That would be really interesting to see.
